As I write this May has turned to June. Since I last hacked away at the keyboard Club
Racing has held its first two events plus the driver’s school and Solo has put three events
into the books.
By the time you probably read this, summer will have just started, Club Racing will have
held its event at Lime Rock, the Region will have run a small PDX at
Lime Rock, the Solo Program will have run a Starting Line school, a
junior karting school, and the fourth points event of the year.
IN THIS ISSUE:
Rally had Big Lap 17 on June 8 and depending on how fast our
postal service gets this to your mailbox the Okemo RallyCross is
either just completed or right around the corner.
That’s a lot in one month to choose from. In fact out of the five
weekends in June, four had a New England Region event happening,
and some more than one.
Why am I rehashing a month’s worth of events after the fact To
point out that there are plenty of ways to get value out of your
membership. We tend to pigeon hole ourselves into one discipline
and stay in that comfort zone, never venturing out into a different
direction to see how the rest of the Region plays with cars.
At the Annual Awards Ceremony, I challenged those in attendance to do just that. Go
out and explore.
Some have. Specifically I’ll mention Clifton Kangas who has taken is RallyCross Impreza
and his outgoing personality to all three (as of this writing) Solo events this year, even
taken home a trophy or two. I’ve seen a few other club racers at Solo this year as well.
Someone is reading this right now thinking “Yeah I do want to do more, but with three
different programs how do I figure out what to do”
Well do I have good news for you. We have an event in August where you can get
involved in all of our programs in a single weekend.
Racing Against Leukemia Weekend is our most important event of the year. First and foremost,
we get the opportunity to raise thousands of dollars for the UMass Memorial Fund
to be used toward leukemia research. It is also the only other time besides the annual
meeting when the entire region has an opportunity to gather together.
But it is also your chance to try something new. Step out of the comfort zone and see
what else the club offers. With all three programs running, there are plenty of opportunities
to see how the other two –thirds of the club lives. All you need to do is look
inside the front cover, pick something new and contact the person in charge. It really is
that easy,
HERE
TO
SPEAK
MY
MIND
By Jon Lamkins
Let’s go for a drive
I think I’ve been reading too many articles in Hemming’s Classic Car Magazine and Hot Rod Classic,
because I’ve been imaging what times were like back in the 50’s and 60’s. Highways were being built.
The economy was going along fine. Gas was (relatively speaking) cheap. And more and more families
in the USA were getting a car.
American Automobile manufacturers were building new cars catering to family needs of transportation
with whatever level of luxury you could want and afford. Meanwhile, the youth of America were
salvaging 20’s and 30’s cars from junk yards and fields, lightening the cars, adding bigger engines, and
building hot rods. Manufacturers would then get into the muscle car wars jumping onto the horsepower
band wagon. Somewhere in the mix, you had the VW Beetle leading the small car charge and
providing the basis for a blooming kit car industry.
No, I haven’t forgotten the class of cars most dear to us, the sports car. Whereas the American car was
designed as transportation and the hot rod/muscle cars were designed to go fast and burn rubber, the
sports car placed a premium on handling and driver enjoyment. I’m envisioning a light weight, two seat
convertible, primarily British but possibly Italian, German, or other European manufacturer.
While people certainly did go for a ‘Sunday Drive’ in their family, muscle, or hot rod car, I feel the sports
car gave you the best experience as a driver. Top down, wind in your hair, enjoying both scenery and
the twists and turns in the road.
Flash forward to the 21st century. Most families have two vehicles. Pick-up trucks, SUV’s, and Crossovers
are more popular that cars. Most vehicles come with more standard features than we can count on both
our finger and toes, and technology is so prevalent that vehicles have more electronics and computing
powers than computers from the late 20th century. And while some may hate this complexity, it does
make even the most basic vehicle of today, safer and better handling than the
cars of the era we just came from.
When’s the last time you went for a drive, purely for the enjoyment of driving and
not to get anywhere in particular Granted, gas isn’t cheap but vehicle mileage
is improving yearly. To this extent, here are some roads in Connecticut that I
find ‘fun’ to drive on. It’s just a small sample and I’m sticking to number routes for
simplicity. (Watch for a thread in the ner.org forums so everyone can contribute)
Cornwall Bridge.
• Route 4 Between Goshen and Cornwall Bridge: The Scenery as you drop into
Mohawk valley from the intersection with Routes 43 and 128 down into the village
of Cornwall is very breath taking. Curves between Cornwall and Cornwall Bridge
are just challenging enough.
• Route 109 between East Morris and Washington Depot: Relatively straight but many up and downs
through rolling farm land.
• Route 140 between Stafford Springs and Ellington. Flat, with enough turns to make it enjoyable.
• Route 169 between Southbridge, MA and Brooklyn, CT. Country Road, take me home. . .
LOOKIN’ BACK: Bryar Motorsport Park, about 1982. A Showrom Stock B Chevy Citation (they were
relatively quick!) and a BMW negotiate the turn two complex. The approximate location would probably
be turn three of the NHMS oval. It was a real drive in the country side in those days. Photo: George Miller
RAL WEEKEND
AUGUST 10 AND 11
Driver’s….Start Your (Fundraising) Engines! It’s
hard to believe, but our annual Race Against
Leukemia (RAL) weekend is just around the
corner. Last year’s RAL/NER Charities event was
a huge success raising over $17,000. What a
truly heartwarming display of our member’s
generosity, compassion, and drive to support
the need to cure cancer! And what a FUN
weekend as well!! When else can you have the
opportunity to participate in Road Racing, Solo
& RallyX all in one weekend at NHMS …I dare
you to try all 3!!
