BRINGING BOOKS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER SINCE 1995 ISSN 1177-0562
The Warehouse nets a great result
Some well-known stars from the netball
world joined the team from The Warehouse
to help raise funds for Duffy kids on May 9.
The Warehouse Logistics Team sponsor Duffy
schools in Auckland and Christchurch, but after
meeting Duffy General Manager (and ex Silver
Fern) Linda Vagana they hatched a plan to put her
contacts to good use!
The Otara Leisure Centre played host to a series
of games between Warehouse teams (including
some of the Yvonne Willering coached senior
management in very flattering wigs!). The grand
finale was a match between The Warehouse
and the Classic Ferns, featuring famous names
like Bernice Mene, Linda Vagana, Adine Wilson,
Leonie Leaver, Rita Fatialofa, Tania Dalton,
Vilimaina Davu and Temepara George.
More than $4500 was raised on the night and the
Duffy team was thrilled when Warehouse CEO
(and wigged star player!) Mark Powell decided
to match the funds raised. More than 650
Duffy kids from Leabank Primary School and
Parakai School will be receiving their books
in the coming year thanks to the generosity
shown by the public and The Warehouse.
Buy a pie for Duffy
NZ Bakels sponsor the very first Duffy school, Camberley
School in Hastings. They are also well-known for running
the annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.
We know pies aren’t an every day treat but if you’d like to support
Duffy on Friday 26 July just look for this logo. 20 cents from each
pie bought will go straight to Duffy to help us supply books to
some of our 100,000 plus children throughout New Zealand. Yum!
Hobbits make a
difference for Duffy
Our friends at
TheOneRing.net are
long-time Duffy sponsors
so we were thrilled when
they offered to support
us during their party
for the premiere of
The Hobbit on November
26 in Wellington.
Linda Vagana attended the
party along with hundreds of dedicated Hobbit
fans. Jed Brophy (a.k.a. Nori in the movie) was MC
and the crowd was beyond thrilled when Sir Peter
Jackson and Elijah Wood made an impromptu
appearance!
The event raised $2600 for Duffy Books in Homes
– enough to support almost 200 Duffy kids for a
whole year! An added bonus, thanks to Harper
Collins, was the gift of more than 200 copies of
The Hobbit for distribution to Duffy schools around
New Zealand.
A special thanks goes to Erica Challis of
TheOneRing.net and Vic and Raewyn James of
Red Carpet Tours whose time and effort made the
event such a success.
We can’t wait to see the next instalment later
this year!
Kia Ora, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia
Warm greetings, to all Duffy Books in
Homes schools, sponsors, role models,
supporters and families.
The weather over the last few weeks has
made it easier to sit down and relax with a
good book! I’m not sure where the first half
of the year has gone but we’re now in June
and planning for the 2014 year is already
underway.
Role Model assemblies for Book Offer One
were once again a successful event and I
was very fortunate to spend one week of
Role Models in Christchurch visiting our Duffy
schools. I was very humbled by the strength
and resilience of our Christchurch schools,
children, families and teachers with the
various challenges from building approvals
post earthquakes to school closures/
mergers. Our Christchurch communities are
just super amazing!
Upcoming events include Government
Book Week, Schools and Sponsors Get in
Touch Week and our annual competition for
Teachers/Coordinators for the Scholastic
Duffy Day Out Competition. I’m looking
forward to receiving the entries and meeting
the winners of our Scholastic Duffy Day Out
later in the year.
Mainfreight awards
excellence
Our original sponsors, Mainfreight,
have a tradition of going the extra
mile for the Duffy schools they
support. However, it’s not just those
56 schools that experience the
benefits of Mainfreight’s generosity.
The global logistics firm also provides
a high quality reference book, cup and
certificate to each Duffy school for their
end of year prizegiving.
The Mainfreight Award for Excellence in
Attitude is awarded to a senior student
that the school believes typifies its values
and work ethic throughout the year
Last year’s book prize was History Year
Te Aotahi Tuhaka was the proud winner
By Year – The Ultimate Visual Guide To
at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Mangatuna.
Events That Shaped The World from DK Sponsor needed
Books. The book brings history to life
through dramatic images and colourful maps and graphics.
Representatives from Mainfreight, Daily Freight, Owens and Chemcouriers were invited
to visit schools and help present the award – an opportunity which they all enjoyed.
Linda Vagana believes that Mainfreight’s support has been vital to Duffy’s success.
“Mainfreight have been a huge support to the
programme since day one,” she said.
A new addition to our Government Book
Offer this year is a section for our young
‘Advanced, Mature Readers’. Hopefully this
section will grow, providing more options for
our great Duffy readers.
As always, many thanks to all our Duffy
schools, principals, teachers, students and
parents for all your support and inspiring a
love of reading in our communities. Also,
our wonderful sponsors, supporters and our
Role Models – thank you for your partnership
in ensuring our programme continues to
inspire and reinforce the messages of book
ownership, and the connection between
reading and success.
Happy Reading
GENERAL
MANAGER
Thomas Akolo was last year’s winner from Bromley School. Here’s what the
school had to say about his achievements.
‘‘
Thomas is a wonderfully enthusiastic learner who always remains positive with
his classmates and adults. He consistently challenges himself to achieve to a high
standard academically. Thomas is always happy to take on responsibility and willingly
offers his help to others. He is a popular student with a great confidence in himself.
Grandparents get their own special day
Grandparents had the chance to be
celebrated just like mums and dads.
We make a point of rewarding
grandparents who have gone the extra
mile. They may have helped with coaching
a sports team, doing maintenance around
the school or even simply spending extra
time helping their grandchildren with
their reading.
