Lonergan Studies Diploma Program
Purpose
The Lonergan Studies Program offers students an opportunity to gain a greater familiarity with the work of
Bernard J. F. Lonergan, S.J., and the current developments of his thought. The Diploma in Lonergan
Studies can be pursued at either a Basic Degree (Special Student, M.T.S., M.A. in M.S., M.Div., or S.T.M.)
or Advanced Degree (M.A., Th.M., S.T.L., or Ph.D./Th.D.) level.
Requirements for Application for Basic Degree Students:
1. Applicants must be graduates of an accredited college or university, or give evidence that
they have completed an educational program equivalent to a B.A. degree.
2. Normally applicants should have at least a B average in their first degree.
3. Official transcripts are necessary from all post-secondary institutions attended. To be
official, these transcripts must be sent directly to the College from the institution concerned
or requested in a signed, sealed envelope from the institution for inclusion with the other
registration material.
4. Two referee evaluation forms (available in the application package) must be submitted, at
least one of which must be an academic reference attesting to one’s ability to undertake
graduate theological education. The other may attest to a student’s pastoral competence for
study.
5. Applicants must submit a letter of intent with a proposed focus for their studies.
6. A $25.00 non-refundable application fee should be sent with the application.
7. Requirements regarding English fluency noted in the admission requirements for Conjoint
Degree Programs also apply here.
It is possible to take this program in conjunction with one of the conjoint Basic Degree programs. Students
already accepted into a Conjoint Basic Degree Program need only complete an application form and submit
it, with a letter of intent, to the Director of the Lonergan Studies Program; the application will then be
reviewed by the Diploma Committee. This program is also available to students currently enrolled in a
Basic Degree program at another T.S.T. college, provided they apply for and are accepted into the
program, and register for and take at least one of the courses as a Regis College student.
Requirements for Admission for Advanced Degree Students:
To apply to the Lonergan Studies Program, students should have already been admitted to an
Advanced Degree program of studies through the Toronto School of Theology; the Director of
Advanced Degree Studies at Regis can provide the necessary information regarding the application
process. Students should then discuss their program of studies with the Program Director as well as
the Degree Supervisor/Supervisory Committee to ensure compliance with all degree and program
requirements.
Students wishing to pursue the LSP Diploma as a discreet entity will have to seek admission to the
Toronto School of Theology as a Special Student, in compliance with all the requirements of the
Advanced Degree Handbook of T.S.T.
Program Requirements:
The Diploma Program in Lonergan Studies requires ten half courses, as well as a concluding
exercise to demonstrate sufficient familiarity with the work of Bernard Lonergan. Students must
discuss the program of studies with the Director of the Program. No course will be accepted for
credit toward the Diploma which has not been previously approved by the Director of the Program.
Any request for transfer credit would require the approval of the Director of the Program as well as
of the Diploma Committee of Regis College.