How can you fire up your fundraising efforts
Let your friends, family & co-workers know you
are Racing- For- A- Cure. For further information,
or to set up a fundraising webpage on our
website (see http://www.
ner.org/region/racingagainst-leukemia)
so they
can sponsor your efforts.
If you have any questions
or are interested in joining
the steering committee,
which organizes the
weekend, please contact
Jody Fisher at
401-486-6911.
Donations and Raffl e
Items Will Be
Greatly Appreciated.
Our Annual Race Against Leukemia is New
England Regions’s largest event of the year to
reach out to our community and assist in this most
worthy endeavor! As in previous years, many
raffles are offered during the festivities, but we
need you to help assist with the donations.
Anyone who can help with a donation of gifts or
services (it’s a great way for your business to say
we care!) for the Raffle please contact Linda Kogan
at lkogan at charter.net or Jody Fisher at Jody
jfisher@gallothomas.com
In advance we really
appreciate the many
that step forward...NER
really appreciates your
dedication and help.
Last year, RAL’s highlight may have been the opportunity to
bid and donate for the removal (shaving) of Jerry Rigoli’s Ho
Chi Minh beard. What will it be this year Our RAL committee
surely promises something is up their sleeve to make this the
fun-filled weekend of the year!
PIT TALK May June 2013 5
T.a.H.-dah!
Of the most fundamental concepts in performance
driving, the management of latitudinal and
longitudinal force among a car’s wheels (in
accordance with the weight transfer/loading of
those wheels) is, in my opinion, the most rewarding
to grasp and easiest to picture mentally – despite
the length of this first sentence. Let me back up and
break down this idea, called the friction circle, for
you:
To begin with, we’re fortunate that most cars have
four wheels, each with some form of suspension,
shock-absorbing capacity, and relatively grippy
rubber tires at their corners. Whether front-,
rear-, or all-wheel drive, understanding how this
big mass of metal floating on springs over two
steerable tires at the front and two straight ones
at the rear is pretty much the same. However,
if you want to learn how to hot lap your Deuceand-a-half,
Contraption, I’m sorry; I can’t help you here.
The points of contact those four tires make with
the surface of the road (or dirt, as the case can
be) are called contact patches. Each one is a surprisingly
small amount of two-dimensional area (for holding up all that
weight, anyway – and at high speed, no less!). The input
of force between the car and the road – and, keeping with
Newton’s laws, the road and the car – only through these four
areas is what creates all the motion in driving, from parking lot
creeping up to F1 velocity.
Contact patches are not a constant size; our pneumatic
tires can stretch and broaden the area of interface for these
forces to be passed through.
Conversely, they can also shrink,
lessening the amount of force
which can be transferred. Picture
even regular street driving
to see why, especially under
acceleration and braking: the
physical properties of the car
and its suspension above the
road cause it to pitch rearward
and forward, respectively.
Steering left or right causes a
similar reaction, rolling to the
opposite side. This spring motion
dynamically reallocates the
overall downward force gravity
is exerting on the road through
THE FRICTION
CIRCLE:
ONE OF THE
BASICS OF
CAR CONTROL
The right-hander at the bottom of the hill at NHMS is always an area
for the case of front wheel unloading (also a small bump assists in
the display as well). Maurizio Cerasoli gives a classic example at
the recent Triple Play Regionals. Photo: Roz Rositoski
the car’s tires and, thus, contact patches, causing
some to grow while others will shrink. When it comes
to fast driving, knowing which contact patches have
grown and are offering the most potential force
(especially for acceleration, which is what racing is
all about) is paramount. Learning to exploit the extra
grip offered at opportune moments, without going
that extra bit too far, is what yields the precious
hundredths in your laptimes.
Perhaps you can picture a car “on the edge”, nearly
powersliding through a right-hand turn with
its left rear tire really pushed down hard into
the pavement and the right front so unloaded
it’s actually hanging in the air, the other two
tires somewhere in the middle. This is not an
easy situation to take care of for a newer
driver. So, let’s instead imagine a car which
is currently neutrally balanced, but traveling
down a straight at 75 mph. It needs to enter a
relatively sharp left turn up ahead. To maximize
the time spent at high speed (racing: be at
high speed more than the others and you win),
you spend the least amount of time braking
for this turn, and the least amount of time
possible not accelerating. Fortunately, with the proper understanding
and technique, this time only braking and/or turning is not very
long at all – certainly not as long as it used to be when the general
consensus was that a driver could only touch the gas pedal once the
car was fully out of a corner.
Coupled with fantastic rubber tires, cars today have great brakes.
Discs suffer much less fade than drums, and friction material is
greatly improved over the days of leather straps. Brake hard on
the race track! It’s the way to get the most force (“g”s) out of pretty
much any car. So, that’s what
we do in this hypothetical:
we brake, let’s say up to a
maximum of 2g, almost locking
the tires with just a hint of
sonic feedback from the tread
blocks vibrating with all of that
energy flowing through. This
pitches the car forward, and
it stays there as we continue
to brake toward the turn-in for
the bend. We’ll be turning the
steering wheel at that point.