In November, schools chose one lucky
grandparent to win the Caught Being a
Good Grandparent Award. Schools chose
their lucky grandparent in many different
ways. Children might have written stories
or poems about them or if the choice was
too hard then there might have been a
lucky draw. They were then recognised
at a special assembly during the week of
5 November.
Last year’s award was New Zealand
New Millennium, published by Penguin
Books. The book spotlights some of New
Zealand’s iconic images between the years
2000 and 2010 and was accompanied by
a special certificate.
Jonathan de Bruyn (left) and Geneviene Whatuira (right) brought along their Nanas to receive the
award at Westown School. Sponsor needed
LEFT: Beach Haven School recognised Janet Miller, grandmother of Matthew and Emma Tresham, Janet
has spent time in the school helping some of the children in Room 15 with their reading. Matthew and
Emma told their teachers what a great grandmother she is, always there for them and other family members,
supportive of everything they do and always encouraging them. School Sponsor: New World Warkworth
MIDDLE: Fairburn School’s award went to Mrs Felicity Fisher, grandmother of Leilani, Nickie, Joseph and
Ngatoria. Mrs Fisher was nominated by the teachers because she is always willing to help out in classrooms
and on trips. She looks after her grandchildren when they are sick and is teaching Tori to knit. Mrs Fisher
has had a long association with Fairburn School. Not only do her grandchildren attend but their mother also
went there. School Sponsor: Goodman Property Services (NZ) Ltd.
Duffy kids are Ready 4 Reading
The Ready for Reading (R4R) programme is going strong with 217 centres now enjoying the chance to give little ones
four books of their choice each year. Here are a just few pictures of the latest book presentations.
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: We bet this little guy from Opotiki Community Childcare Centre is proud of his brand new books! What a great turnout at Te Whare
Aroha o Nga Mokopuna who were dressed in black and white to recognise their special guest from the Magpies, Ihaia West. Mrs Wishy Washy was the guest of
honour for the Wacky Wednesday book presentation at KiNZ East Tamaki. The tamariki of Cornerstone Preschool and Education Centre in Gisborne love their
books and so do their parents!
What our centres are telling us
H Thank you so very much on behalf of
the tamariki, parents/whanau and kaiako
of Flatbush Kindergarten for this great
programme. It continues to have a valid and
important impact on the literacy development
of our tamariki and families. In recognition of
all the work that happens to ensure that this
valuable programme continues, please pass
on our sincere gratitude and appreciation to
all those involved in supporting and keeping
this programme running. We hope that the
R4R programme continues in perpetuity!!
H Our centre is located in a low
socio-economic area so the R4R
programme is very good for us.
I believe it has provided
opportunities for some of our
children who are unable to afford
books, encouraged some of our
parents to support their children’s
learning and also persuaded
parents to recognise the benefits
of reading books.
H
H
A love of reading is steadily increasing within our
whanau and tamariki. Quite often our tamariki
choose to read on their own without prompting,
which is great to see.
Parents and tamariki commented on how the
books have given them the opportunity to read and
spend time together. It was also great to hear that
the extended family – grandparents, aunties, uncles
and even siblings are involved with this. What an
awesome opportunity for bonding and adding to
shared learning experiences that are the basis for
positive memories.
Sponsoring a school means that each Duffy kid there
can enjoy a minimum of five free books every year as well as the
chance to receive regular weekly book awards and
other prizes throughout the year. This is in addition
to all the other services of the programme such as
the travelling Duffy Theatre group and the Kids at Home
preschool programme.
Maybe there’s a school near you that is in need of a
sponsor – for around $13.56 per child, per year, you can help
give the gift of reading to an entire community.
On these pages you’ll see a list of all our schools
in need of sponsorship along with the
approximate annual cost to support them.
If you see a school that you would like
to get involved with then please
Letters
Thank you for letting our school have the chance
to choose Duffy books for Term 2 next year. It was
an interesting experience. I’m sure everyone had a
fun time and enjoyed it as much as I did. I liked the
selection of books you had set out. I could choose
some for my little brother and his friends (he loves
car books) as well as choosing some for me and my
friends. Thank you for the little treats you gave us
for selecting Duffy Books. I have already used
my Christmas card.
I had a great time and again thank you for the
experience.
Yours sincerely
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and
your team for AAALLLLLLLLLLLL the wonderful things
you do for our school and schools across the country
when it comes to this awesome programme for our
children. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and
well deserved break. God bless you all, be safe,
Just a note to let you know how well received Gerald
Urquhart was by both students and staff at the recent
Duffy Hero Assembly at Bluff School. He related well
to all, gave very good messages about the importance
of reading in his life both from the professional side
and during his leisure time. As well as speaking to the
whole school he visited each classroom and presented
books and answered questions. Many thanks for
giving us the opportunity to host Gerald.
I would like to (on behalf of Gate Pa
School) thank everyone involved in the
Duffy show. We appreciate the hard
work going into such fantastic shows.
We are focussing a lot on respect and
acknowledgement of the many different
cultures in our school and we got the
same message from the show. The
children, and staff, were thoroughly
entertained and the message about
the importance of a good vocabulary
was clear - as well as the importance of
reading to learn new words.
Thank you once again
Yesterday we had Duffy Theatre. I just
wanted to let you know that our Year
7-8 children (who at this age are very
reserved ‘cause life is dumb) laughed
their heads off. They could relate to the
language and responded with laughter.
It was such a neat experience to watch
our children this way. So thanks heaps
for a great cast and storyline. Afi was
hilarious by the way. Thanks again and
well done to the actors for captivating
our audience the way they did.
