Pratt Library a $350,000 grant to
purchase eReaders and eBooks to
lend at all of our branches. We could
not be more excited for the future of
this format at our Library.
The award is the largest grant
for electronic devices and content
ever given to an individual
library in the United States, and
we are thrilled to offer a new
and expanded world of digital
material to our customers.
Thanks to The Weinberg
Foundation, the Pratt Library will
ensure that people in low- to
moderate-income neighborhoods have equal access
to digital material, from the latest bestsellers to
references and homework help. If you have a Pratt
Library card, you will have access to the bigger,
brighter and exclusive Pratt eLibrary.
eReaders are becoming more and more
mainstream. They are becoming so ordinary that
there are authors writing exclusively for eReaders.
Pratt customers will be able to borrow eBooks
anywhere, anytime there is a wi-fi connection
available. Customers who don’t have a Nook or a
Kindle at home can borrow an eReader from us.
The Pratt Library is among a growing number of
urban libraries offering alternative formats. We were
one of the first to offer video material, and one of
the first to offer audiobooks. Now we will be one of
the leaders in digital material.
We will keep building our collection of books in
every format. The Weinberg Foundation grant helps
us continue in our mission of offering information
for all, rich or poor, just as Enoch Pratt intended.
This is a truly, truly exciting time.

The number one question we are usually
asked: Are libraries going to be obsolete
in this age of eBooks and eReaders?
THESE ARE DEFINITELY EXCITING
AND CHANGING TIMES in both
the library field and publishing
industry. We are at the cross
roads of the book and digital
age. And the Enoch Pratt Free
Library has decided to embrace
and grow with it.
Thanks to a two-year,
$350,000 grant by The Harry and
Jeanette Weinberg Foundation,
the Pratt Library has launched the Pratt eLibrary. The
grant will pay for 3,000 new eBooks available exclusively to
Pratt Library cardholders. Most of the titles will be fiction
and popular non-fiction. New eReference titles will also be
purchased. These materials will be helpful for homework
and general reference and will include materials needed for
careers, colleges, business plans and many other subjects.
The grant will also enable Pratt to purchase 200 new
eReaders available to library customers at the Central
Library and all branches, ensuring that people in all
communities have access to these devices and eContent.
Plus, an electronic display featuring the Library’s eBooks
collection will be located at the Central Library and ten
branches to demonstrate how to select and check out
eBooks.
“It is the largest grant to a single library for eBooks
in the United States,” said Pratt Library CEO Carla D.
Hayden. “It is significant, and it shows we are willing to
spend on new technologies … it is another stage in the
Pratt Library’s transformation into a 21st-century library.”
A recent Pew Research Center
survey noted that 21% of American
adults have read an eBook in the
past year, and that four times more
people are reading eBooks on a typical
day now than two years ago. The
survey also states nearly one-third of
Americans own a tablet or eReader,
but few of them know that their
library is likely to lend eBooks.
In fact, more than three-quarters
of public libraries, including the
Pratt, lend digital material.

“This new grant for $350,000 will be used to build an
expanded eLibrary that addresses the transformation in
eTechnology, eBooks, and electronic content experienced
by public libraries today,” said Rachel Garbow Monroe,
President of The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg
Foundation.
The amount the Foundation awarded to the Pratt is
actually greater than the amount the Pratt asked for. “The
Weinberg Foundation approved the larger amount as a
result of the demonstrated need to build to capacity the
best and latest technology system for reading, that will be
equally available to all residents of Baltimore City,” said
Monroe. “In addition, the Foundation has extraordinary
confidence in the library’s CEO, Dr. Carla Hayden, and
believes with her leadership this grant will be put to
meaningful and lasting use.”
The eBook collection is very popular with Pratt
customers—more than 2,000 eBooks and downloadable
audios are checked out every month through the Maryland
Digital Library Consortium, the

Meet the Pratt’s
New Board Members
BARBARA BOZZUTO Barbara Bozzuto is an
entrepreneur with a wealth of public relations
and events experience. She has led the
Maryland Sports Corporation, Baltimore Office
of Promotion, and Baltimore Operation Sail,
among other groups, and served on a long list of boards,
including Bryn Mawr School, WYPR, St. Agnes Hospital and
the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Bozzuto currently
serves on the board of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
EDWARD S. DELAPLAINE, II Ted Delaplaine has
engineered breakthrough technology for the
National Institutes of Health and the Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research. He was lead
software and electrical engineer for livebiology
experiments aboard several Space Shuttle flights;
one was aboard Atlantis, in the final flight of the U.S.
Space Shuttle Program in July, 2011. Mr. Delaplaine’s
interests include reading, travel, astronomy, photography
and board sports.

