is to help young people, especially those who need us most, build strong
character and realize their full potential as responsible citizens and leaders.
Dear Friends:
GREAT FUTURES START HERE
That’s the message
in Boys & Girls
Clubs of America’s
public service
announcement
featuring
Denzel Washington,
Jennifer Lopez, Martin Sheen, Shaquille O’Neal, and others
(you can view the short video by clicking on the link on our
web site home page). These celebrities are alumni from Boys
& Girls Clubs all over the country who have indisputably done
great things with their lives, and credit their success to their
Club experiences. They were once young people who needed
adult guidance, a safe place to play, encouragement to
meet their potential, hope and opportunity. No matter where
they lived, they found those things and more at their local
Boys & Girls Club.
Of the more than 14,000 children and teens who benefit each
year from our Clubs and programs across Boston and in
Chelsea, not many will go on to have a Hollywood career to
rival Denzel’s, or a basketball career like Shaq had. Let’s be
honest, not many people do, regardless of their background.
But each year Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston alumni fulfill
their potential as effective citizens. They lead lives that are
extraordinary in their own ways, excelling in their chosen
fields as teachers, firefighters, business owners, non-profit
managers, nurses, social workers and military officers. Today
they are living out their great futures as role models, making
their communities better places. They are part of the solution
to break the cycle of violence and poverty that has plagued
inner-city neighborhoods.
There’s Katie from South Boston, who is now an assistant
high school principal; Candace from Roxbury, who is a
district representative for a local congressman; Nicole from
Charlestown, who is a social media analyst for federal
student aid at the U.S. Department of Education; and
Vedran from Chelsea who is working in global tax services.
And each year more people from a variety of backgrounds
make the commitment to help Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston
fulfill its mission. You are one of them. Whether you joined
one of our Local Advisory Boards, Board of Overseers or
Board of Directors, or provided sponsorship for our programs
and events, you are helping to ensure the strength and the
sustainability of our organization. Our kids’ great future is
possible in large part because of you.
Now in our 119th year of serving young people in Greater
Boston, we are so proud to partner with you to keep our
10 Clubs, YouthConnect and Camp Harbor View effective,
affordable and accessible to those who need us most. We
couldn’t do what we do without your generous support.
In this Annual Report you can read about Club alumni and
supporters who bring this theme to life. We hope their stories
will inspire you. On behalf of all of the young people we serve
who dream of a great future, thank you.
With gratitude,
Be
“I learned that your future really can start in a single moment, because that
day, thanks to the Club, I learned the difference between right and wrong.”
“I thought I had it all figured
out, but in fact I was very
confused, easily persuaded by
peer pressure,” says Ramon
Morales. Ramon’s mother was
a single parent who worked two
full-time jobs, so he often didn’t have anyone available to
give him positive guidance.
Ramon now realizes that a single moment can change
one’s life. It was the summer of 1997 and Ramon decided
to go to Burger King with some friends to take advantage
of a free french fries offer. Josh Kraft, then Executive
Director of the Jordan Club, overheard their conversation
and offered them a ride.
Ramon remembers, “Josh was nearby as I received my
free fries. Next, I went over to the soda fountain and began
filling an empty soda bottle I had brought for this purpose.
All of a sudden, I heard a stern voice ask, ‘Hey, did you
pay for that’ I turned around slowly, completely stunned.
In front of my friends and the entire restaurant, I replied,
‘No.’ Josh responded, ‘Then it is considered stealing. Get
back in line and pay for it.’”
Ramon remembers having to make a quick decision
whether to respond with attitude or get back in line.
Since Josh had never been anything but respectful
to him, Ramon chose to get back in line. He also
remembers feeling totally embarrassed.
If you ask Ramon the point of the story, he’ll tell you
never to go to Burger King with Josh! But then he’ll get
serious and say that it was tough to swallow his pride,
especially in front of his friends, and that he wonders what
would have happened if no one had been there to set him
straight. “I learned that your future really can start in a
single moment, because that day, thanks to the Club, I
learned the difference between right and wrong.”
Ramon Morales, age 28, graduated from Wentworth Institute
of Technology and received his M.B.A. in International Business
from Suffolk University. He works as a Department Manager
at Flowserve Corp., which has over 15,000 employees in more
than 50 countries.
Lindsey Elder long awaited her
6th birthday. This was the day she
was eligible to become a member
at the South Boston Boys &
Girls Club. “I lived right around
the corner from the Club and it
was such a tease to see all the kids having so much fun.”
