5. EDUCATION RESEARCH Considerable effort during this year was devoted to the Education submission to the RAE. Overall, thirteen scholars were returned of whom ten academics, ten are in the research institute. Research income over the period 2001 to 2007 was £6,027,648; a total of 30.17 doctorates and 18.17 scholarships were awarded during that period. The UOA in collaboration with the UNESCO Centre mounted a popular seminar series featuring distinguished guests such as Marilyn-Cochrane Smith of Boston College, and Michael Woolcock of Harvard University. Some highlights of the year were the publication of Roger Austin’s book on E-Schooling and the continuation of the funding for his Dissolving Boundaries project; Lesley Abbott’s winning the Brian Simon Educational Research Fellowship from the British Educational Research Association, Linda Clarke’s ESRC meeting of Minds Fellowship (on Communities of Practice theory and Communal Constructivism), John Dallat’s consultancy on Teaching and Learning for the 21 st Century in Maynooth, the publication of Gerry McAleavy’s major project on Bullying, Alan McCully’s consultancy on the writing of history textbooks in the Georg Eckert Institute, Braunschweig, Una O’Connor’s evaluation of Local and Global Citizenship for the CCEA, Rosalind Pritchard’s Leverhulme Fellowship (Gender and Inequality in British and German Universities), Jackie Reilly’s work on Human Rights Education, and Alan Smith’s Visiting Professorship to the Institute of Education in Hong Kong which he continues from year to year on a consultancy basis. Roger Austin ran a conference on ICT and Bridge Building which was attended by Ministers of Education from both the north and south of Ireland; and Rosalind Pritchard ran a conference for the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE) in her capacity as Chair of BAICE. This conference on Diversity and Inclusion was mounted jointly with colleagues at Queen’s, and resulted in a guest-edited issue of the journal “Compare”. In the future, the UNESCO Centre will coordinate NI participation in the European Values Study (2008) and the International Civics and Citizenship Education Study (2009). Funding has already been secured for the establishment of an international development unit (DFID, £299k) which will support the extension of current EU research into education for reconciliation (in partnership with Save The Children and UNICEF). 23
