<strong>Research</strong> <strong>Interests</strong><br />

During the past years at Oxford University I have focused my research along three<br />

main directions: (i) the understanding of the equation of state (EOS) of highly<br />

compressed matter, as found in interior or giant planets and in the crust of old stars,<br />

as well as in inertial fusion energy experiments; (ii) the development of novel<br />

experimental techniques to simulate cosmological shock waves in the laboratory; and<br />

(iii) the possibility of using a combination of different light sources such as ultraintense<br />

lasers and free electron lasers to experimentally test the coupling of gravity<br />

and quantum mechanics. I have been leading the x-ray scattering work to study the<br />

microscopic properties of warm dense matter, and in particular I have been using<br />

such techniques to look at the atomic correlations arising in warm dense hydrogen,<br />

lithium and carbon. We have also measured, for the first time, self-generated<br />

magnetic fields in laboratory shocks and related them to proto-galactic structure<br />

formation. Our group is internationally regarded as one of the major player in the<br />

field. Through my secondment at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the<br />

participation in the HiPER program (the EU proposal for a fusion laser facility) I have<br />

been active in the inertial confinement fusion community and put forward the work on<br />

the hydrogen EOS. So far, most of the experimental work has been conducted at<br />

large scale facilities (both nationally and oversea). In the near term, I plan to fully<br />

commission a small-scale laser laboratory here in Oxford to carry on basic research<br />

– especially on points (i) and (ii) above – in order to provide the necessary<br />

preparation and readiness for the limited access at large-scale laser facilities. <strong>The</strong><br />

work on EOS/Fusion energy and laboratory astrophysics has been funded by<br />

research grants from the UK <strong>Research</strong> Councils and the European <strong>Research</strong><br />

Council, as well as collaborations with AWE plc. and the Lawrence Livermore<br />

National Laboratory (US).<br />
