Samantha (Sam) Brown, accounting assistant II in
the Student Billing Office, got married on August
4th and has officially changed her last name to Gilbert.

U 2 Can go to Ireland
Organizers are looking for staff, faculty and
students interested in participating in the 2013
Foreign Cultural Experience, a March 8-March 17
trip to Ireland. The trip will visit Dublin and will
center on Killarney, with day trips planned from
that town in Southwest Ireland, in County Kerry.
The event is set for Friday, Oct. 19, from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m., and is free and open to the public. The show
will be held in the Transportation Technology building
and the adjacent Sustainability Center. Contact

A Monumental Effort
Anthony Tafuri, who teaches drawing and metal
arts in SMCC’s Art Department, took on a larger
project recently as part of his business, Tafuri
Studios.
Tafuri restored the bronze components of the
Augusta Civil War Monument in the state’s capital,
partnering with New Hampshire-based company
Pro Point Restoration. The towering monument
has an inscription that reads, “In honor of her heroic
sons who died in the war for the Union and to
commend their example to succeeding generations
this monument is erected by the City of Augusta
A.D.1881.”

SMCC Show to Feature Alternative
Fuel Vehicles
If you’ve even wondered about alternative fuel vehicles,
what they look like, how they run, etc., then you may
want to check out an October event co-hosted by
SMCC and Maine Clean Communities. The Odyssey
alternative fuel vehicle show is part of a national day
held nationwide. At SMCC’s South Portland Campus, it
will feature dozens of alternative vehicles, with everything
from racecars to heavy-duty work trucks – and
experts who can talk about performance, maintenance,
and how to fuel them up, etc.