The Pratt eLibrary is an extension of the Pratt
Library’s pioneering efforts in making eReaders and
digital content available to its public, many of whom
are of low-to-moderate income. In August 2011, the
Pratt became the first urban library system in the
United States to lend eReaders to its customers. The
eReaders were pre-loaded with more than a dozen
popular titles for adults, teens and children.
Hayden says that when The Weinberg Foundation

SCREENS—whether on a television, computer,
tablet or eReader—do not engage a child.
“Give a little kid a screen and he’s distracted
by it, but he’s not engaged. His brain is
engaged when there is interaction with a
trusted caregiver,” says Ms. Riordan. Give a child
an iPad or put him in front of a computer, and he
might stay busy with it, but he is not learning. Before
children can read, they learn through listening and
hearing.
“Listening and hearing happens more effectively
with books and stories,” says Riordan. “Listening to
someone talk to
you on a screen is
not as effective.”

Society. Dr. Jensen has also served on the boards of the
Baltimore Opera Company, Peabody Institute, and
MedStar Health, among many.
SAYRA WELLS MEYERHOFF Mrs. Meyerhoff
serves as a pro-bono attorney at the Legal Aid
Society of Maryland and serves on the boards
of the University of Baltimore, Baltimore
Museum of Art, Hospital for the Women of
Maryland, the LEADERSHIP Association and the Maryland
Institute College of Art, among many others. She returns to
the Board of the Pratt Library, where she previously served
as Vice President of the Board, co-chaired Pratt Presents
(the Library’s annual fundraiser), and chaired the
Legislative Committee.
BENJAMIN ROSENBERG Mr. Rosenberg is
chairman and founder of the law firm
Rosenberg | Martin | Greenberg. He is an
accomplished litigator at the state and federal
grant has run its course, the Pratt Library will continue
to invest in digital content. “People want eBooks and
we want to provide them,” said Hayden.
By building a strong digital presence, the Library
hopes to promote the Pratt as a one-stop shop for
eBooks and eReference through www.prattlibrary.org.
“This is exciting,” said Hayden. “The grant allows us
to provide equity of access to our customers. It allows
us to level the playing field.”

a nationally recognized expert in childhood learning who serves as the Pratt’s Chief of
Planning, Programs and Partnerships. “The little guys respond differently. Physical books
are better for them.”

introduce them to the world of opportunities opened
up by books.”
After a child has learned to read well, he or she
might enjoy an eReader. “Once you understand that
words make meaning, it doesn’t matter as much what
format the words are in,” says Riordan.
“Young children enjoy the closeness, warmth and
attention. This is something a tablet or eReaders
cannot provide.”
Teens, on the other hand …
“Teens adore eReaders,” says Deborah Taylor,
Coordinator of School and Student Services. Taylor,
a nationally recognized expert in teen and young
adult literature, knows that “motivation is a big issue
for teenagers. Curiosity about new technology, like
eReaders, is a strong motivator.”
In 2011 the Pratt Library and St. Ignatius Loyola
Academy partnered in a project called “eReaders to
Schools.” This program provided eReaders to eighthgraders
in the school, a tuition-free Jesuit school