Lindsey’s mom worked nights, so once Lindsey turned 6,
she went to the Club most days after school and spent the
majority of her time in the Discovery (art) Room and the
pool, where she was a member of the Swim Team.
At school, Lindsey was often teased about her weight.
It was at the Club that she felt most comfortable. “I was
made fun of at school when I was in my clothes, but
here (at the Club) I was in a bathing suit and I’m just
one of the team; nobody made an issue out of it. You
know, you think that would be the total opposite of
when you’d feel most self-conscious. But I really felt
like a stronger person here.”
Along with confidence, Lindsey developed many
friendships and benefited from adult mentors
at the Club.
The days of swim team practice at the Club have long
passed for Lindsey, who is a Captain in the Army and
currently leading the ROTC program at Stonehill College.
Lindsey continues to visit the South Boston Club, always
stopping in to see Anne Gordon, who still runs the
Discovery Room. She is a member of the South Boston
Club Alumni Council, a group of former Club kids whose
focus is to reach out to fellow alumni and re-engage
them with the Club.
Lindsey Elder, age 30, received her B.A. in Journalism from the
University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was deployed to Iraq
for one year and also has been stationed in Germany, Texas and
Hawaii. Lindsey currently runs the Army ROTC program at
Stonehill College, training sophomore cadets.
Melisa Canuto was raised in
Roxbury. She says, “Some kids
grow up in a bubble, believing
everything is perfect and they’ll
always be safe, but I never had
that.” She was lucky to have
positive adult role models to guide and support her, but
Melisa grew up seeing violence and substance abuse
destroying families and taking over her community. She
felt safest, she says, when she was at the Roxbury Boys
& Girls Club (now called the Yawkey Club of Roxbury).
“I knew I wanted to work with kids from my community,
to build trust and to help them and their families have a
better life,” she says. Melisa excelled in high school, went
to Lesley University and then to Boston College, where
she earned a Master’s in Social Work.
She completed internships in public schools, health
clinics, and community centers. For an undergraduate
independent project that required her to create a new
social work program, she took her inspiration from her
favorite TV show, Law & Order.
“I saw an opportunity for social workers to partner with
police officers to support victims of crime. I couldn’t
believe it when my research led me to YouthConnect
and that it was based in Boston.”
Melisa says she has been described as “a woman on a
mission” for her focus on working for YouthConnect.
Today she manages 30 active cases a month and takes
great satisfaction in her work. As a Cape Verdean speaker,
she knows she is filling an essential community need.
“I hear about families that were in crisis but could not
overcome the language barrier to get the help they needed.
“Many of our clients believe that by 18 they will be dead
or incarcerated; they don’t believe they have a future
beyond that. Many of them feel they have been let down
by the system. So it’s about creating hope in a hopeless
situation; about constantly helping them reach short-term
goals so they don’t get overwhelmed. I’ve learned that great
futures start in that moment.”
Melisa Canuto has been a YouthConnect social worker for three
years. She works at District C11 of the Boston Police Department,
serving the Dorchester community.
Ensuring
Inspiring a Community to Give
The two sought advice from Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston
Board Member Emily Brown, who launched a successful
partnership between her community of Cohasset and the
Yawkey Club of Roxbury that generates annual funding for
summer camp sponsorships. “That was the model for us,”
Mary Ann says.
Mary Ann Mattoon and Kathleen Katterhagen only
knew each other in passing until Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston Board member Donna Hazard suggested they get
involved with the organization. Today they are at the center
of a group of Weston residents who are working to make a
difference in the lives of Dorchester youth.
“It’s hard for me to imagine being a child growing up in
Dorchester,” Kathleen says, “but if I was, and if I had a
person like Scott McLellan in my life, I know it would
make a huge difference.”
Kathleen is referring to the Executive Director of the Blue
Hill Club and the neighborhood where the Club is located.
Although Dorchester is just 12 miles from the upscale
suburb of Weston, it can seem a world away to a child.
“Being a parent myself has made me feel passionate
about this,” Kathleen says. “I feel such a tenderness
for these kids.”
Both women were drawn to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston
because of its combination of critical mission, broad
impact, and professional management. But they needed
to identify how they could contribute.
Mary Ann recalls their concerns about raising money
since neither had fundraising experience. Instead, she
says, “What we found is that volunteering with BGCB is
accessible regardless of your lifestyle and experience.
The organization provides so much support.”
