INNOVATIONS IN LEARNING
“It put a face to homelessness. It helped give us an awareness of
the problem while helping us to also remember that these are human
beings in an unfortunate situation.”
research Project brings attention to homelessness
When Peg Earhart assigned her Service Delivery in Human Services class a research project to help them
understand the connection between social problems and the social welfare system, she was amazed at
the project second year student Delryna Krouskoupf undertook.
Delryna, who managed to gain an introduction to homeless people living in downtown Zanesville,
shadowed three homeless men to understand how they live. After spending 13 hours with the men
gathering cans for cash in 32 degree weather, Delryna delivered a presentation—complete with “hobo
stew”—that was moving, to say the least.
Fortunately, each of the three men now have a home or room and are no longer living on the street.
Delryna—who plans to transfer to Capital University in Columbus to earn a Bachelor’s degree in social
work—continues to visit area agencies and organizations to discuss the plight of the homeless and
increase awareness.
