Julie Dailey Receives
Outstanding Faculty Award
Those attending the 2011 Spring
Commencement of Central Virginia
Community College saw a truly
innovative professor receive the
Outstanding Faculty Award - Julie
Dailey, Professor of Accounting.
Having earned two Masters of Science
degrees, one from the College of William
and Mary, the other from Old Dominion
Dr. Mickles Featured
at 6th Annual Women
of Worth Luncheon
Dr. Muriel Mickles, Associate
Professor and Dean of
Humanities and Social Science
at CVCC was one of four
dynamic female leaders who
participated on the “Mission
Possible” panel at the 6th
Annual Women of Worth (WOW)
luncheon sponsored by the
Lynchburg Regional Chamber
and Centra Foundation. The
WOW luncheon is held each year
to recognize professional women from
all across the region, honor the nominees
of the prestigious ATHENA Award and
announce the recipient of the Award.
The theme for this year’s Women of
Worth luncheon was Mission Possible:
Living a healthy, balanced and successful
life! Dr. Mickles and the other panel
participants, Sarah Burnett (president
University, Julie
joined the CVCC
faculty in 1991.
From the outset
Julie has put her
skills to work for
the college by
keeping up with
new technology,
much of which
has been
incorporated into
both traditional
and web-based
classes.
Reviewing
the software
associated
with this technology is in many ways
like reading a foreign language. Jing,
Wimba, Camtasia, Audacity, Screencast,
and Instant Messaging—these are just
a few of the software packages that
Julie has used to increase interactivity
in newly developed web courses. Along
with these programs, she embraces
technology by providing a blog for her
students that keeps them abreast of
of MontVue Capital Management),
Sampada Desai (licensed professional
counselor and yoga instructor), and the
Honorable Dale Harris (retired judge
from Virginia’s 24th District Juvenile and
Domestic Court), Christine Kennedy,
(moderator, LRCC), shared inspirational
stories and provided valuable advice
designed to motivate others to lead life
with purpose, passion and persistence.
the latest news and issues in her field.
It also keeps them informed about the
current and potential job market.
Instrumental in the development of
courses for her division’s Accounting
Degree Program, Julie obtained
designation as a Certified Instructional
Designer, and she was selected to
comment on her discipline for the AICPA
Top Technology Initiative for 2011.
In addition to her time spent
instructing, Julie conducted a complete
program review for the Accounting
Program at CVCC. She has also served
the College by being on a vast array
of committees and has served the
community in numerous ways, the
most unique of which is to help
students with their tax returns!
Julie Dailey is a professional who
communicates well with faculty,
staff, and students, and she has
enormous enthusiasm, great integrity,
and the highest level of ability. It
is no wonder why Julie Dailey was
chosen by her students and her
peers as the 2011 CVCC Outstanding
Faculty. Congratulations, Julie!
The four seasoned
panelists candidly
discussed their individual
life’s journey and shared
factors that contributed
to their personal and
professional success.
The audience came
away with “how to”
information and strategies
on topics such as:
• Overcoming challenges
• Successfully juggling
work, family &
civic priorities
• “Getting unstuck”
• Developing habits that lead to spiritual,
emotional and physical health
Dr. Mickles was very honored to
be chosen to participate on the
WOW panel and truly enjoyed
the opportunity to network with
over 200 professional women!
Team Wins
Recognition
A loosely-knit team
of creative spirits
at CVCC, which is
largely responsible for
producing the CVCC
Alumni Magazine, was
recognized this past fall
for their excellence. The
Virginia Government
Communicators
Association chose
to award their
“Excellence in
Communications 2010 Award,” a first
place in their newsletter category.
Editor Kathy Cudlin (CVCC ’95), a
Duke University graduate in English;
Graphic Designer, Donna Hobbs,
University of Virginia (MFA); and
photographer Jill Markwood (CVCC
’84) and Lynchburg College 2011 swept
the Commonwealth’s institutions.
Don Sutton, Vice President of
Institutional Advancement,
said of the recognition, “We
have entered past CVCC
CVCC Study Abroad
in Italy
In May, seventeen students,
faculty, and alumni from
Central Virginia Community
College departed on a sixteenday
trip to study the history, art, and
culture of Italy from Roman times through
the Renaissance. Led by history professor
David McGee, the group visited Rome,
Assisi, Padua, Venice, Verona, Florence, Pisa,
and Sienna.
The highlights in Rome included seeing
the Roman Forum (the seat of the most
competition, but could never find
a category that fit a community
college alumni publication. As an
odd duck, our magazine could not
find a roost. Mrs. Cudlin threw up
her hands last year and entered the
state competition as a newsletter.”
When the team learned that the CVCC
Alumni Magazine had found its niche,
they were vindicated for several years of
hard work,
outside of
the pride
taken in
developing
Basilica of St. Francis with its magnificent
frescoes and the tomb of Francis. While
in picturesque Venice, the participants
saw St. Mark’s square along with the
Basilica of St. Mark and the Doge’s Palace,
CVCC Students Visit NYC
Each year, during spring break, Student
Activities Coordinator Linda Adams
leads a group of CVCC students on an
exciting learning adventure in New
York City. This year the group stayed
at the Edison Hotel near Times Square
and visited the city’s major highlights
from Rockefeller Center to St. Patrick’s
Cathedral, Ground Zero to Wall Street,
Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge,
Liberty and Ellis Island to Grand Central
Station. One of the evenings the group
took a Dinner Cruise tour of the New
York harbor with its inspiring view of the
Statue of Liberty, beautifully illuminated
at night. For more information for the
markets, and several of the outer islands
in the city’s lagoon. Florence provided
the members of the group a chance to
step into the world of Renaissance art as
they visited the famed Uffizi gallery and a
number of cathedrals filled with the works
of Donatello, Michelangelo, Titian, and
numerous other painters and sculptors. A
number of the participants travelled to
Pisa where they climbed to the top of the
Leaning Tower and discovered just how
much it really leans. In addition to all the
artistic and historical sites, the members
of the group also found time to enjoy the
culture of modern Italy with its fine cuisine
and memorable people. On June 5th,
the group returned to the United States,
exhausted but filled with the wonders of a
fascinating world that stretched from Rome
to modern times.