They asked their friends to join the effort, and a
Weston committee was soon formed. Each member
was responsible for inviting others to a breakfast at a
private home. “Our ask was $75 and the money went
directly to the Club to provide a summer camp experience
for a child who otherwise wouldn’t have one. It is such a
simple idea, and there is so much return,” Mary Ann says.
“Children emptied their piggy banks to join the effort,
saying they thought all kids should have the opportunity
to go to camp,” Kathleen adds. One of the women who
attended the breakfast was inspired to raise additional
funds by organizing a mini-marathon. In its first year, the
Weston initiative has raised $15,000 and provided 200
weeks of summer camp for Dorchester youth.
“We’re doing more than raising money. We’re educating
future generations. It’s so rewarding to be part of
something bigger,” Kathleen says.
The two agree that they generate more ideas working as a
team, and enjoy partnering with someone who shares the
same values.
What they have learned, says Kathleen, is that “the
Club is a place to play and a place to do homework,
but more than that, it’s a bridge to something better...
a great future.”
Diversity Ensures Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Great Future
Helen Chin Schlichte believes
that serving on the Governance
Committee is one of the most
important roles a board member
can have at any organization
because it’s where the future
leadership is identified and
cultivated. Helen has served on this committee at Boys &
Girls Clubs of Boston since she joined the Board in 1996,
around the time that Myra Kraft was named Chair. “Myra
was driven to diversify the board, to include women and to
better reflect the communities BGCB serves,” Helen says.
“It has been a very rewarding initiative that has attracted
smart, committed individuals who help strengthen the
organization in every way.”
Helen grew up in Charlestown and was familiar with
the Club, even if she wasn’t able to join when it only
served boys. “Like me,” she says, “many of BGCB’s
Board Members are drawn to serve because they
identify with today’s members, having come from
similar roots, regardless of how their circumstances
may have improved.”
Since the passing of her husband, George, Helen has
dedicated herself to fulfilling his generous philanthropic
commitments, and to “ensuring that I can leave
money to the organizations at which I’ve been privileged
to serve.” Helen became a planned giving donor at
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston because she wants kids
to have opportunity, both now and in the future. “I hear
inspiring alumni stories at events and know there are
thousands more,” she explains. “I want to be sure we can
continue this success.”
One story that inspires Helen is the story of Hansong,
whom she calls “the grandchild I never had.” Hansong
moved to Charlestown from China at age 4, and
Helen introduced him to the Club two years later. There
Hansong learned to socialize with children from a broader
community. Helen recalls how much he benefited from the
Club’s summer camp and later from the high quality afterschool
programs. He learned to be proud of who he is,
and gained confidence. Helen remembers that someone
once called him “China Boy.” “No,” he responded, “My
name in Hansong.”
Today Hansong is a college sophomore, taking liberal arts
and pre-med courses. “He has a great future,” Helen says
with deep affection and pride.
Helen Chin Schlichte is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston’s Board of Directors. She is President Emeritus of the
South Cove Manor Nursing Home and serves on the Board
of Directors of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the
Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
Creating Effective Leaders
Community Involvement
“Leadership is one of the most
important skills we can provide
to kids, especially during these
tough times,” says Brian Powers,
who has spent his professional
life helping people enhance
their leadership capabilities. As
an independent consultant, and previously as the Senior
Director of EMC University, Brian works with individuals
and organizations to enable them to reach their full
potential, comparable to what Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston does for young people.
In Brian’s experience, many people who become managers
don’t get proper training to become effective leaders. This
is especially true in non-profits where resources can be
limited. That’s why, for a long time, Brian had wanted to
apply his professional skills for the benefit of a non-profit
organization. It was just a question of finding the right
opportunity.
Three years ago, Brian found that opportunity when he
was introduced to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. In that
time, he has gotten to know staff at all levels who are
impassioned about delivering their best work to make
a positive difference in kids’ lives. He has witnessed
their long hours, deep commitment, and passion for the
mission, which has inspired him to keep giving back.
“I grew up in Dorchester, but I never had the opportunity
to go to a Club,” Brian says. “I see the difference it makes
for kids today, when the need is so great. Hopefully, I’m
making a difference by helping leaders of the organization
create an environment where the future really is born.”
Brian has provided a variety of professional development
experiences for Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s leadership
team, and hopes his contributions are enabling staff to be
better leaders and managers, so that they, in turn, can help
children and teens live up to their full potential.
Brian says, “Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston creates such a
positive, almost spiritual atmosphere that you can’t help
but be drawn in and want to do more. It just lifts you up.”