But, it’s not possible to turn
while already maximizing the
contact patches up front for
braking. Doing that would
6 PIT TALK
push the interaction of road and
rubber over the brink to where the
tire just slides over the pavement
(and crumbles away in smoke and
dust), rather than meeting up with
it perfectly, if only instantaneously
(remember that a rolling wheel isn’t
actually moving relative to the ground
at the point where it meets the ground,
but the center of it is moving forward
at a speed, and the top of it is actually
moving forward relative to the ground
at twice that speed. It’s trippy, man).
Friction is what is holding all this
together, and the least friction is
available when the two objects are sliding across each other (dynamic
friction). We want to keep that rolling friction (which is really a variation
on the strongest friction, the static, or “not sliding” variety) working for us,
but only just barely. As it turns out, there’s actually a spike in available
friction at that brink where sliding is about to begin; the most force can be
achieved with the tiniest bit of a tire’s
“scrub” under braking or acceleration,
or “slip angle” while turning, but it
takes time and practice to finesse a
car to that level.
Back to our example: We are braking
at 2g, and want to turn the car at
its maximum performance potential,
also theoretically set at 2g (some
cars won’t corner as well as they
brake, others will do better. This one’s
nice and even). To keep those fronts
working for us and get them to steer,
we’ve no choice but to release some
brake pressure and (if we’re efficient
with our timing and wasting as little
as possible, anyway) simultaneously
feeding in some smooth steering
input to the left. This will allow those
nicely loaded, fat contact patches to
change the car’s direction up front
while still getting some braking done
(but “trailing” away). The friction circle
itself is a way to visualize this change
graphically: on a graph of the car’s
capability with forward and rearward
axes (braking and accelerating)
and side-to-side axes (right and left
turning force), the car is keeping at
its limit, which is a certain radius (in
this case, 2g) from the neutral point at
the center. If we were to keep braking
at the 2g limit but start steering at a
level which would yield another g of
force (if we had supernatural tires),
we would be steering and braking at
a combined force of over 2.5g (the
exact number can be found through
some mathematical formula), which is
outside the circle and just isn’t possible
for this car. In reality, that would most
likely result in a ton of understeer (the
car would keep going straight despite
the steering input) and probably at a
scary speed!
The fact that the geometric representation is a circle rather than some kind
of jagged star shape is also a sign of the need to be smooth and carefully
measured with your inputs at the steering wheel and pedals, as stepping
too far beyond that boundary is all too easy while you’re near the limit.
All of that space within the circle, however, is area where you can be
more abrupt with inputs, which
is something you sometimes
need when traveling within
the car’s limits on the public
roads and you’re forced to
make an emergency-avoidance
maneuver.
Finishing our example, we’ve
smoothly transitioned from full
braking to braking and turning,
still keeping the tires at their
squealing limit and exerting
maximum force. We’ve gotten
to the apex where we’ve pretty
much transitioned all of that
braking to steering input alone,
and our foot is moving off of
the brake pedal back to the
accelerator. We can now do
the same process in reverse for
the exit of the corner, “opening
up” the turn while we start to
transition the weight in the car
to the rear with some smooth
acceleration. Another handy
visualization is that of the string
tied to a point at the bottom of
the steering wheel and the top
of the pedals. When you have
Thompson Road Course to Re-open,
and requests your “vintage” photos
As I'm sure many of you are aware efforts are well underway to re-open the road racing course
at Thompson Speedway. The planned opening is for June of 2014. As Jerry Rigoli announced at
New Hampshire, NER has signed up for two dates in 2014; one in early July and the other in early
October.
The track will be approximately 1.7 miles long. The design of the track will be similar to the original
road course with some changes made to add a couple of interesting corners and passing zones.
Dave jones chases down a corvette at the exit of the
Some infrastructure construction has already begun; running power and water lines, cutting trees (but “Esses” back in ‘74. Photo: Stan Clinton
not the big maple in the infield!) moving dirt for much more paddock space and solo activities and
building several new support buildings. The actual track work will start in November once the current season wraps up.
With the re-opening of the road course, Thompson will be putting together a history of the track with a display of pictures from the beginnings of the
road course up to the new construction. They have many photos of the old track but are looking for more. With that, we need your help. We are
seeking photos of racing activities at the old track. Action shots, interesting items or famous (infamous) people at the track.
Any help is much appreciated. Please email us at roadcourse@thompsonspeedway.com with any photos or comments.
Thank you — Lou Gingerella
Championship
“Well now, wasn’t that exciting….”
– storm prior to the February Annual Banquet
By Eddie Savage
Moore Airfield – Sunday. ‘Tis not really winter; still not spring. I consider it “officially”
spring at Devens, only when the pollen wafts on high, and the waist-high dirt-covered
snow mounds acting as Armco at the Tower corner are no more. Early April at Moore
Airfield is alluring in a haunting way and manner; it’s stark, dark and dreary in attitude.
Still brown, still cold, still seemingly devoid of most life and still unforgiving; and then we
arrive to light a new season fire...

