For students attending part-time day,<br />
evening classes and Saturday workshops
Welcome<br />
Thank you for choosing <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong> Adult Education for your course, we hope your experience<br />
here will be interesting, inspiring and enjoyable. If you are new to the <strong>College</strong> please take some<br />
time to familiarise yourself with any information provided and the location of your course<br />
room(s) and other utilities. If you are a returning student, welcome back, and thank you for you<br />
continued support of the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
You should now have enrolled as a student following your choice of course, or group of courses.<br />
If you have not received your receipt of payment yet, this will be provided during the first<br />
session.<br />
If you were a late applicant for your course you may need to finalise your enrolment. You can<br />
complete this during the first session of your course by visiting the Adult Education (AE) office.<br />
If your course runs for one term (10 weeks) then you can enrol for subsequent terms during the<br />
advance booking week, information on which will be provided nearer the time. If you would<br />
like to repeat or enrol on the next course please contact the AE office by phone or enrol online.<br />
If you need to contact the AE office, it is open from 08.30 to 20.00 and can be found<br />
behind reception, you can phone the office on 01223 278002, or extension 480 if phoning<br />
internally, or you can visit our website where you will also find a range of information and<br />
online enrolment at www.hillsroadadulteducation.co.uk.<br />
First Session<br />
Your tutor or the AE office may contact you before the first session if specialist materials are<br />
required. If you have any questions regarding materials required, please contact the AE office.<br />
<strong>Student</strong>s are expected to bring their own materials, unless specified in the AE prospectus or<br />
further details sheets.<br />
On arrival, you will be given directions from the main pedestrian entrance off <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong>, at the<br />
front of the <strong>College</strong>. Disabled students are entitled to park in the rear car park, please request a<br />
car park permit, obtained via the AE office prior to your first session. If you require disabled<br />
access please inform the AE office at the time of enrolment as you may need further information<br />
about the use of lifts to gain access to some <strong>College</strong> areas.<br />
<strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong> Sports and Tennis Centre<br />
Membership is free for Adult Education students for the duration of their course. For details<br />

General facilities<br />
As a student at the <strong>College</strong> many facilities are available for your use. The library has a wide<br />
range of books, periodicals, videos and newspapers available and is open Monday to Thursday<br />
from 16.00 to 17.30. Your student card (displaying your photograph and AE office signature) will<br />
act as your library card if you wish to register and borrow items. Please refer to the Library &<br />
Resources Centre guide for further details.<br />
If you wish to use a computer, usernames and passwords can be obtained on request from the<br />
adult education office unless already issued via your tutor. Each student must read and sign a<br />
user agreement declaration obtainable from their tutor. The computers are available in the<br />
Atrium, adjacent to café direct between 18.00 and 19.00 Monday to Thursday.
It may be possible for adult IT/computing students to negotiate access to an additional<br />
computing suite at other times. Please contact the AE office if this facility is required.<br />
Refreshments can be obtained at the <strong>College</strong> café. This facility is available from 17.30 to 20.30,<br />
Monday to Thursday during academic terms. Vending machines are also available adjacent to<br />
the café for those requiring snacks when the catering staff are not available.<br />
A public telephone is situated on <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong> at the front of the <strong>College</strong> site.<br />
We hope that you find the facilities meet your needs and provide a pleasant and stimulating<br />
atmosphere in which to work. In order to maintain a high standard we ask all students to show<br />
consideration in respect of litter and general care.<br />
No Smoking<br />
The entire <strong>College</strong> site is a no-smoking area. There is a designated smoking<br />
area provided on the pavement on Purbeck <strong>Road</strong>.<br />
Parking at <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong><br />
<strong>Student</strong>s are encouraged to travel to <strong>College</strong> on foot, bicycle or bus. There are bicycle parking<br />
racks at the rear of the <strong>College</strong> (entrance from Purbeck <strong>Road</strong>) and a bus stop in front of the<br />
<strong>College</strong>. Please visit www.stagecoachbus.com or phone Traveline on 0871 200 2233 for<br />
information about local bus services. For students travelling to <strong>College</strong> by car, please be aware<br />
that only disabled students are entitled to park at the <strong>College</strong>, subject to availability of spaces.<br />
Permits are available from the Adult Education office.<br />
<strong>Student</strong>s are encouraged to use the multi storey car park located at Clifton <strong>Road</strong> Leisure<br />
Park. Reduced parking rates apply after 6.30pm.<br />
If students choose to park in roads near the <strong>College</strong>, please respect the needs of the local<br />
residents.<br />
There is no parking on Purbeck <strong>Road</strong> which is a private, non-through road. Please note<br />
that the double yellow lines are enforced.<br />
Advice and Guidance<br />
During your course at <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong> your tutor will be able to help you with any difficulties you may<br />
be experiencing in your studies/activities. If you are following a particular course leading<br />
towards further study you may need to complete an application form and/or attend an interview<br />
at another institution. <strong>Student</strong>s in need of special support or consideration during assessment<br />
and examination periods must notify their AE tutor and/or the AE office as soon as possible. The<br />
college operates a policy for those students who wish to appeal in respect of tutor assessed<br />
work under examination conditions.<br />
Careers advice is available through the <strong>College</strong>'s Careers Department situated in the Library.<br />
You can drop in for general information on Monday - Friday (09.00 - 17.00) or make an<br />
appointment for an interview during the daytime or early evening.<br />
All part-time students can obtain further support and advice from the Director of Careers and<br />
Higher Education or the Senior Tutor (part-time students). Further details are available on the
<strong>College</strong> website: www.hillsroadadulteducation.co.uk or via the guidance sheet in your student<br />
pack.<br />
Health and Safety<br />
All students are to abide by the college Health and Safety procedures. All classes are<br />
informed about fire evacuation procedures at the start of their course. Disabled students should<br />
complete an emergency evacuation form to ensure that the <strong>College</strong> staff can provide<br />
appropriate support for such students to leave the buildings in a safe manner. A copy of the<br />
form can be obtained from the Adult Education office.<br />
Emergencies<br />
The <strong>College</strong> has a fire alarm system to be used only in the event of a fire or gas leak. Each<br />
room has a clear instruction sheet available to indicate the nearest exit route. Please ensure<br />
that you are familiar with the instructions. If in doubt, ask your tutor or the receptionist for<br />
help. A demonstration bell will sound at some time between 20.15 and 20.30 on the first<br />
session of each term.<br />
Emergencies related to personal accident should be managed by the tutor. If the tutor is not<br />
present or is involved in the accident telephone the Duty Caretaker (dial 07500 472100) or<br />
<strong>College</strong> reception (dial 0) immediately.<br />
Coursework and plagiarism policies<br />
The coursework and plagiarism policies are designed to ensure that students fulfil course and<br />
awarding body requirements for assessed work. A number of our AE courses will be unaffected<br />
by the policies but students following accredited courses are recommended to take particular<br />
note of such policies and related procedures.<br />
