Dear Friends 

The future of Community Prep has never looked more optimistic—after 23 

years we see our most prized assets—students and alumni—having a dramatic 

impact on the community. Today our alumni are leading community organizations, 

finishing their MBA at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and dancing 

for the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Community Prep’s alumni are making an impact. 

I want all the teachers who helped me 

to see me graduate and feel satisfied 

that all the work we have done together 

has finally paid off. I want them to see 

I can handle myself, and I can reach out 

and grab my dreams. Community Prep 

is my second home. A home that makes 

me the person I am today.

SKL Communications 

As a school, we continue to get stronger—our programs, the quality of our 

faculty and the talent of our students. This year’s 31 graduates moved on to 

many wonderful high schools including: Barrington Christian Academy, Bishop 

Hendricken, Classical, LaSalle Academy, Lincoln School, Miss Hall’s, Moses 

Brown, Providence Country Day, Rocky Hill, St. Andrew’s, St. Mary Academy/ 

Bay View, St. Raphael’s, Westminster, and Wheeler. 

In addition to their academic successes, these students enjoyed working at 

the Farm School, volunteering at Bay Tower Nursing Home, and writing an 

original play about immigration. Our Class of 2007 received about $800,000 in 

financial aid for their upcoming four years of high school. All told, graduates 

of Community Prep have been given more than $14,000,000 in aid for their 

high school and college education over the last 23 years. 

Though our priority is always our students, we need to enhance the physical 

structure of our campus and develop some core areas—arts, science, and 

athletics. We will remain focused on the students and their futures as we 

address these needs. 

We hope to involve our entire school community and the local neighborhood 

in these plans during the coming year. We are looking ahead towards a bright 

future for all of the students that we will be serving in the years to come. We 

will keep you informed in the coming months of the progress that we make in 

these efforts. 

As friends of Community Prep, you contribute to our students’ many successes. 

Every dollar and every volunteer hour that has been donated to the school has 

gone to help students who are already working very hard to help themselves 

and their families. Our students set high goals, and their parents, guardians and 

teachers work with them to write and implement plans for achieving those goals. 

Thank you for all that you have done. We have much more to do, and I look 

forward to working on these challenges together.

Currently a senior at Babson 

College studying finance, 

Isaiah Davis ’00, just 

returned from studying 

abroad with “Semester at 

Sea”. Seven hundred 

students from across the 

country cruised around the 

world—Puerto Rico, Brazil, 

Bahamas, South Africa, 

Mauritius, India, Vietnam, 

China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, 

Japan and Hawaii. Isaiah’s 

best memories include 

seeing the Great Wall of 

China, Carnaval in Brazil, a 

safari in South Africa and 

going to the Taj Mahal. He is 

currently interning with 

Merrill Lynch in New London, 

Conn. Last semester he was 

an intern for World Wide 

Acquisitions, working with 

Verizon on their marketing 

campaign for FIOS.

James Reed ’01 has been 

busy studying Psychology 

and Afro-American Studies at 

Brown, and is enjoying every 

minute of it. He was recently 

appointed a Senior RA, 

supervising the RA’s in all of 

the first-year dorms and is 

working as an Executive Editor 

for Brown’s undergrad course 

review publication, the Critical 

Review. After graduation in 

May of 2009, James plans 

to go on to graduate school, 

working towards a PhD in 

Clinical Psychology. 

“I enjoyed every day that I spent 

at Community Prep. I loved 

being in an environment where 

you were allowed to learn and 

grow at your own pace and 

could speak and act freely, 

knowing that no matter what 

you believed you would be 

supported. My experience at 

Community Prep helped to 

open many doors for me, the 

most exciting of which will be 

being the first in my immediate 

family to graduate from college 

in May of 2009. The fact that 

I was accepted into an Ivy 

League institution was thanks 

to the excellent foundation 

that I built at Community Prep.

DR. HANNAH GOLDBERG 

Dr. Hannah Goldberg is all we 

could ask for in a Trustee. Her 

wisdom, insight and support 

have helped Community Prep 

grow and thrive over the years. 

Since 1996, Hannah has been 

an active participant at the 

school, serving in many roles— 

Vice Chair of the Board, Chair 

of the Education Committee, 

mentor to students and faculty 

—to name a few. We are so 

grateful to be a recipient of her 

knowledge and experience. 

Provost of Wheaton College 

for 15 years, Hannah retired in 

1998 and has been a consultant 

for higher education. She was a 

Professor and Dean of Faculty at 

Antioch University in Ohio for 

27 years. She also spent several 

years studying and teaching in 

London. Her remarkable career 

reflects the life of a remarkable 

woman.

The Founders Society was established to 

honor individuals who have included 

Community Preparatory School in their

Max Kohlenberg became a trustee of 

Community Prep in 2001, but he knew 

about the school long before that and 

was curious to learn more. Growing up 

in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Max was 

familiar with independent schools, and 

has always been interested in innovative 

educational programs. He remains 

involved with the schools he attended, 

and knows the importance of giving back. 

As a Partner at Edwards Angel Palmer 

& Dodge, LLP specializing in estate 

and land conservation planning, it was 

not a hard decision for Max to include 

Community Prep in his own estate plans. 

“Of the many charities that I give to, 

Community Prep continues to stand out 

—every year I can see and hear the results 

in the accomplishments and voices of 

the students. I want to make sure that 

Community Prep is fiscally strong 

throughout my lifetime and then some.

In the past year, there were two “Meet Community Prep” 

receptions. The first was held at the University Club and 

hosted by a committee made up of Trustees, parents and 

alumni. Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge graciously 

sponsored this reception. Everyone enjoyed delicious food 

made by Chef Gary Comella who is also a Community 

Prep Parent! Thanks to Stephanie Ogidan Preston for her 

words of wisdom regarding her CP experience. Student 

projects and artwork were displayed for attendees to learn 

about our curriculum and culture of learning. 

Charley and Sarah Denby hosted our first “East Bay” 

reception on June 27 in their Barrington home. Attendees 

enjoyed scrumptious food while watching a Calculator 

Club in action! Alumnus Julian Dash shared his CP 

experience with the crowd and answered questions about 

the school. 

All who attend these receptions are invited to visit

Julian Dash ‘92 is a member 

of Community Prep’s Board 

of Trustees. He attended Hope 

High School, earned his B.S. 

in International Finance from 

Morgan State University and 

his MBA from Babson College. 

Julian is a local developer 

working on solar-powered 

affordable housing and serves 

as the Director of Real Estate 

for PUENTE, a non-profit real 

estate and economic development 

firm. Julian is President 

of the R.I. Black Political 

Action Committee and sits 

on several other boards in the

Hannah White ’99 recently 

graduated from McGill University 

and is busy settling in 

Houston, Texas, where she will 

be a Campus Service Corps 

Fellow for Houston Hillel. She 

has spent time in a Buddhist 

Monastery in Taiwan, studied 

Hebrew in Jerusalem, and backpacked 

across western Canada. 

Her academic work has been 

published in the Jewish Studies
