Pool closure causes waves
By Daniel Bushman
TWM
A blow to the tourism industry sent ripples through Manitou
Beach, Watrous and even the province as word spread that Manitou
Springs Mineral Spa’s license to operate its pool was indefinitely
suspended.
As a result, the pool portion of the building has been temporarily
shut down and 24 employees laid off. Lifeguards, reception desk
and poolside cafe attendants, massage and aesthetics employees,
and maintenance and pool cleaning staff were told
to head home. Co-owner of the spa Dwight Hayter
was not impressed he had to make the move. “It is
extremely frustrating.”
In fact, the announcement made by the Saskatchewan
Department of Health at the end of
April caught Hayter by surprise.
“We are getting lots of backlash. People don’t
understand the whole problem. We have complied
with (the health region) and every demand . . . Getting
30 hours notice was a shocker. If we weren’t
working with them or someone got sick from the pool, then I could
see that.”
Deputy medical health officer for the Saskatoon Health Region
Dr. Johnmark Opondo said otherwise. “We have been working with
the operator of the spa for quite a while regarding some concerns
that their pool regulations are not in compliance.”
A probationary licence was first issued Feb. 12, 2008 - a year and
seven months before new management took over. The health region
“They fail to recognize that
there was new ownership in
September of ‘09. The health
region has not recognized
that at all and came down
on us extremely hard.”
– Manitou Springs
co-owner Dwight Hayter
hotel patrons and other visitors, the gift store and restaurant remain
open, with hopes the spa itself will soon follow.
–– photo submitted
said it provided the last probationary licence Mar. 15, 2010, hand
delivered to the current owner. That licence, which expired Apr. 30,
also contained the results of the provincial peer review of the facility
and the list of what needed to be done at the spa in order to keep
the licence. Opondo said the requirements the spa was supposed to
fulfill during the latest probationary period were not met, resulting
in the licence being suspended.
Hayter does not think the decision was a fair one. “They fail to
recognize that there was new ownership in September of ‘09. The
health region has not recognized that at all and
came down on us extremely hard.”
According to a release by the spa’s management,
a call was placed by the Saskatchewan Department
of Health to the spa at Manitou Beach
Apr. 29 alerting them of a potential closure. By 10
p.m. Apr. 30, the pool was ordered to shut down for
an undetermined length of time.
“The primary reason why the department of
health has decided to shut us down is due to the
following breach of the Public Health Act and the
swimming pool regulations, 1999, and the General Pool Design/
Operational Standards and the Swimming Pool Design/Operational
Standards: skimming devices should be capable of handling at
least 75 per cent of total filter rate.”
The company agreed that most of the skimmers on hand are
plugged with a hard encrustation, resulting from 23 years of min-
The big gig
Members of both Horizon Winds and the Garage bands travelled to Edmonton and Lloyminster, and performed a
total of four concerts during the 2010 version of the tour.
–– photo submitted
Band tour a big hit once again
submitted by Jaecy Bells, Watrous
The Horizon Winds was some of the few outside
in the sleet Saturday morning, May 1. The unseasonable
weather did not reveal it, but the fact was once
again it was time for the annual band tour. Students
from Watrous, Nokomis, Holdfast, Imperial, Simpson
and Dilke ‘banded’ together to create three excellent
groups.
The four-day trip started in Saskatoon, where Nick
Fanner taught a jazz clinic at a well-known club, the
Bassment. After this, band students Eric Schalm, Tracy
Sundquist, Sian Wall, William Lee, Steven Schalm, Josh
Amendt, Holly Hobman, Cory Bart, Jasmine Brooks,
Brooke Nickel, Dylan Wolff, Chantelle Hayter, Ethan
Van Vaals, Kelan Flavel, Kenton Otte, Ryan Perault,
Matthew Remlinger, Brodie Dunlop and Jaecy Bells,
chaperones Michelle Amendt, Beatrice Remlinger, Joanne
Gingrich, Lynnette Wall and band director Dave
McDade headed off to Edmonton.
One questionable ‘game of things’ later, the group
10053WW00
checked into a hotel. The next day’s plans were enjoyment.
At the West Edmonton Mall, some shopped, some
swam and some went to Galaxy Land. Everyone had a
great time. Monday morning meant that the musicians
had to face the music at an earlier hour than usual with
a 9 a.m. gig at an Edmonton elementary school.
The three-part performance included concert band,
garage band and jazz band. Concert band is a traditional
school band. Garage band is a new rock group started
this year at Winston High School. Finally, jazz music
was played by the last band. Everyone joined together
for the last song: electric guitar and bass, trumpets and
saxophones, vocals and keyboards played a version of
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird.
The bands played at two schools in Edmonton, then
drove to Lloydminster and checked in to another hotel.
The group hit the movie theatre and played the final
two gigs Tuesday. The busload of people returned home
that evening. The band tour of 2010 was a hit.
See coming events for details for their final concert.
Editorial and Opinion
Just Layzing Around
After a big story hits the news, it
doesn’t take long to see why many
people have such a negative view of
‘the media’.
Within hours of Manitou Springs
Mineral Spa’s loss of its license to
operate its pool, provincial radio and
television stations were broadcasting
the news.
Reasonably, I would be the last to
deny any of these outlets their right
to get the information to their viewers
and listeners, but could there be any
consideration taken regarding the
inflammatory quotes and unsubstantiated
comments made
I won’t even repeat deputy medical
health officer John-Mark Opondo’s
original stance, especially considering he did not seem to repeat his
earlier statement - or if he did, it wasn’t picked up by the provincial
media.
