May 9-15, 2012 E/N/C/V Let’s Go! 15 Knitters help those in need BY CHRIS KOURAPIS SUN CORRESPONDENT Elizabeth (B.J.) Simmons is a proud organizer of the Special Knitting Forces of Englewood. B.J. and 15-20 knitters meet weekly to knit items for people living in disaster-stricken areas of Appalachia. Organized 10 years ago, the Englewood group at first decided to knit warm hats, gloves and sweaters for people living in war-torn Afghanistan. However, their efforts were short lived because of obstacles beyond their control — unreliable methods of distribution. Undaunted, they searched for other worthy aid recipients and discovered Appalachian Outreach. West Virginians Rose Hart and Diane Reineke organized Appalachian Outreach in 2001 because charities did not exist or were too small to meet the needs of people living in vast areas that had been devastated by the prevalence of floods and mine disasters. Their motto is: “A little means a lot. How much do you really need What can you share with those who have serious unmet needs” Hart and Reineke established warehouses in rural areas of West Virginia. In 2011, 577 volunteers worked 5,457 hours to help 14,763 families. They hope to double that amount in 2012, according to their website: www.appalachianoutreaching.org. A complete list of items can be found on the website, but basic necessities such as furniture, house wares, appliances, bedding, clothing, non perishables, baby care items, school supplies and toys are welcomed. The Englewood knitters meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 401 S. Broadway, Englewood. Her family was grown, and she was eager to knit for someone. Now she produces sweaters and other items for children in Appalachia. Beth Sarles lived in West Virginia while attending college. She saw first hand how people struggled to survive. Today, the situation appears unchanged. Some, isolated and discouraged, give up completely. Women, children, and elderly citizens are especially vulnerable and can’t find ways to rise above the poverty level. Since joining the “Special Knitting Forces of Englewood,” Sarles said, her “knitting skills have blossomed.” Sarles helps pack the group’s knitted items in 10-12 huge, televisionsized boxes to send to Appalachia four times a year. On packing days, members go out to lunch, happy in the knowledge that someone in need will appreciate the items that have been so lovingly made for them. Special Knitting Forces organizer B.J. Simmons explained that members are free to knit whatever they like, but Hart and Reineke often request specific items such as afghans, scarves, or wool hats and mittens for individuals or groups. Once the items are delivered to Appalachia, Outreach volunteers load trucks that deliver goods to nursing homes, hospitals, or people living in rural “hollers.” Outreach recipients often aid volunteers by renting trucks, building homes, or installing plumbing fixtures. “They do want to help themselves as much as possible,” said Simmons.