Harkening back a few months, the New England Region SCCA had 2 annual banquets
to speak of, to start the 2013 season. Held at the Royal Plaza in Marlborough, Mass, our
first banquet was brazenly interrupted in newsworthy fashion by a snowstorm that resulted
in a road closure announcement by our Governor (Dude, this is New England, what,
you no got 4-wheel drive). Our second attempt at a banquet was pleasantly fashioned
together a month later in late March. I will say, the make-up banquet was lean and mean,
and a rather nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon between office chores. For me, a
“Thanks” to the organizers for getting it done that way!
Points Event #1.
Solo Airways
Ft. Devesn, MA
April 7, 2013
With the crowning glory stuff out of the way, a few weeks later Solo found its path-worn
road meandering up the Ayer-Woodsville hillside. We wake to a Sunday not unlike any
other for the times, overcast conditions, cool (55 if we got lucky, and there was that wind
chill), wind and no wind, and then more wind again. Even the local bears took a peek
outdoors and went back for another week of hibernation.
Rob MacAlpine designed the clock-wise course, and most regarded it as fun albeit tasking
in a few spots. PJ Corrales lovingly referred to it as a “pinching” design. He with Nissan
Panda of uber-wide fiberglass hips would surely know.
Both the layout, it being the season opener, and 23 Novices led to a tally of over 170
DNF’s covering a 5-run day. A quick look places a chunk of those at the ST-based and RTA
classes. Perhaps their mindset was having them still plowing around in some snow-covered
parking lot…
Solo Airways
—continued from the previous page
Of the 152 registered entrants, 8 were left
with no recorded times, either struggling to
learn the basics or via mechanicalitis. Jeff
Seeger gets the top o’ the hat for starting
out the day but having to depart, missing
his runs, yet returning later in the day just to
help staff the club for duties here and there.
That is what volunteering and team work for
NER is all about.
My standard disclaimer applies: all times
reported are valid unless later updated on
the website due to a triple quadruple audit
request or someone reports an error that
doesn’t make sense. Remorse about your
own lack of focus, concentration or just plain
ol’ crappy driving at any Solo event is not
cause for audit or correction to boost you
up, so get some sleep the night before! Oft’
said by this reporter to the young at heart:
“We learn by doing.”
Let’s go take the class tour: Pro had 16
entries, and saw Nick Barbato take the
pax-based class by a solid 0.834 over
second place in his BS Honda S2000 CR.
His last, raw time run of 56.068, netted that
finish and first place in Pax, too. Nicks time
factored to a 47.377. By the way, the Top
Ten Pax times all came out of the Pro ranks.
Billy Davis in the ES Miata was on the fence
(the wrong fence it seemed) for his first 4
runs, but wailed to a Pro second spot on a
58.226/48.211. Ben Wagstaff was third
on his STS Miata run of 58.543/48.532,
Todd Kean in the ES Miata was fourth with an
early second run 58.685/48.591, and Grant
Reeve, fifth, in the Z06 Corvette. Grant took
the GoVette to a third run 56.586, factored
to a 48.607. Of note is a bunch of the Pro
drivers coning their last runs, and for some,
the last two runs of the day.
The Pax-based Novice class had 23 drivers,
with a handful of new Scion FR-S and Subaru
BRZ’s on site to mix and match. Michael
Sherman took his GS Volvo S60R to top
Rookie on a fifth and final run of 68.007
(factored to 55.493), a full 2 seconds on the
others. Jason Capracotta was second in a
STC Nissan 240SX, with a 69.989/57.670.
Jason may not have noticed, but we did see
the G-Fab family eyeing it for possible donor
parts as the day progressed. Jeremy Bourassa
was third with a Honda S2000 powered
68.941/58.255, Brady Horrance fourth with
a Focused 72.868/58.585 and rounding
out the Top 5 in Novice was Joe Ferreira in a
new Subaru BRZ with a 71.201/59.381.
Joshua Homen in his Scion FR-S came within
0.025 seconds (on pax) of the last trophy
spot with last run 71.357/59.511, but just
a whisker short of Bill Bither in his Audi S4.
Bill ran a 70.398/59.486, also on his final
pass. Interesting is that valid (non-DNF runs)
cone calls for Novices were light at 31, but
they were tagged 33 DNF’s overall. But to be
honest, I remember my first autocross too…Four
of the rookie drivers staked their best runs but
“with cone”, and that is something those drivers
need to focus on, as the added penalty kept 3
of them out of the Novice trophies. Ouch.
The Road Tire classes are also Pax-class based,
and are filling up with those debating tires vs.
cost vs. time divided by what “better” road tire
is out there vs. “that competitive urge”. RTR
(rear) saw 13 drivers and Darius Trinka took
the Nissan 350z to a last run 63.022/52.560.
He needed that, as it was his only clean run
of the day. Stephen Tise was second in the
Ford Shelby GT on a 63.782/52.939, just
under a fourth of a sec on pax. RTF (front) saw
Patrick Huxley hot-wheel the Honda Civic to a
63.501/51.054, easily dispatching the rest of
the 10 driver field.
RTA (all-wheel) was led by Andrew Barrette in
the Subaru WRX, taking a last run 62.034,
paxing to a 51.240. Andrew’s run was
nearly a full second on pax over Ken Johnson
in a Civic Si. Ken took a 63.218/52.218.
Honorable mention in RTA goes to Connor
O’Farrell, who negotiated the course with a
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, taking third in a
63.887/52.770.
