An Evening with Viola Davis
Four years ago, a Community Prep volunteer
helped me through the high school
application process. Now, after boarding
at Tabor Academy, I’ll be going to Emory
University in Georgia for my freshman year
of college. I can’t even begin to describe
how excited I am to be going to Emory,
and none of this could have been possible
without Community Prep’s help.
While at Tabor I was involved in several
extracurricular activities. I was on the varsity
track team for four years and played squash
the first two years. I participated in two
fall drama productions and worked as an
understudy for a production this past spring.
In the arts I learned that I’m particularly good
at wire sculpting. I won an award for one of
my sculptures and incorporated this medium
in my six-week senior project. Academically,
I was extremely challenged at Tabor, and
finished with four AP courses, two my junior
year and two my senior year.
I also had the opportunity to attend various
conferences while at Tabor:
– Writer’s Conference at Middlebury College
– Journalism Conferences at Columbia
University and Harvard University
– Three-day Student Diversity Leadership
Conference in Philadelphia
Additionally, I was Proctor of Bushnell dorm;
a Peer Counselor; Head Tour Guide; Global
Partner (helps new international students
And I received the following awards:
Excellence in Introduction to Studio Art,
Spanish, Advanced Art Major; Makepeace
Scholarship Award, Track Award; Fifth
place ribbon for the triple jump event in the
ISTA track championship meet; Regional
Scholastic Award (gold key) in Massachusetts
for my wire sculpture; Senior Project “High
Pass” for my wire sculptures; Major
dedication to the production of the student
newspaper; Major contribution to residential
life as a dormitory proctor; Excellence in
English Composition; Major contribution to
the Tabor art program.
Earlier this week I received a letter from
Emory saying that I was chosen of the
science majors in the freshman class to
participate in a program they call GLUE.
I will be in Atlanta for three weeks to study
and research with professors and graduate
students on various scientific inquires.
I will be one of 50 students going to Emory
next year who will get the opportunity
to do this.
The last four years of my life have truly been
memorable, and none of it would have
happened without Community Prep’s help!
