Artevation
by Alice Harrill
What happens when you mix art
and historic preservation Art +
Preservation = Artevation, an art
show depicting historic places
and properties in Charlotte.
Historic Charlotte presents
Artevation during the month of
May at Queens Art Gallery in
Plaza Midwood. The art show
is part of National Historic
Preservation Month.
Not-to-be-missed events include
the gallery opening on Friday,
May 9 at 7 and a special joint
meeting of Historic Charlotte’s
learning series and the Civic by
Design Forum on Tuesday, May
13 at 5:30. The exhibit may
be viewed any time during the
month at Queens Gallery.
This year’s Artevation is a
tribute to the life and works
of the late Warren Burgess,
influential city planner,
urban designer, and artist
who worked 21 years for
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Planning Commission and
then five years for the Town
of Davidson. Burgess worked
with neighborhoods to draw
plans for the future. He was a
man of kindness and generosity
who had the distinct honor
of being respected by both
neighborhood activists and
developers alike. He was
responsible for many of the
changes that Dilworth has seen
in the past twenty years. His
work on the revitalization of the
South Boulevard corridor has
just recently come to fruition.
Burgess could often be seen in
Dilworth making sketches of
historic buildings and streets.
Many of his drawings, including
many of our neighborhood, will
be on display at the art show.
Look for the thin man with a
hat and cane in many of the
pictures. That’s Warren Burgess.
At least eight other local
artists will display their works
of Charlotte architecture
and history at Artevation.
Their photography, fabric
art, paintings, woodcuts, and
illustrations will be featured
along with the architectural
drawings of Warren Burgess.
Many of the works will be
available for purchase with a
percentage of the proceeds
going to Historic Charlotte, Inc.
Local art on display includes
the whimsical folk art of Wendy
Arundel, the mixed-media folk
art of Paw Creek by Nellie
Ashford, photographs by Light
Factory founder Byron Baldwin,
David French’s oil paintings that
document historic changes in
Charlotte, commercial photos
of Charlotte by Diane Davis,
pencil and watercolor drawings
of historic landmarks by John
Howard, woodcuts of North
Davidson by Jim Sack, and
fabric quilts by Dilworth’s own
Deborah Langsam.