Brian Powers is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s
Board of Overseers.
“I am a firm believer that
people can contribute to an
organization in many ways,”
says Peter Creighton, “not
just financially.” Indeed Peter
epitomizes this philosophy –
contributing time, energy, and
ideas to local causes. Since becoming involved with Boys &
Girls Clubs of Boston, Peter has played a key role in a variety
of activities. Whether it’s organizing and chaperoning an
outing for Yawkey Club of Roxbury members to local dance
performances or pitching in at a pre-season cleanup of
Camp Harbor View, Peter delights in active membership.
In addition, he worked with contemporaries to establish
the Friends Council, allowing for a younger generation to
find new ways to get involved. Now a member of the Board
of Overseers, he hopes to do more, and seeks specifically
to synthesize the resources of the many organizations with
which he is involved. “The Clubs offer kids so many great
programs and opportunities, but there is more to see and
do. Kids can get out more. There are more connections that
can be made.”
During the summer months, Peter takes a break from
leading a real estate development firm and relocates to
Thompson Island, where he is the director of a Summer
Learning Partnership; part of a national initiative to stem
summer learning loss.
Peter hopes to continue to share his appreciation of the
arts and environment with the group of urban youth BGCB
serves by leveraging his involvement as a board member
with the Appalachian Mountain Club, Boston Natural
Areas Network, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “I’m
fortunate to be involved with several non-profits in and
around Boston,” he says. “I would like to be able to harness
those connections to extend access to Boston youth so that
they can continue to explore the arts and the environment.”
Regardless of the opportunity, if Peter is involved, he
will look for ways to do more, serve more, inspire more.
Because Peter truly believes that great futures for kids
start with an adult who cares.
Peter Creighton is the Principal of Land Resources Associates
A Safe Place to Play
Holiday Flowers Help Kids
BGCB Gets in the Game
A KaBOOM playground was
built as part of the Yawkey Club of
Roxbury’s Centennial Celebration,
which concluded in December
2010. Completed in just one day,
the new playground — designed by
kids, built by volunteers — is a safe
playspace enclosed within a fenced
area on Club grounds. More than
200 volunteers participated, with
residents of the Roxbury community
joining with employees from JetBlue
Airways, Suffolk Construction, and
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.
The playground is serving
approximately 250 local children
who previously did not have access
to a playground. The playground
is part of KaBOOM’s initiative to
provide a great place to play within
walking distance of every child in
America.
Winston Flowers’ philanthropic
initiative, Charity in Bloom, provides
a new revenue stream to a dozen
effective local non-profits. Boys &
Girls Clubs of Boston was honored
to be selected as the program
partner for December, one of
Winston’s highest grossing months.
For the entire month, anyone giving
a gift from Winston Flowers’ Charity
in Bloom collection was able to
make someone’s holiday brighter
while making a difference in the life
of a child.
Winston Flowers donated 20% of
the proceeds from the sale of the
special floral designs, and in its first
year, Charity of Bloom raised over
$30,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston. Based on the program’s
success, Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston was the December partner
again in 2011.
In June,
Boston Celtics
Shamrock
Foundation
welcomed Boys
& Girls Clubs
of Boston as a Focus Partner for the
2011-2012 season. The partnership
provides funding, resource and
branding support to select nonprofit
organizations whose mission
is to serve youth. As one of just six
Focus Partners, Boys & Girls Clubs
of Boston will receive many benefits,
including tickets, Celtics personnel
and trophy appearances, and signed
Celtics memorabilia, as well as a
$50,000 cash donation. Additionally,
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston will
receive publicity through the Celtics’
web site, newsletters, social media
and game-time announcements.
Food and Flowers Grow
in Roxbury
More than 120 local Comcast
employees and their families and
friends spent a Saturday in April
improving the grounds at the Yawkey
Club of Roxbury as part of the 10th
annual Comcast Cares Day. Comcast
employee volunteers weeded,
planted flower beds, and dedicated a
new “Good Food Garden” designed
to provide hands-on gardening
experience while inspiring healthy
eating habits. The Good Food
Garden program is a joint effort of
Scripps Networks Interactive / Food
Network, Share Our Strength, and
Teich Garden Systems.
On behalf of the employees and
family members who volunteered,
the Comcast Foundation donated
$25,000 to help Boys & Girls
Clubs of Boston continue to fulfill
its mission throughout the year.
Comcast Cares Day is one way that
Comcast helps to power dreams
and demonstrate a year-round
commitment to making a difference
in the neighborhoods it serves.
