Introduction & Contents
Introduction
Welcome to Music in St Andrews, a new biannual publication from the Music Centre which
brings together details of all the musical events planned by the University for the semester,
and many organised by other groups too. It is a measure of the richness of the musical
life in this small town that such a substantial publication can be produced, detailing more
than eighty events between now and Christmas. We hope that you enjoy browsing this
information in this new format: I, Chris Bragg (our Concerts Administrator, who has compiled
Music in St Andrews), or any of our colleagues listed at the back of the booklet will be very
pleased to have your views and feedback.
As you will see, there is a huge variety of events on offer, promoted by University, professional and community groups,
performing numerous different styles of music in a wide range of venues. The latter include, in addition to the Younger
Hall and our two beautiful medieval chapels, the Byre Theatre, whose wonderfully designed spaces we look forward to
developing as venues for music as well as drama in the coming years, as the University works with the local community to
bring the Byre back to its rightful place at the heart of the cultural life of St Andrews.
On behalf of all the Music Centre’s staff, I wish you happy concert-going and look forward to seeing you at many of the
events listed in these pages.
Bach – Sonata in E major, BWV 1035
Poulenc – Sonata for oboe and piano
Schumann – Fantasiestücke for oboe d’amore and piano
Pasculli – Ricordo di Napoli (scherzo brillante) for oboe and piano
Join Scottish Chamber Orchestra oboe soloist Rosie
Staniforth for a recital celebrating the sparkling virtuosity
and heartfelt soulfulness of her instrument. Bach’s vivid
Sonata in E, BWV 1035, contrasts bustling fast movements
with touching slower evocations, and Poulenc’s lyrical
1962 Oboe Sonata, full of French sophistication, stretches
the player to the limit. Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, which
Rosie performs on a lower-pitched oboe d’amore, are Rosie Staniforth
songful evocations of love and landscape, and she
concludes with the breathtaking fireworks and fun of the extraordinarily virtuosic
Ricordo di Napoli, by Italian oboist and showman Antonio Pasculli.
