We asked some of you why you give sogenerously and consistently to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston when thereare so many non-profits asking for your support.We learned that, for many of you, giving time, dollars, or both toBoys & Girls Clubs of Boston and the youth whom we serve truly is aninvestment. You are confident that you are having an impact on a child’slife today, and that the behaviors and skills learned at the Club willsustain the child as he or she moves forward in life. Moreover, you are having an impact onthe future of our city, with benefits to all of us who work or live here.Invest in a child. Inspire a future.As our city continues to be gripped by violence, our Club members struggle to feel safeand maintain hope. Compelled by our mission, we turned to our Board, dedicated staff andmembers for inspiration. We asked what more we could do, and we responded by:■■■■■expanding our operations to six days per week at our two Clubs most affected by the violence;completing the renovation and expansion of our Blue Hill Club in Dorchester so that wecould serve 500 more youth who need us, with an emphasis on reaching more teens;reaching the $91 million mark on our way to our $100 million Comprehensive Campaigngoal. BOARD CHAIRDEAR FRIENDS OF BGCB,This past year at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston has been one ofremarkable achievement, important future planning, and inevitablechange. We served nearly 14,000 at-risk youth, passed the $91 millionmark towards reaching our $100 million Comprehensive Campaign goal,laid the strong foundation for a highly successful inaugural year at CampHarbor View, and affirmed a five-year Strategic Plan for the organization.We also learned in May that Linda Whitlock will step down as BGCB’sNicholas President and CEO in June 2008. For nearly 10 years, Linda hasbeen a remarkable leader, transforming the organization by expanding its footprint, doublingthe number of youth served, strengthening programming, as well as financial and staffingmodels, and setting a high standard of excellence for her dedicated staff.All of us who care about the youth of Boston and Chelsea are grateful to Linda for her wisdom,energy and compassion over this past decade. Her leadership will be felt for decades to comeas the children and teens who have benefited from her ideas and hard work become theeffective citizens and leaders that BGCB prepares them to be.The Board continues to work closely with Linda and her talented staff to ensure the successfulcompletion of the Comprehensive Campaign in June 2008, and to build momentum towards theimplementation of the agency’s five-year Strategic Plan. Simultaneously, our search committeewill help in managing the process of finding a new leader for the organization. The committeemembers were selected for their deep understanding of BGCB values, as well as the CEO’scritical role in articulating and extending our mission and providing organizational, operationaland fundraising leadership to our many stakeholders. The facility now features a pre-teen lounge and SmithFamily Teen Center with a quiet education room, computer access, games tables andoutdoor basketball court where teens can find fun and a safe haven. The Club also hasa newly rebuilt swimming pool—enclosed in a glass atrium with a roof that opens electronicallyto the sky—to allow for a year-round aquatics program, a state-of-the-art music studio, a fitnesscenter, a climbing wall and ropes course in the gym, and an upgraded commercial kitchen toserve more than 200 meals weekly through Kids Café. At all of our Clubs, the compassionate,professional staff provide forums for youth to talk openly about neighborhood violence, familyissues, their worries about the present, and their hopes for the future.MACWe were honored, in 2007, to announce Ginny and Pete Nicholas and Family as the previouslyanonymous $10 million donor to the Comprehensive Campaign. The Nicholases’ extraordinarychallenge gift, in the first year of the Campaign, helped us raise an additional $20 million—inten $2 million gifts—and gave the Campaign great momentum. ROAD MAP FOR THE NEXTFIVE YEARSSTRATEGIC PLANBain & Company: Strategic CollaborationFor more than nine months, a team of Bain & Company consultants, working pro-bono,guided Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston through a strategic planning process to develop aroadmap for growth over the next five years. Their research and analysis revealed anestimated 20,000 youth in need across Boston who do not have access to out-of-schooltimeprograms. She wanted to be a psychologist.But after meeting