From Garden to Table
Members of the Blue Hill Club
learned to love their vegetables by
growing their own fresh produce
this year. They planted a spring
garden, including tomatoes, basil
and peppers, then planted carrots,
spinach and garlic, and watched with
excitement as their crops flourished
through the end of the summer.
They sampled healthy new recipes
using the fruits of their labor from
potato pancakes to fresh tomato
salsa and garlic tea, and many
members tried certain vegetables for
the first time. The garden project will
resume next spring and continue to
encourage Club members to make
healthy food choices.
The Blue Hill garden project is
funded by the Harvard Pilgrim
Health Care Foundation as part of
its Growing Up Healthy initiative, in
collaboration with the Food Project.
Golf, More Than a Game
McGladrey’s Charlestown office
held its first charity golf event in
June, raising $150,000 for Boston
charities, including $50,000 for
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. More
than 150 golfers and other guests
participated in the McGladrey
Foundation Charity Golf Event.
Activities included a golf clinic led
by LPGA and PGA TOUR players
Natalie Gulbis and Chris DiMarco.
McGladrey’s support provides
unrestricted funds to Boys &
Girls Clubs of Boston for the
implementation of our six core
program initiatives across all Clubs.
The McGladrey Foundation gives
employees a unique opportunity
to work as a team, to share
their time and to support the
communities in which they live and
work. Primarily funded by employee
contributions, the Foundation
engages in fundraising initiatives
and employee-run events.
Myra H. Kraft, her impact was immeasurable
By Sandy Edgerley
Myra was an amazing woman,
beloved by so many; a true
heroine who made a deep and
lasting impact on countless
individuals and on whole
communities. I was so fortunate
to have had the chance to work closely with Myra in several
organizations, to see her in action and to witness the
remarkable impact she had. It seems almost impossible
to capture in words all of what this incredible woman did,
who she was, and what she meant to us.
Myra was smart, strategic; she had incredible judgment
about people and a grasp of the full range of issues. She
was tenacious, and she had a huge heart. During her
tenure as BGCB’s Board Chair, she truly transformed
the organization. She brought in extraordinary staff
leadership, cultivated board members and donors,
identified how the needs of local youth had changed, and
pioneered the staffing of social workers in the Clubs. She
oversaw the building of new Clubs and the fundraising
required to open them, the partnership of the organization
with the Boston Police Department, and a doubling of the
number of youth BGCB served annually. As BGCB’s first
female Board Chair, she inspired so many other women,
myself included, to get involved and make a difference.
Myra loved the Club kids, and she knew so many of them
by name. She made time to talk with them and get to
know them over the years, and she always related to them
at their level. The Kraft Teen Recognition Awards and the
Giving Back Scholarships, given by Myra’s four sons in her
honor, recognize youth who give something back to the
community, who do it because it is the right thing to do.
That so embodies the spirit of Myra – she gave back to
the community in so many ways, not for any kind of
personal recognition or credit, but because it was the
right thing to do.
The truth is, Myra’s impact was immeasurable because
she not only took action that improved others’ lives, but
she also inspired so many others to get involved, to give,
to give back – the multiplier effect is incalculable.
Myra was truly one of a kind, and her passing has left an
enormous void and a hole in our hearts. But we will do
our best to carry on the work she cared about so deeply.
I know she would have wanted us to.
Sandy Edgerley is BGCB’s Immediate Past Chair of the
Board of Directors.

William “Bill” O. Taylor,
determined to help those
in need
By Tim Leland
It’s a good thing Bill Taylor wasn’t
present at his memorial service
in Harvard Yard last May. He would have been horrified by
the huge turnout of family, friends and admirers who came
to pay their respects, and thoroughly embarrassed by all
the nice things that were said about him. “What’s all the
fuss about” he would have asked. As the publisher of The
Boston Globe and chairman of Affiliated Publications, its
parent company, Bill was one of the most important and
influential citizens of Boston. He was also one of the most
modest and self-effacing. Bill was an old-school Yankee
gentleman, which is to say he was both a gentleman and
a gentle man.
Beneath his calm and dignified exterior was a constant
and consistent determination to help those in need.
That’s where Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston came in.
Among a host of non-profit organizations that Bill
supported with both his time and his money, BGCB was
high on his list of favorites, a family legacy. The Charles H.
Taylor Memorial Room, funded by Bill as part of the Green
Street renovation at the Charlestown Club, is named after
his great grandfather, the first publisher of the Globe.