The Kart classes were but 2: FJA and FJB.
Kimsoo Gopnik took the lone driver FJB class
with a 76.620, and Evan Woodsom led FJA
on his fourth run 68.398. Adam Woodsom
was second (79.560), Jessica Arsenault third
(81.071) and Jacob Arsenault, fourth (88.136).
3 cars ran in SMF, taken by Dan Durusky in the
Volkswagen GTi with a last pass 65.473. Street
Mod also had 3 cars, led by Eric Heinrich
in the BMW 325i on a 59.415. STF went to
Tom Soja (MINI – 68.836), STC to Robert
Pellerin (Impreza RS – 67.099) and STS to Bill
Brundige (Miata – 61.034). STR was 0.052
close for the top spot, with Mark Dudek taking
a BMW Z4 to a 60.772 over Matt Thompson
in the MX-5 Miata and a 60.824. Of note in
the class was Don Kuehl who auditioned his
hyper- Honda CRX in the morphed form of a
older silverish Miata (matching his greyish hair,
perhaps). I think Don still enjoyed the day in
spite of being the class “tail end Charlie.”
The 7 driver STX class was led by Mazda
RX-8 power and Jeff Anderson with a last pass
60.270. STU’s 3 driver field went to Bryan
Mancuso in the Lancer Evo, pulling a fourth
run 59.794. Top Raw went to the Top A-Mod
driver, Bill Gendron in the CK Dragon. Bill went
to a 51.848 on his final and fourth run before
retiring the car for co-driver and owner, Bob
Barone. ASP went to Matt Mickle, while CSP,
DSP and FSP were lone entries. ESP went to
Tom Powderly and his Ford Mustang Shelby
GT.
Ceeee-P went to Phil Mackaronis (Camaro
- 61.751) and XP to Brian Kuehl (Miata –
60.896). EP had Brian Levesque take the 5
driver Prepared class on a 56.930. The Stocker
ranks saw single entries for SS, AS, CS and
FS, but there were 5 drivers recorded in BS.
Tim Kong took that class on a Honda SR2000
CR run of 59.229, and gets a “thumbs up”
for the yellow-green color of his wheels and
near-matching numbers and letters. (Don’t get
me started on the Novice numbering reminders
just yet…) Chang Ho Kim and Jeff Martynuska
shared Jeff’s “which was once Chang’s”
Corvette, battling along with Barbara Seeger
and Carolyn Green.
DS held sway to 4 drivers, with Wiley Cox at
top with a MINI Cooper S run of 62.156. HS
had 2 drivers, Paul Zahornasky and Charlie
Thompson. Charles took his MINI Cooper to
a 65.585, but PZ had only 4 runs on the day,
unfortunately finding his Mazda 3 ‘de boot
on ‘de axle was much more worse than wear.
Charlie is running a JCW “Lite” version of a
MINI this year, and who better to compete
against than Mr “PZ”. The competition between
then should be awesome to watch this year.
GS saw Allen Parker take the venerable
(vulnerable) vintage Honda CRX to a win
with a 65.339 over Sam Creasey (by just
0.117), Paul Krysiak and Jack Nguyen. The
ol’ autocross veteran from New Hampshire is
eating his Wheaties it seems…
For SSM, Patrick Heck took his Lotus Elise to
a win in the 6 driver class. Taking a last run
58.601, he was a clear 2 seconds ahead
of the field. I need not mention to Gus, as he
knows it well, he just has to repeat that for the
next event. He keeps a very good log of his
modifications and progress on his website,
so keep at it. For the outsourcing department
fanatics, the G-Fab Panda saw a breakdown
of its axle components on the day, causing
some co-drive shuffling for the Pro drivers, and
no doubt a trip by PJ later in the week to some
classified heat-treat shop or NASA parts bin for
stiffer drive gear stuff for the next event.
The day ended with everyone bundled in winter
coats, the “sizing” worn off plenty of new tires,
Kimsoo selling cookies for charity at the trailer,
short memories yet tall tales, welcome new
companions, hello old friends. Winter may be
harsh, and Devens a task-master, but it can’t
beat the warmth of the NER Solo community.
Moore Airfield – Sunday. The NER Solo Points Event #2 launched at Devens with the moniker
“Cinco de Mayo”. Now, some may say that’s short for mayonnaise, and after a lengthy
timing and computer failure in mid-day that had the course workers feeling that’s what they
were - a bit oozy baking in the sunshine - it none the less means the 5 th of May is here and
the go-go-go of autocrossing across the country is in full swing.
It hadn’t been much of a warm past month or so; a few decent days here and there, but mostly
raw and cool. Today was probably the second weekend in 2 months that could go to the high
70’s with abundant sunshine, and run with that combination we did. The 139 entrants had
dropped to 137 for the actual start, and only 16 Novices were here to make note of. Did the
bright orb in the sky scare the young-in’s away
The sunshine brought out a few Hawaiian-style shirts, notably one on tall-dude Brian Levesque,
whose yellow, green and orange motorcycle and palm tree motif shirt, when he sat in the
ol’ family B-Mod (now operated by the Van De Carr’s), seemingly rose high into the near
stratosphere in bright contrast to the powder blue and silver Formula racer.
