Beatles news - in Los Angeles (So you say
you don’t own a stereo yet and you want to
hear the Beatles in stereo - now’s your
chance ...) Lloyd Thaxton, who hosts a
popular teen dance program over KCOP-TV
(Channel 13) and DJ Gene Weed of KFWB
Radio host THE BEATLES IN STEREO.
“Listeners should set their dial for KFWB/98 with their radio on
the right of the TV set (about 6 to 9 feet apart). The TV should be tuned to KCOP
Channel 13. KFWB’s Gene Weed and KCOP’s Lloyd Thaxton will be in touch via
on-the-air telephone - each station will broadcast the other’s voices - and stereo
Beatle tunes for one hour each day 5 to 6pm - this week!”
Radio news - Station WQXR - a classical station owned by the New York Times
says it is accepting liquor advertising after 10:30pm - a first for a radio station.
The action is causing an uproar in the industry. Though not illegal, most of the
broadcasting business has given up this kind of revenue while accepting ads for
beer and light wines. The broadcasting industry’s code of good practices has
forbidden hard liquor ads since 1937.
More radio news - WNBC radio (660) in New York, begins a new “talk” format
policy with the exception of DJ Big Wilson’s morning show. WNBC will begin
slowly. Buffalo’s Bill Mazer will conduct the first talk show at 4:30pm weekdays
followed by Canadian Brad Crandall evenings and Long John Nebel overnights.
A morning talk show aimed at housewives will be added in April, as well as a
noon “celebrity” show. Says station manager George Skinner - “Radio has been
saturated with music and, except for your specialized stations, that phase is just
about done. Our talk shows will be dedicated to the listener who can bring up any
problem with the announcer.”