Shortly after retiring from the Globe in 1998, Bill
launched a small family foundation to support non-profit
organizations in and around Greater Boston. One of the
guidelines of the application process was that grants
would not be made to the same organization two years
in a row. Mysteriously, however, that restriction seemed
to be overlooked, time and again, when it came to
applications from Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. “I think
we’ll waive that rule this year,” he’d say, approving another
request for funding.
Bill’s service on Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston’s Board of
Overseers began in 1963, almost half a century ago. From
that year to the day he died, Bill Taylor was one of BGCB’s
most enthusiastic supporters, frequently behind the
scenes. It was where this quiet man liked to be.
Tim Leland, a member of the Senior Advisory Board, was a vice
president and assistant to the publisher of the Globe.
Casimir “Cassie” deRham,
an ethical man
By Jeff Jones
Cassie deRham was a living
repudiation of the concept
of term limits. He served on
BGCB’s Board of Directors from 1972 to 1994, followed
by another nine years as a member of the Senior Advisory
Board, until his death. This was not unusual for Cassie, at
least not when it came to service to organizations to which
he had strong attachments. He served for decades on the
board of Mt. Auburn Hospital, the Clark Art Institute, the
Commonwealth School, the Women’s Educational and
Industrial Union, and St. Mark’s School, and he was active
on many of these boards until his death. When Cassie
made a commitment to an organization, he was in for the
long haul.
For most of his tenure on the BGCB Board, Cassie
served as the corporate secretary. Before there was a
formal Governance Committee, Cassie took personal
responsibility for ensuring the organization’s adherence to
its charter, bylaws and good governance practices. Cassie
was an ethical lawyer and, more importantly, an ethical
man. He was never bashful, and he had no reluctance to
speak up in the middle of a Board conversation even if he
knew that his comments might be unpopular, annoying
or contrary to a majority view. His motivation was always
to ensure that the organization was true to its principles.
He also knew that his opinion wasn’t the only one that
mattered, so he was not only a good speaker, he was also
a good listener.
During Cassie’s tenure, and with his enthusiastic support,
the organization changed dramatically. It began to serve
girls, expanded its service footprint with new clubhouses
in Chelsea and Dorchester, and the Board also expanded
and diversified, adding women, persons of color and
representatives from a broader range of backgrounds.
Cassie was proud to play a role in these changes, which
deepened his affection for, and loyalty to, BGCB.
As Josh Kraft wrote, with Cassie’s death BGCB “has lost a
dear friend, and the youth of Boston have lost one of their
most dedicated advocates.”
John Calkins, helped to
burnish our image
By John Harris
From the day John Calkins joined
our Board of Overseers in 1980
(he became a Director in 1982);
his advocacy for our organization was unflagging. His
many contributions were often reflected in questions and
suggestions he would make to others who would then
weave his wisdom into actions and policies for which
John received little credit, a factor which never caused
him to hold back on further offerings. I remember, when
I was Chairman, as well as before and after, I’d get a call
from John, who usually called me “Tiger” (an honorific he
bestowed on almost everyone), planting a subtle seed for
my consideration.
When he was associated with The Bank of Boston,
heading up its Public Relations Department, he helped
to burnish our image in the community and to buttress
our appeals for financial support from the Bank’s
various charitable trusts. He was a prime mover in our
participation for many years in the Arts & Antiques Show,
reflecting his interest in and knowledge of that subject.
Even when in recent years he had some health issues,
John was unceasingly upbeat, and although he had other
organizations in which he was involved, such as the U.S.
Military Academy at West Point, Boys & Girls Clubs of
Boston remained very important to him.
He truly believed that the Clubs provide a launching pad
for a young person’s success in life.
I’ll bet there are a lot of people who now answer to the
name “Tiger” behind the Pearly Gates.
John Harris, a member of the Senior Advisory Board, is a Senior
I NDEPENDENT A UDITOR’S R EPORT
To the Board of Directors
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, Inc.
Boston, Massachusetts
We have audited the accompanying statements of financial position of The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, Inc. (the
“Organization”) as of June 30, 2011 and 2010, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses and cash
flows for the years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Organization’s management.
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits.
We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America.
Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the
financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes consideration of internal control over
financial reporting as a basis for designing audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not
for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Organization’s internal control over financial
reporting. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting
the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles used and significant
estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that
our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position
of The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, Inc. as of June 30, 2011 and 2010, and the changes in their net assets and their
cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of
America.