5 runs were logged into the archives for the event. The course was perhaps just a tad friendlier
for smaller cars or those with modest power curves, and some “power-cars” were really
finessing the throttle in spots or left hungry at others. The clockwise
attack around the airfield ended with a clever left twitch just
aft of the finish-lights that caught a few off-guard (remember to
always ‘look ahead’) with the resultant car-askew digital image
captured for prosperity and for all the world to see on Flickr. Let’s
get started:
Super Stock fielded 2 drivers, and Russ Siggelkoe shook his Lotus
Elise to a 56.903, a good turn ahead of Stephanie Zadrozny
in the Corvette Z06 and her 58.577. Five drivers played in
B-Stock, taken by Tim Kong in the Honda S2000 on a 56.612,
paxing overall in tenth. Bud Collins led the
5-driver CS field on a Pontiac Solstice powered
57.223. Bud also earned eighth in Pax,
converted to a 47.724. He and Tim Kong were
the 2 drivers in the Pax Top Ten not competing
in the Pro ranks.
Wiley Cox won DS on a MINI S run of
59.650, and Sam Creasey won GS on a CRX
powered 62.238. H-Stock saw 3 drivers, with
Paul “PZ” Zahornasky in his Mazda 3 getting
the best of Charlie Thompson and the MINI
today, 60.703 to 61.021. Mathieu Bruneaux
in the Saturn Aura was third. Single entry
classes included FS, XP, FP, STC and STS for the
event.
ASP went to Matt Mickle (Subaru STi - 56.083),
CSP to Rob MacAlpine (Miata - 58.063), DSP
to Nathan Draper (BMW 330ci - 61.686) and
ESP to Thomas Powderly in his Shelby Mustang
GT on a 61.914. CP was a 3 car field, with
Phil Mackaronis in the Chevy Camaro taking a
last run 59.851. Arnold Beebe in his Mustang,
forever sporting the 4 “most honkin’ tires you
will ever see sticking outside of a fender-well”
was second, with Nick Murphy, also Mustang
powered, third.
EP was taken by Brian Levesque in his Honda
CRX with a 56.463, leading the 4 driver field.
The noteworthy item was Daryl Beck and Jason
Fair, teaming up and introducing yet a different
vintage Volkswagen that has been added to
their collection. This, a not too common Jetta,
was sporting a light tan color reminiscent of
egg shells and had its suspension cobbled
together in the wee hours of the night before.
I will venture that if you know of an old Jetta,
especially in GTi or diesel attire, that needs a
good home, see those two guys as they may
have an interest...“Look Daryl, PARTS CAR!””
4 drivers took to the course in A-Mod, led
by Bill Gendron in the CK Dragon, now with
100% functional pedal cables. Bill ran a
48.896, topping Bill Goodale, Stacey Strout
and Bob Barone. Bill was also Fast Time of the
Day. Charlie Levesque’s vintage B-Mod was on
hand, with Dean and Greg Van De Carr now
at the helm. Greg ran a best 54.747 in the
Winkelman.
Street Touring had some decent action across
the ranks. James Daugherty took the 3-car
STF class on a last run 66.049 in the Mazda
Demio, regulating Chris Brooks to second,
who couldn’t improve on a third run 66.5. Don
Kuehl took STR in the Miata with a 61.720,
sharing the seat with co-driver Joanne Ago. STX
had 8 drivers and Jeff Anderson again took top
honors with a Mazda RX-8 pass of 57.847 on
his third and only clean shot of the day. Codriver
David Thomas was 0.329 back with a
58.206.
Bryan Mancuso cleanly took STU, and I say
cleanly in that it was his only clean (and last)
run of the day. SM (Street Mod) went to a
Subaru STi and Bill Haley, running a 64.286
best over the 3–driver class. Dan Durusky and
the VW GTi had 2 seconds on the 3-car SMF
field with a third run pass of 62.768.
SSM was 9 drivers deep, and saw Jenna
Corrales use Panda-power to steer the Nissan
240SX to a 57.580, although she almost had
the class from her second run of a 58.8. Matt
Nieman in the Miata was second with a last
run blast of 58.613, and David Olivera in the
Lotus Elise, third on a 59.384. Shout-out to
Mitsubishi Evo driver Eduard Gukasov, simply
because his name is spelled ‘Eduard’.
In the karting classes, Adult Kart had Sarah
Bowin as a single entry, going 54.350 on
her fourth run. Formula Junior A (FJA) had 4
entries, led by Evan Woodsom with a second
run 64.776. Jessica Arsenault was second
(70.610), Adam Woodsom third (71.554)
and Jacob Arsenault, fourth (80.764). FJB was
Kimsoo Gopnik, placing a 63.438 on her last
pass.
In Pax-based classes, RTF’s Patrick Huxley
handily drove his Honda Civic to a 62.245
in the 8-driver field, paxing to a 50.045. RTR
went to Josh Brockman, using Honda S2000
power to run a 60.323 / 50.972 over 9
other drivers. Stephen Tise was second in the
Mustang Shelby GT (61.703 / 51.213). RTA
was 4 entries, and saw Daniel Podolski take his
Volkswagen R32 to a last run 64.867, with a
pax of 53.580.
