Grant Writing
This workshop provides knowledge to assist research postgraduates to
undertake meritorious, creative and exciting research, worthy of funding. The
grants must be developed through a rigorous, well-defined experimental plan,
by presenting information in clear language following the rules and guidelines
specified.
The objectives of the course are as follows:
• To expose postgraduates to the available grant projects.
• To offer a better understanding of the grant writing process.
• To guide postgraduates on how to write a research grant.
• To have postgraduates develop a research grant proposal that they can
submit to an agency for funding.

Thesis Writing for Beginners
This course will prepare participants for thesis writing specifically tailored to the
specific requirements and styles of thesis wiriting in USM. This course will look
at several features of thesis writing including the formats and referencing styles,
and the common weaknesses found in students writing. Special focus is given to
the APA style, while other styles are also discussed.

those who wish to deepen their knowledge about APA writing style. Students
who wish to know how to format their tables and figures, the preferred spelling
to use, the correct usage of punctuations, the writing of citations in-text and

Quantitative Data Analysis
This workshop will guide participants step by step on how to plan, prepare and
conduct their quantitative analysis using SPSS software. Participants will be
shown on how to edit and prepare questionnaire by understanding on how the
data are prepared for analysis. In addition, participants will learn on the steps in
preparing the data for analysis (Factor Analysis, Reliability, Correlations, T-test,
Chi-square, ANOVA, Logistic Regression and Simple Linear Regression). And
finally, participants will be guided on how to interpret results and prepare
recommendations.

Academic Writing: Focus on Paraphrasing
Paraphrases are one way of showing that you have not only read about the
topic but also that you have understood what you have read.This workshop is
designed to help postgraduate students to understand the major differences
between a summary and a paraphrase. The workshop content will guide the
students to produce coherent paraphrases from text. Additionally it will help
the students to understand when and how it is necessary to cite the source of
the information in a paraphrase as to avoid plagiarism when paraphrasing.

Introduction to SPSS
This session will provide skills and knowledge on one of the more commonly
used quantitative analysis software packages used in the social sciences, namely
SPSS or PASW. SPSS or PASW is a powerful statistical application package that is
particularly useful for the analysis of questionnaire data. It can be used in the
analysis of data from various disciplines and this two-session introductory level
will cover the basic analysis functions provided by the Windows version of SPSS.
By the end of this workshop you will be able to prepare, enter and managing
data into SPSS, understand how to import data from external sources(e.g.
Excel), be able to transform and recode your data, understand how SPSS uses
statistical procedures (such as Frequencies, measure of central tendency,
measure of dispersion and Cross tabulation)