Josh Kraft, the Club’s Executive Director, she changed her mind.She wanted to be just like him and help kids who were just like she was. Joshencouraged Jessica. He coached her through the college application process, andhelped her secure financial aid when it became clear that her family could not affordthe tuition. Soon Jessica was at UMASS, studying psychology, while working parttimeat the Club. During her four years as the Club’s Education Director, Jessicaobtained a Master’s Degree in child psychology.Today, Jessica Rubecindo is Director of Boys & Girls Club of Boston’s new Club atthe Condon Elementary School in South Boston. Every day she reminds her staff thatthe most important thing is to make sure the members are happy, safe and learningnew things. In that way, she is just like Josh.Our organizationis poised forfurther innovationand expansionto meet the needs of at-risk youth,while we continue to meet the dailyneeds of our members by offeringfree, hot meals through Kids Café,free dental and vision screenings atsome Clubs, educational seminars,nutrition workshops, musiceducation, and so much more.SHARED-SPACE CLUBSShared-space Clubs were identified through the strategic planning process as a cost-effectivegrowth strategy that responds to community needs. We currently operate four school Clubs—including new Clubs at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston and the Sumner ElementarySchool in Roslindale—which provide the model for this expansion. Shared-space Clubs allow us toreach youth where the need is greatest, focus specialized programming towards select age groups,execute on a smaller scale where the need is intense but may not sustain a full Club, and createleadership and career development opportunities for staff.CAMP HARBOR VIEWBoys & Girls Clubs of Boston took a significant step towards our Strategic Plan goal when weresponded to a request from Mayor Menino and philanthropist and BGCB Senior Advisory BoardMember Jack Connors to operate Camp Harbor View, a new summer day camp located onLong Island in Boston Harbor. We assembled a dynamic and compassionate staff, including anexperienced, licensed social worker and healthcare professionals. We also collaborated with morethan a dozen partners to provide high-impact programming. In its inaugural summer, the Camphosted nearly 600 boys and girls ages 11 to 14 from at-risk neighborhoods across the city. Nearlytwo dozen campers are now engaged members at our Clubs.78

EFFECTIVE CITIZENS AND||LEADERSALUMNI INITIATIVEinvestThe 2006-2007 program year marked the official kick-off to our Alumni Initiative. Weare so proud that our alumni demonstrate the impact of our work every day throughtheir effectiveness as citizens and leaders. The investments made by our donors, boardmembers, staff and volunteers have inspired so many of our alumni to give back totheir Clubs and communities through their work and volunteer efforts. To date,more than 2,000 alumni have been registered in our database, having been engaged througha quarterly e-newsletter, events at the Clubs, and communications issued by individual Clubs.Our new web site will enhance communication with the alumni community.MACINSPIRE“The United States Navy heralds honor, courage and commitmentas our service core values. I first learned of honor in the games roomat the Club, and that it’s important to respect each other. At the Club,I learned of courage when a staff member taught us that it was okay tosay ‘no’ to the peer pressure that we got on the street corners. I learnedof commitment when another staff member encouraged me to give itanother try on the basketball court even though I was intimidated,embarrassed and horrible on the court. I have assisted a family of seven, living in a shelter and recentlyarriving here from Puerto Rico, to find food, clothing, and educational services for the children.I have met weekly with parents of an autistic Club Member to stay on top of how we can bestpromote their son’s success at the Club. I have sat on the floor in a circle with 10-year-old girls,explaining puberty and the life cycle. I have made three trips to the court house, five trips to a highschool, held 16 parent meetings, and four visits to outside agencies—all for one teen! I’ve driedtears, changed soiled pants, applied ice packs, and found lost jackets. I have painted pictures, readbooks, roller bladed around the gym, and shared pizza with some of the greatest kids in the world.And, unfortunately, I have sat in front of a group of teenagers that I care deeply about and had tobreak the news that one of their friends and fellow Club members had been murdered.
