CALL FOR PAPERS<br />
NARRATIVES OF NATIONHOOD:<br />
TRANSFORMATION AND CONTESTATION<br />
IN POST-COLONIAL ZAMBIA<br />
We invite proposals <strong>for</strong> contributions to a special issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>African</strong><br />
Studies to mark <strong>the</strong> 50 th anniversary <strong>of</strong> Zambia as an independent nation-state in<br />
October 2014. <strong>The</strong> intention is to publish an issue covering a wide range <strong>of</strong> subjects a-<br />
cross all disciplinary boundaries and to feature contributions from both scholars <strong>of</strong> and<br />
participants in <strong>the</strong> post-colonial history and experience <strong>of</strong> Independent Zambia. Contributors<br />
will be expected to present <strong>the</strong>ir papers <strong>for</strong> discussion at one <strong>of</strong> two workshops<br />
to be held in Lusaka and Sheffield, UK. A selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se papers will <strong>the</strong>n be revised<br />
<strong>for</strong> inclusion in <strong>the</strong> special issue.<br />
Scope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Special Issue<br />
We hope to produce an issue that includes new insights arising out <strong>of</strong> both analytical<br />
work by academic scholars and reflective contributions by participant observers <strong>of</strong><br />
Zambia’s half century. Papers are invited that address one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas:<br />
• <strong>The</strong> role <strong>of</strong> ‘history’ and historical memory in contemporary Zambia: <strong>the</strong> emergence<br />
<strong>of</strong> a Zambian historiography; how Zambians see <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> and since Independence;<br />
<strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> UNZA in <strong>the</strong> country’s post-colonial history.<br />
• Political change: parties and movements; conflict and violence; government and<br />
unions; <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> power; constitution-building and law; sovereignty and<br />
regional and international relations; anxieties <strong>of</strong> modern nationhood<br />
• Political economy and economic development: uneven development; state and market;<br />
capital and labour; agriculture and mining; emerging trade relations; transport<br />
and infrastructure; Zambia and globalisation<br />
• Society and identity: poverty and inequality; class; gender; race and ethnicity; regionalism<br />
and nationhood; generational relations, leadership and mortality; <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong><br />
intellectuals<br />
• Civil and human rights: citizenship and rights; minorities, insiders and outsiders; refugees<br />
• Heritage, music and culture: <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> Zambian literature / art / music / <strong>the</strong>atre;<br />
preserving <strong>the</strong> past<br />
• Natural resources and environmental challenges<br />
• Civil society, media and associational life<br />
• Health: HIV/AIDS; policy and implementation; international links and sovereignty<br />
• Religion: religion and community; <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> churches in Zambian society; <strong>the</strong><br />
meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Christian nation’; religious minorities