level. Mr. Rosenberg currently serves on the Appellate
Judicial Nominating Commission of Maryland and is
co-chair of the Equal Justice Council of the Maryland Legal
Aid Bureau. He was recognized as one of the top ten
attorneys in Maryland in Baltimore Magazine’s 2007, 2010
and 2011 editions of Maryland Super Lawyers.
ROBERT L. WALDMAN Bob Waldman,
co-Managing Partner of Venable LLP, is an
attorney expert in tax-exempt organizations.
He has represented many nonprofits for more
than 20 years, and also has a thriving practice
in philanthropic and estate planning, employee benefits
and taxation. He was the recipient of the Daily Record’s
2008 Leadership in Law award given to people whose
professional and community leadership have had a positive
impact on Maryland, and was listed in the 2010-2012
editions of Maryland Super Lawyers.
ANNE WEST Anne West once served as an
administrative aide and assistant press officer
for Mayor William Donald Schaefer, jobs that
have prepared her for any difficulty. She
planned and managed the first two years of the
Inner Harbor New Year’s Eve Party. She has served on the
boards of Art with a Heart, Meals on Wheels, the Maryland
SPCA, the Learning Bank and many more public service

While the Pratt Library is excited
about the prospect of making eBooks
and eReaders available to all,
it is not abandoning its mission of
offering books—the old-fashioned,
made of paper and board kind.
The Pratt continues to buy
thousands of print books.
for boys residing in low-income communities, often
without Internet access at home.
For many of these students, this program gave the
boys their first experience with eBooks. The eReaders
were loaded with 20 titles—ten from the students’
reading list and ten chosen by librarians because they
thought they would be of interest and would encourage
the boys to read for pleasure.
The boys enjoyed the eReaders, and found that they
spent more time reading for fun. “They liked having
lots of books right in their hand,” says Taylor. “It
encouraged them to read. eReaders have the potential
to do that for teens.”
The boys with these devices were much more likely
to look up a word in the eReader’s built-in dictionary
than if they had read the traditional printed version.
They did have a few complaints, however. “The school
would not allow them to take their eReaders home
with them often enough,” says Taylor. The boys
wanted even more eBooks to read. “Now that’s a
nice problem to have.”

Charitable Giving
During These
Uncertain Times
More-so this year than any other year in recent
history, nonprofit organizations like the Pratt Library
will depend on charitable contributions from donors
like you, and likewise, year-end tax planning plays
an extremely important role in giving.
I’M SURE EVERYONE has heard of the “Fiscal Cliff” or
“Taxmageddon,” or any other number of terms
used to explain major tax and budgetary changes
scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2013.
Nearly everyone will be affected in some manner;
although with an upcoming presidential election and
a new Congress in the wings, the rule of our times is

“I give to the Pratt because I love to read more than anything else,”
says Muriel Berkeley, who spent a good part of her working life in the
trenches of the Baltimore City Public Schools. “I just retired. People
ask me what I want to do now. They want me to say I’m going on a
cruise or something, but I say I will have more time to read.”
BERKELEY HAS GIVEN GENEROUSLY TO THE PRATT LIBRARY FOR
YEARS. In 2012 she gave to the Pratt Library’s Summer Reading
Program, which helps schoolchildren avoid “summer slide,” a
loss of academic skills that students (particularly those living in
underserved communities) may experience in July and August.
This loss is nearly impossible to make up.
Berkeley is inspired by the history and tradition of the Pratt
Library. Her sister, a librarian on the West Coast, studied
the Pratt in school. “The Pratt makes information available
to everybody!” she says. “For some people their only access to
computers and the Internet is at the Pratt Library, and that is so
important in this world.”
She did not grow up in Baltimore, but her three daughters did.
Every Saturday they ran errands, and the first stop was the Govans
News Know-How
With a daily tidal wave of news and information from
TV, websites, radio, newspapers, Twitter and Facebook,
it is often difficult to determine whether the “news”
is actually news or opinion. Is it factual or hearsay?
THIS FALL, the Pratt Library is hosting “News
Know-How,” a program that helps teens
learn how to separate the signal from the
noise in our jumbled infosphere, and how
to apply their independent judgment to the
news of the day.
News Know-How is a pilot program of the
American Library Association and the News
Literacy Project, a Bethesda, MD-based nonprofit.
It is being funded by Open Society Foundations.
Roswell Encina, the Pratt’s Director of
Communications and a former television news
reporter, and Deborah Taylor, Coordinator of School
and Student Services, lead the Pratt’s program.
“Most Americans used to get their news from
three broadcast television stations, a couple of radio

