The <strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Equestrian</strong> Team<br />

competition and program supports, challenges, and<br />

offers recognition to the dedicated teenagers who<br />

both physically and mentally pursue the sport of<br />

equ<strong>in</strong>e competition. This program will help<br />

students develop lifetime skills, teamwork, and<br />

self-discipl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The program was formed <strong>in</strong> 1993, <strong>in</strong> Southern<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong>. Now as a statewide program, it runs<br />

throughout high schools as a w<strong>in</strong>ter/spr<strong>in</strong>g sport<br />

with three ma<strong>in</strong> competitions, two of which the<br />

athlete must compete <strong>in</strong> to be eligible for the state<br />

championship competition. Those athletes who are<br />

eligible and qualify at their district meets may<br />

compete at the state championship meet aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

competition from all districts.<br />

Athletic or activity letters may be awarded to<br />

athletes meet<strong>in</strong>g the letter<strong>in</strong>g requirements.<br />

Each athlete pays a participation fee to his/her<br />

district to cover the costs of competitions, hir<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

officials, <strong>in</strong>surance, etc. All other costs of<br />

transportation, stalls, equipment, team shirts and<br />

lodg<strong>in</strong>g are the responsibility of each athlete.<br />

Teams are encouraged to hold fundraisers to offset<br />

expenses.<br />

Students are encouraged to organize their school<br />

equestrian team at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the school<br />

year <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative approval,<br />

canvas their school for members, hold regular<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs, organize fundraisers, and design and<br />

order their team shirt, before competitions beg<strong>in</strong>.<br />
