THE WATROUS MANITOU MONDAY, MAY 10, 2010 • 13 Manitou Beach Sue Alcock By Daniel Bushman TWM When people hear about Communities in Bloom, planting and growing flowers could come immediately to mind. According to chair of Manitou Beach Communities in Bloom Elaine Muzichuk, however, “We are more than just flowers.” In fact, Manitou Beach CIB is ramping up for another year and has a checklist of eight categories they look at trying to follow: natural and architecture heritage conservation, landscaped areas, tidiness effort, environmental awareness, community involvement and civic pride, urban forestry, floral displays, and turf and ground cover areas. At their weekly Wednesday gathering, member Helen Johnson said the group chose to enter into the non-competitive category again this year, the second time of their five years in existence. Muzichuk said it would be a tall order to become competitive this year, given the amount of improvements that would have to be done and the fact that by having a smaller group, “It is tough to reach the levels we would like to.” Being non-competitive is not a bad thing as she said it is a “great community builder and we are encouraging members of the community to participate.” The group is hoping to continue to make the resort village beautiful and to improve it each year with ongoing projects. We want to have a good first impression” for those who come and visit. Muzichuk had some goals laid out at a recent meeting: CIB wants “to continue the beautification of Manitou Beach . . . to involve community members, council and employees of Manitou Beach and businesses to enhance Manitou Beach for residents and visitors alike.” Projects lined up for the season include plaque unveilings that mark and honour the heritage at the beach. The group collaborates with Interlake to produce the plaques and recently unveiled their fifth, this one commemorating the Church of the Holy Spirit. The tree nursery, located by the regional park campground, has been nurtured for the past three years and this season, a number of seedlings will be moved to Wellington Park. The trees, which will be strategically placed, are part of about 300 in the nursery. Muzichuk said people who would like a tree for themselves can acquire one by giving a donation to CIB. Another fundraiser taking place is park benches. Right now, five benches have been purchased and contain an ‘in memory of ’ message. The benches can then be placed where the buyer would like them in and around the resort village. The volunteer organization, which is made up of chair Elaine Muzichuk, secretary Jackie Gross, treasurer Verna Painchaud and co-treasurer Judy Kochylema, also includes the community. “All residents at Manitou Beach are members as well.” Painchaud said, “We encourage all new people to come out and lend a hand.” Over the coming months planters will be put out, cleaning, weeding and a street walk will all take place, while their t-shirts will again be for sale. The women all agreed that if everyone did their part, big or small, the village could be an even better place to visit. “Even people looking after their own yard. That is valued just as much,” Painchaud said. THICKER. BETTER. SPRAYED-ON TRUCK BEDLINERS ArmorThane of Watrous rd 110 - 3 Avenue West, Watrous, SK 306-1st Ave. W., Watrous (306) 946-4141 Belated happy May Day, a holiday in Britain as well as the time of the ancient Beltaine Gaelic Festival, which marked the midpoint between the spring equinox and summer solstice as well as the beginning of the pastoral summer season when herds of livestock were put out to pasture. As part of the celebrations, fires were lit on hills and mountains of ritual and political significance and also May boughs were hung on the doors and windows of houses. In farm yards May bushes of rowan or whitethorn, decorated with ribbons, flowers and garlands were erected. There may have been human sacrifice too. The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar has altered the date of celebration. Whilst living in Edinburgh I walked with friends to the top of King Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano, for an ecumenical service commemorating May Day and remember it well because of the sleet and rain that made the celebration quite miserable! Nowadays the service is held on Carlton Hill, I suspect because it is larger and easier to get to. I am trying to ignore mentioning the rain and snow that is coming down as I write, but cannot. Condolences and sympathy are extended from our community to the family of Gordon Whetan who passed away Apr. 24 at the age of 89. Gordon has enjoyed many summers here at the family cabin. My hope is, that by the time this goes to press, the skimmers conflict between Dr. John-Mark Opondo, deputy medical health officer and Manitou Springs CEO Dwight Hayter will have been resolved and the pool open or very close to opening. I have various thoughts about the situation but have decided not to air them in public! Sunday, May 2, Manitou Beach Communities in Bloom (MBCIB) unveiled its latest historical plaque in the All Saints’ Parish Hall, Watrous. You will see the write up about the event elsewhere. Jason Harcourt is now operating The Diner and I understand that there will be changes made to the menu.