“uncertainty.” Everything is subject
to change at any time. What is
currently scheduled to happen,
effective January 1 is the following:
. Current 2% Payroll/FICA Tax
“holiday” expires
. Bush Tax Cuts expire
. Additional Medicare taxes prompted by
the Affordable Care Act ( “Obamacare”)
come into play on investment income for
certain high income tax payers
. Other major legislative budget cuts will
affect many aspects of the economy.
All of these items happening at once
create what is known as the Fiscal Cliff.
So, how should this affect your year-end
charitable giving?
First, I strongly recommend a year-end tax
projection for 2012, and further into 2013, to
see how these tax law changes are going to affect you.
Legislative budget cuts will no doubt have a major
impact on public monies being used to fund not-forprofit
charitable entities. That’s why it’s so much more
important this year to look closely at making much
needed contributions to organizations like the Pratt

stations and one or two local newspapers,”
says Encina. “Broadcast stations were bound
by a fairness doctrine to give opposing sides
equal time. Newspapers generally balanced
their editorial pages and presented differing
points of view.”
Twenty-four-hour cable news is not
bound by the fairness doctrine, nor are
talk radio, Internet forums, Facebook and
Twitter, reality TV or infotainment. “In
News Know-How, we will show teens how to evaluate
Library to offset likely government funding reductions.
Making charitable contributions by year-end can
happen many different ways. You can simply write
a check before year-end. Many charities also accept
credit cards. As long as you charge the contribution
by December 31, you can receive your charitable
contribution deduction this year even though you don’t
pay your credit card bill until 2013!
The least expensive way to make a charitable
contribution is to make a gift of appreciated publicly
traded securities, as long as these securities were held
for investment and have been held for over a year.
Doing so will entitle you to a charitable contribution
deduction equal to the fair market value of the
securities at the time of the contribution, and you will
not be subject to a capital gains tax on the appreciation
in excess of your cost (tax basis) of these securities.
All of this information is in summary form. Based on
your own particular circumstances, I recommend you
ask your personal tax advisor before acting on anything
discussed above.

“My oldest daughter is an amazing reader. By the time we got home she would
have read all her books.” At that point Berkeley, exhausted from the day’s errands,
would (usually) get everyone in the car again and go back to the library.
“It’s good to live in a city that has such a fine library system. I know my gift will
be well-used,” she says. “I have confidence in the management, history and tradition
of the Pratt.”
She is reading Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables because she loved the
musical, and she finds the characters fascinating. She is a self-described
“big Harry Potter fan.” One of her favorite characters is Professor
Dolores Umbridge, “the personification of an evil school system
bureaucrat.”
There is usually a pile of reading on the bedside table, and the pile
can get quite high. “One of my daughters had a nightmare that
I was crushed by the pile of books by my bed,” she laughs.
“Reading is really important because with air travel and the
Internet the world is smaller, and we have to learn together on
this planet.” Berkeley cites the proverb about never criticizing
a man till you have walked a mile in his shoes, and says “Life
doesn’t always give you the opportunity to get into someone
else’s skin, but books do.”

will visit a local television studio to see a news show
broadcast and to talk to news directors and reporters
to learn how they decide what to include in a
broadcast and what not to include.
The teens will also visit the Baltimore Sun newsroom
where reporters and editors will discuss how they
choose the news for the next day’s paper—and
today’s website.
Seasoned print and broadcast journalists will teach
Baltimore teens to sort fact from fiction in the news.
Students will learn how to compose a letter
to the editor, request a correction, post a
comment, and ask questions of a journalist
or blogger. Teens will discuss and evaluate
local news coverage, and post their ideas and
conclusions online.
“In today’s mass media environment it is
critical that students are taught to analyze
news coverage,” said Barbara Jones, director
of the American Library Association’s Office
for Intellectual Freedom. “Through News
Know-How, students will be given the tools
to assess the accuracy and credibility of news
and information access across various media
and platforms.”
