Lehigh Valley Regional CompeKKon <br />
• Various <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>School</strong>s in the Greater Lehigh Valley (32-‐40 <br />
different schools) compete. MATHCOUNTS promotes criKcal <br />
thinking and problem solving skills. The compeKKon has a <br />
wriXen and oral round as well as individual and team <br />
components. <br />

Spelling Bee <br />
Led by Ms. Loni Weller, Director of Media Services <br />
• Spelling Bee acKvity period is an excellent opportunity for students to train <br />
and compete for the chance to represent <strong>Moravian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in the Scripps <br />
NaKonal Spelling Bee. ParKcipants prepared for the compeKKon by learning <br />
recommended word lists, focusing on the key components of major language <br />
groups and parKcipaKng in a pracKce bee each week of the acKvity period. <br />
• For two out of the past four years, <strong>Moravian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> students have placed first in <br />
the regional spelling compeKKon and have earned a spot to compete on a <br />
naKonal level in Washington, DC. The winners were among 273 of the country’s <br />
top spellers.

Geography Bee <br />
Led by Mr. Richard Dow, 8 th Grade Social Studies Teacher <br />
• The <strong>Moravian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> Geography Bee normally is <br />
held in November or December. ParKcipants in grades <br />
sixth through eighth grade compete in the school <br />
compeKKon. They are required to answer quesKons <br />
from a preliminary qualifying packet. The student that <br />
answers the most correct quesKons is the school <br />
winner. A medal is presented to the winner. <br />
• For four out of the last five years, a <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>School</strong> <br />
student has qualified for the state compeKKon by <br />
passing a wriXen test.
Le Grand Concours, The NaKonal French Contest <br />
Led by French Teacher, Mrs. Bonnie Wismer. <br />
• A NaKonal compeKKon in which students are evaluated for their wriXen, oral and listening <br />
comprehension skills in French. <br />
2013 – Level 01 – 7 th graders placed first and second in the Lehigh Valley and 5 th naKonally <br />
Level 1 -‐ 8 th grader placed first in the Lehigh Valley and 5 th naKonally <br />
2012 – Level 01 – 9 students parKcipated and 6 placed within the top 10 in the Lehigh Valley – two placed in the top naKonally <br />