Pro had 13 entries, and notably absent was
Nick Barbato, who was poolside at some
Mediterranean resort, sipping Campari & soda,
strenuously practicing for an Aston Martin drive
at a race-track. Ah, tough job, but someone has
to do it…Pro seemed to share more cone calls
and DNF’s than normal this event: 42 cones
and 4 “excursions” of sorts, with Billy Davis
“...and, and this cone ... it just jumped right out in front
of me...” . Greg Van DeCar seems to express the what
gives moment about cone snagging. Photos: Eddie Savage
and Scott Thursby the only “Mr. Clean” pro drivers all day. Billy took the CSP Mazda Miata to
a fourth run 53.898, Paxed to a 46.406. Ben Wagstaff was second, also Miata powered but
in STS, on a fourth run 56.179 (46.572), just 0.166 off.
Credit goes to Nick who later mentioned on the NER forums that he spotted Ben’s sponsor
slogan of the event: “Its easier to staple Jello to a tree than win PRO w/ STS PAX!” I’d have
spotted Ben a tenth of a second for the quality of that ditty, but sorry Ben, you’d still have
wound up in Second Place. Third in Pro went to PJ Corrales (54.026 / 46.840), fourth to
Scott Thursby, and fifth to Todd Kean. Both Todd and JoJo Corrales, now JoJo Corrales-Kean,
proudly sported a “Just Married” decal on the back of JoJo’s MINI, so congratulations to both
of you!
Novice notez of the day have Nik Finn taking the top Rookie of the event with a Mazda
Miata. Nick went 64.521, paxed to a 53.423, almost 2 seconds on pax over Joe Ferreira
in the Subaru BRZ. Joe wheeled the CS-classed BRZ to a 66.387, on a pax of 55.366. Scion
FR-S powered Joshua Homen to third (67.276 / 56.108), a Subaru legacy took Craig Clark
to fourth (69.789 / 56.110), and Alan Salnikov used another FR-S to run 68.307 / 56.968.
Starter Bud Collins and Arnold Beebe in his c-prepared bigtired
mustang.
The “Hmmm, I should re-think that approach” to rookie Kevin Flanagan in the Nissan 240SX,
who did a really hot spin coming into the finish, having a few cones wedge and take away
a corner of his fiberglass front air-damn as a sort of pay-back. I thought I heard him say
afterwards: “Awww, it was loose anyway”. One can wonder if that meant the car or the
panel. Kevin ran a best 71.313.
Honorable mention goes to rookie Brian Lohnes, driving his 1987 Chevy Caprice with SM
classification. Brian wheeled his full size sedan to a respectable 71.389 (pax of 61.894).
Brian has the distinction of being able to say: “I can put 3 Miata’s in my trunk and still have
room to spare.”
Novice cone calls were but 26 or so (not too bad), but there were 17 DNF’s, so there is a bit
of work that some of you need to “focus on”. Remember, we have instructors; USE them. Of
note in Novice was how many instructors “really needed” to instruct driver Bill Morton, as Bill
drive in with his Mahogany Porsche Panamera 4. C’mon, you know who you are, so‘fess
up…Bill ended the day with a best of 85.189 plus 1, and earned his first cone-kill stripe for
the sports sedan.
Don’ t underestimate this big ol’ Caprice... remember how
many used to be on the road with State Trooper markings.
They knew something that Brian Lohnes knows... its a real
Q-ship..
We all may ponder and sometimes think of our autocrossing friends as living some sort of
common, day-to-day existence of a regular persons life, much like our very own. Maybe
some do, maybe some don’t. For me, I’m no one special in the grand scheme of things. But
sometimes an individual gets handed, or thrust into, a situation where your character gets a
surprise exam by the Great Architect above, your backbone gets tasked to a breaking point,
or your very human skills are tested to an extra-ordinary limit.
That happened to Josh Parker back on May 1 st , when he and 2 of his co-workers, David
Sampson and Jose Palacoios, simply doing their day-to-day job working on a driveway in
Nashua, New Hampshire, heard a crash from around the corner. They had the sense to take
a look. Seeing a minivan around a tree, a fire starting beneath it, they also saw and heard a
woman trapped inside.
Noubar Tebelekian competes in SSM in his 86’ BMW 325.
In the Buckaroo Banzai movie, there was a line: “Character is what you are in the dark”
(originally excerpted from American evangelist, Dwight Moody from the mid-1800’s), but
character is also what you are in the day. The 3 men did something that showed what
“character” really means: they ran toward the wreck and helped, pulling the woman to safety.
On May 17 th , the Nashua Fire Department honored Josh, David and Jose with their
departments annual “Citizen Life Saving Award”. I don’t think I need to say anything else,
except, “Well done.”
And with that, I’ll close out for event #2 with a quick question: What do you get when you
mix Cinco de Mayo and Subaru anti-freeze Answer: You get your mess mentioned in Pit
Talk! Soooo, drivers, always check your fluid levels, radiators, connections and thermostats,
or you too, will be an inductee into the NER Solo “kitty-litter klub”…
Be seeing you!
the wheel turned to the left, the string is
pulled up taut from its neutral position
and won’t stretch, keeping you from
depressing the gas pedal. To do so, you
need to smoothly release some of that
steering input so you can push the pedal
(and pull the string) downward. Likewise,
you’ll need to give up some force at the
gas or brake pedal to pull the string up
with some steering. Stretching or snapping
the string would be the same as bounding
outside the friction circle.
