Movie actor Peter Lorre (59) is found dead in is tiny
Hollywood apartment, apparently of a stroke. He
succumbed a half hour after a scheduled divorce
hearing for his estranged wife, the former Anna Marie
Stoldt.
Famed defense attorney Percy Foreman, quits as
chief counsel for Jack Ruby because of
disagreements with Ruby’s family and a Dallas civil
lawyer.
Civil rights - The senate debates, then passes a motion to take up the rights bill,
which southern resistance had stalled for 15 days. Witnessing the actions are
Malcolm X and Dr Martin Luther King, who foresees “direct action” by Negroes in
Washington and throughout the South if the expected filibuster by southern
Senators threatens Senate approval of the House-passed bill. Even if the bill
does pass, Dr, King predicts there will be a summer of demonstrations to “test” it
in “every community and every state across the South.” If it fails to pass, “Our
nation will be in for a dark night of social disruption.” Malcolm X - now leader of
the militant Black Nationalist movement says the very start of a filibuster would
produce a “spontaneous march” by “groups of Negroes who will be ready to
camp out in Washington until this thing comes to a “head” and that a new Negro
march “won’t be so orderly” as the one staged last summer. The Black
Nationalist movement is the recent product of a schism within the racist Black
Muslims, who refuse to work with other Negro groups.
A destructive earthquake hits Alaska,
triggering a 15-ft tidal wave racing toward
Hawaii. At least 100 are dead and Civil
defense officials in Anchorage report that
a 10-block area in the downtown section
was “extensively damaged.’ Many
buildings are damaged or flattened.
Caltech in Pasadena, Calif says the
quake registered an 8.6 on the Richter
sale of magnitude. Two 15-ft tidal waves
swept through the streets of Kodiak, a
fishing community of 3,500 on the island of Kodiak. The town of Valdez, a fishing
community about 150 miles east of Anchorage was also struck by a tidal wave
and damage estimates are heavy. In Hawaii, most of Waikiki Beach is evacuated
and planes flew over remote villages warning residents by loudspeaker to get to

reported missing at
Crescent City, Cal,
more than 2,000 miles
Hollywood news - Three crewmen from actor John Wayne’s yacht Wild Goose
are believed to have drowned when a 14-ft skiff in which they were returning to
the yacht, capsizes in Baja California. In the excitement of the overturn, all were
thrown into the water at 2am. A fourth man, who also went into the water
survived by clinging to the skiff. He was rescued 10 hours later. The accident
happened at 2am. Wayne, his wife, Pilar and son, John were on the yacht when
the mishap occurred.
Mia Farrow, daughter of actress Maureen O’Hara, replaces Swedish actress Britt
Eklund in the film “Guns of Batasi.” Miss Eklun, wife of actor Peter Sellers, left
the film lot in England without notice to join her husband.
Actor Peter Lorre is eulogized. Vincent Price said of the Lorre
- “Peter was a great actor ... He had no illusions about his
profession. He loved to entertain, to be a face maker. But his was

Audiences loved him for the glimpses that he gave them of that heart and mind.”
Divorced - onetime beauty queen Jackie Loughery from
actor/producer Jack Webb. She said he was later and later in
getting home from his office. At first, she added, he would tell
her he was working but later, offered no explanation. She
won the Miss U.S.A beauty title in 1953. Her first husband
was singer Guy Mitchell.
Singer Eartha Kitt wins an uncontested divorce from real estate man William O
McDonald after she testified that he was inconsiderate and accused her of
infidelity.
TV News - NASA Satellite Relay II, built by RCA, relays live television programs
over the Pacific for the first time “This is Japan Calling” - a live trans-Pacific TV
program is seen with excellent clarity over NBC-TV’s “Today Show.”
For journalistic and business reasons” -
Newsman/anchor Chet Huntley of NBC’s nightly
“Huntley/Brinkley Report” withdraws his name from a
line of high protein beef called “Chet Huntley’s Nature
Fed Beef.” The cattle came from his farm in Stockton,
N.J. Mr. Huntley said the stock would be sold on the
open market and would no longer carry his name.
Another concern of the network was the possibility
that meat packers or distributors disagreeing with his
views might be reluctant to advertise on the network.
The scheduled appearance of professional hypnotist Pat Collins on “The Jimmy
Dean” show is canceled by ABC-TV. The network says it is against policy to air a
hypnotist on the network. She’s made two appearances on the syndicated Steve
Allen show. She’s set to open a nightclub engagement in New York this week.
(Miss Collins would become known as the “hip hypnotist” in the late 70’s and
80’s).
(Channel 13) and DJ Gene Weed of KFWB
Radio host THE BEATLES IN STEREO.
“Listeners should set their dial for KFWB/98 with their radio on
the right of the TV set (about 6 to 9 feet apart). The TV should be tuned to KCOP
Channel 13. KFWB’s Gene Weed and KCOP’s Lloyd Thaxton will be in touch via
on-the-air telephone - each station will broadcast the other’s voices - and stereo
Beatle tunes for one hour each day 5 to 6pm - this week!”
Radio news - Station WQXR - a classical station owned by the New York Times
says it is accepting liquor advertising after 10:30pm - a first for a radio station.
The action is causing an uproar in the industry. Though not illegal, most of the
broadcasting business has given up this kind of revenue while accepting ads for
beer and light wines. The broadcasting industry’s code of good practices has
forbidden hard liquor ads since 1937.
More radio news - WNBC radio (660) in New York, begins a new “talk” format
policy with the exception of DJ Big Wilson’s morning show. WNBC will begin
slowly. Buffalo’s Bill Mazer will conduct the first talk show at 4:30pm weekdays
followed by Canadian Brad Crandall evenings and Long John Nebel overnights.
A morning talk show aimed at housewives will be added in April, as well as a
noon “celebrity” show. Says station manager George Skinner - “Radio has been
saturated with music and, except for your specialized stations, that phase is just
about done. Our talk shows will be dedicated to the listener who can bring up any
problem with the announcer.”
