The County of Riverside <strong>Probation</strong> Department has<br />

openings for <strong>Supervising</strong> <strong>Probation</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> positions<br />

at various locations throughout the County.<br />

$31.28-$41.99 per hour<br />

Under general direction, to supervise professional and support<br />

staff engaged in conducting investigations, supervising probationers,<br />

or supervising juveniles in a detention facility; to oversee specialized<br />

programs; and to do other work as required.<br />

This is the first level of supervision for both field and institutional<br />

operations. Incumbents plan, assign, and review the work of assigned<br />

staff; give guidance on departmental policy and procedures;<br />

and provide close supervision and training to newly hired staff.<br />

Positions assigned to field operations primarily supervise a unit of<br />

Deputy <strong>Probation</strong> <strong>Officer</strong>s; positions assigned to institutions primarily<br />

supervise a unit of Group Counselors. Incumbents may also<br />

oversee specialized programs or functions such as training and human<br />

resources.

Receives, screens, and assigns work; reviews and prepares reports and statistics; receives and<br />

reviews outside requests to furnish supervision of probationers residing within local or other jurisdictions.<br />

Plans and organizes community treatment programs; explains policies and procedures.<br />

Trains subordinates; prepares employee performance evaluations, attends and holds staff meetings.<br />

Represents the department before community groups and committees.<br />

May take charge of the office or institution in the absence of the division management staff.<br />

May supervise an area office; may invoke powers of arrest; may develop and supervise a specialized<br />

program, project, or function.<br />

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Knowledge of:<br />

The principles and techniques of employee supervision;<br />

the laws, rules, regulations, and codes pertaining to the<br />

functions, duties, and operations of a county probation department;<br />

policies and goals of the Riverside County <strong>Probation</strong><br />

Department; the legal rights and obligations of<br />

adult and juvenile services, and facilities of public and private<br />

agencies available within the community; functions<br />

and procedures of the criminal, juvenile, and civil courts;<br />

laws and codes governing the custody and care of juveniles<br />

Ability to:<br />

Plan and supervise the work of subordinates; train subordinate<br />

staff; prepare clear and concise reports; establish<br />

and maintain effective working relationships with others;<br />

speak effectively before groups.


REQUIREMENTS<br />

Applicants must meet the minimum educational requirements<br />

and possess the required experience as listed below:<br />

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university<br />

with a Bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in<br />

one of the behavioral sciences.<br />

AND<br />

Experience: Four years of experience in a position equivalent<br />

to Deputy <strong>Probation</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> with Riverside County.<br />

(indicate month and year degree was awarded); the name of<br />

the school; city and state of school location. Resumes without<br />

this information will not be considered.<br />

PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT<br />

Candidates must successfully complete a thorough criminal background investigation, involving<br />

both fingerprinting and use of a Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA), physical examination,<br />

and psychological evaluation. A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant<br />

from County employment.<br />

The physical evaluation will include but is not limited to: Vision: Applicants who wear glasses or<br />

contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 correctable to 20/20. Applicants<br />

must have normal peripheral fields and color vision.<br />

Hearing: Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 30dB at any of the first three frequencies<br />

and an average loss no greater than 30dB for all four frequencies. Hearing aides are not permitted<br />

to meet these requirements.<br />

Applicants cannot currently be on summary or formal probation.<br />

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship within three years after submitting a resume for employment.<br />