By the time we’ve finished the corner at
the track-out point, we’re back to straightline
driving and at full throttle, though
most likely not at 2g (there aren’t really
cars capable of that). The reality is most
sports cars’ abilities map out to a “friction
egg”, with stellar braking, great steering,
and good acceleration capabilities. Still,
it’s a shape with a nice smooth profile,
and one that must be respected at the high
speed limits.
As with anything in the world of racing,
a few paragraphs here won’t go deep
enough into the theory. But also, as with
anything in the world itself, practice and
rehearsal will help keep concepts like
these at the forefront of your focus, while
not causing you to overthink every move.
This is a good thing, because we’re surely
close to the next corner by this point! Tell
yourself at every turn-in; “Don’t tread too
far outside that circle…” “
Board of Directors Meeting Minutes — April 10, 2013
The Board of Directors met at the Hampton
Inn Auburn, 736 Southbridge Street,
Auburn, MA.
Present were Regional Executive Paul
Zahornasky, Assistant Regional Executive
Brian Mushnick, and Directors,Trevor
Hermance, Bill Gendron, Elizabeth
Winiarz, Chris Regan,.Sterling Cole, Doug
Fisher, Doug Myers,,and Wiley Cox. Also
in attendance were Area One Director Dick
Patullo, Jessie Honigs, Eric Heinrich, Solo
Chairperson Bob Davis, Marc Monnar, Paul
Krysiak, and Jerry Rigoli.
These minutes may not be in chronological
order.
The meeting was called to order by Paul
Zahornasky at 7:30 PM.
After review by Directors, a motion was
made to accept the minutes of the February
12th,2013 meeting. (Fisher/Gendron)
PASSED
Attendees of the NeDiv Roundtable meeting
gave a summary of the events there.
Dates for the remainder of the board
meetings before the next annual meeting
were set. The dates are as follows:
Second Wednesday night of each month
excepting July, 7:30 PM, Auburn
There was further debriefing on
the National Convention and the
communications and program improvements
explained there by SCCA staff.
Lou Gingerella is working on the 2012 tax
filing. He may need a replacement in the
foreseeable future as his personal business
has greatly increased.
Paul Zahornasky will be getting a job
description from him so that a new person
can be sought.
A discussion took place on whether
any bookkeeping activity should be
compensated for the sake of securing a
person who would be more permanent.
26 PIT TALK
Club Racing’s contracts are progressing;
NHMS signed, LRP waiting after first event.
Season opener pre-registration has
been sluggish. Supply trailer inventories
have been checked. Flagging and
Communications held a pre-season meeting.
RallyCross had some successful events (Slip
& Slide, Test & Tune). Frost Heaves Road
Rally went well.
Registering the new truck has been a
headache (Insurance, Registration to
inactive [in NH] organization listing).
Solo had their first event this past weekend.
There continues to be a struggle to a void
binding up the event with large numbers
of entries (especially novices) vs. a desired
minimum number of runs.
Membership at the beginning of March was
2212; it is currently 2246. A motion was
made to transfer $67 from the General/
Marketing account to Merchandise for the
production of key members’ business cards.
(Fisher/Myers ) PASSED
Trevor Hermance provided an update on
the promotional activities performed at
regional racing and car shows, including
two in the Springfield, MA area. As Paul
Zahornasky’s efforts in this area will
somewhat be diverted to his work as R.E.,
the board was reminded to watch for
members who would be great ambassadors
for NER and would be able to contribute
time to publicity and marketing for/of our
club and its events.
A motion was made to accept the program
reports as delivered (Regan/Gendron)
PASSED
Palmer Motorsports Park’s latest permitting
(for an altered entranceway) has been
completed by Fred Ferguson and his
associates.
There was a discussion on finishing website
improvements paid for in 2011. Full implementation
has not occurred, perhaps
due to the volunteer nature of the site’s
administration. A new web host was
recommended so that a new consultant
can be hired to better serve our region’s
officials, members and participants/
customers.
Google Apps enterprise was suggested
for region e-mail accounts, etc. The board
anticipates having cost estimates at the next
meeting to guide in decision-making.
Fairfield County Sports Car Club desires
a Street Survival-type curriculum. It was
proposed that we get involved to hold a
program together (in Stratford, CT, perhaps
late 2013).
The board authorized Bill Gendron to
pursue this project and he will work out a
budget to present at the next meeting.
Board members’ goals for the season
were discussed. Sterling Cole will work to
coordinate website and communications
improvements. Trevor Hermance and Doug
Myers are collaborating on the PDX/Time
Trials program startup and will have a
proposed budget and event layout at the
next meeting for execution at the June Lime
Rock event.
Brian Mushnick will work to develop
comprehensive plans for “cohesive
communication” among and between our
programs, and directors familiar with the
Club Racing program will identify and
promote an eventual successor to Club
Racing chairperson Jerry Rigoli who wishes
to step down after years of service.
A motion was made at 9:50 to begin an
executive session amongst the Directors,
then not to return to open meeting (Cole/
Fisher) PASSED
Respectfully submitted,
Trevor Alexander Hermance, Secretary
Next meeting will be held on Wednesday,
May 8, 2013 at the Hampton Inn Auburn,
Auburn, MA at 7:30 PM.