However, for a radio station like NewsTalk 650, for instance, to quote
Saskatoon resident Don Meister’s comments about “brown scum” and
foam just shows the station is looking to find anyone who is willing to
throw in their two-cents’ worth, regardless of the validity of the information.
Anyone who knows anything about Lake Manitou’s water has
seen the salty foam literally roll across the road during high winds.
And the colour of the water has always been and will always be a
greenish-brown. That’s what makes it one of the most unique lakes in
the world.
At least they finished by saying Meister has “never had any health
concerns.” Exactly. Perhaps that’s the real story.
brew cup, filled the reservoir
with water, set the pot under
the drip nozzle and turned it
on.
Not so now. There are
regular drip coffee makers
but you also have a choice of
espresso, press coffee makers
and a new kid on the block -
single cup brewers that use a
single serving pre-measured
package.
I am not much on trying
out new things, especially
when it comes to messing
with coffee. But, after
surveying the many options,
we settled on a Tassimo that
uses T-discs. These discs fit
into the slot, you put your
cup under the nozzle and
with the press of a button
you have enough coffee for
one cup. Nothing new about
that except these T-discs
come with many flavour options:
cappuccino, chai tea
latte, French vanilla coffee,
creme coffee and the regular,
normal everyday kind of coffee
too.
Who needs Tim’s or Starbucks
At first my number one
concern was where would I
buy refills The local grocery
store has ordinary coffee and
after a chat with the owner
it turns out she is willing
to bring in other flavours if
they will sell. Fair enough.
Neighbourly
News Peg by Hasein
Additionally, you can also
visit the company website and
order from there. There is also
a list of stores that sell the
refills. So, it seems there is no
danger in running out.
For adult Canadians, coffee
is the number one beverage:
81 per cent drink it occasionally
and 63 per cent drink it
on a daily basis.
Predominately a
morning beverage
(51 per cent is consumed
at breakfast),
Canadians
drink an average
of 2.6 cups per
day.
Compare that
with our southern
neighbours
with 49 per cent
who drink coffee daily. Must be
Tim’s influence.
For adult
Canadians, coffee
is the number one
beverage: 81
per cent drink it
occasionally and
63 per cent drink
it on a daily basis.
In North American, coffee
is a social beverage. One
acquaintance who hails from
England made that comment
the other day and I started
thinking about it. We go out
for coffee, we have friends in
for coffee, we visit over coffee.
North Americans also
prefer drip coffee whereas
down under in New Zealand
and Australia the norm is
pressed coffee. In fact, they
refer to coffee made in a drip
maker as “cowboy coffee.”
Hardened coffee drinkers
like to point out the health
benefits of coffee. They claim
it puts you in a better mood.
There may be some truth
to that as a study by Johns
Hopkins University found
that caffeine made people
more energetic, confident
and ready to work. That’s the
“buzz” anyway.
A study in Holland found
that coffee is good for your
memory. Great news for
boomers who grew up on
coffee and have now reached
the stage of their lives where
anything that improves their
memory is welcomed.
The new machine
is a hit in
our house. We
are working our
way through
the flavours
deciding which
ones we like.
Some we will
not purchase
again but I can
tell you the chai tea latte is
still my favourite.

McGregor Hone: a prairie printmaker
Watrous & Area Arts
Council is pleased to
present McGregor Hone: A
Prairie Printmaker.
Well-known Saskatchewan
artist McGregor Hone
(called Mac by friends and
family) was born in Prince
Albert in 1920. He graduated
with a degree in education
in 1941 and during the
war years worked as a welder
in the Vancouver shipyards.
In 1947, Mac Hone
became a high school art
teacher at Central Collegiate
in Regina and worked
there until his retirement
in 1979. He and his wife,
fellow Saskatchewan artist
Beth Hone, moved to Lumsden
in the late 1970s and set
up studios attached to their
geodesic-dome house. Mac
Hone was an important
member of the Saskatchewan
arts community. He
participated in many group
exhibitions, was a member
of the 1940s group of artists
known as The Prospectors
and attended the Emma
Lake Artists’ Workshops.
Hone worked in many artistic
media but for over
60 years he continued to
return to the medium of
printmaking. Mac Hone
passed away in 2007 and this
exhibition celebrates his
dedication to the medium
of printmaking.
History was made by some talented
students in the Prairie Spirit School Division
this year and they will be singing a
happy tune all the way to Ottawa.
The senior concert band from the east
part of the division earned the invitation
to the National Music Festival in the nation’s
capital after taking part in the provincial
festival in Regina.
Prairie Spirit School Division east
band program director Monika MacKenzie
said only a handful of bands from that
competition are able to go to nationals.
“It is fabulous and quite the accomplishment.
I have been teaching for 16 years
and haven’t known a lot of small rural
groups to be invited.”
For the division, this is the first time
in 11 years of the music program that
the group received a superior grade at
the provincial festival and essentially received
an invite to Musicfest Canada.
The band is made up of 48 students
from Gr. 8 to 12 who come from schools in
Aberdeen, Allan, Colonsay, Clavet, Hanley
and Viscount. MacKenzie said five
students come from Allan, two from Colonsay,
21 from Clavet and one from Viscount.
While Viscount is not part of the division,
the student taking part in the band
has familiar ties. “Her family used to live
in Allan. They don’t have a band program
in Viscount” so it is into the car and off
to practice.
Meanwhile, for the band members in
the division, the senior group meets Mon-
Band sticks
to the beat
and heads east
day nights in Clavet - a central location -
where they rehearse.
MacKenzie said they began tuning up
for the provincial festival before Christmas
and the nice part was the pieces
picked also worked for nationals.
The band flies out to Ottawa May 16 and
will return May 19. The first full day that
the crew is there, they will be performing
at Musicfest, which started in 1972 and
has grown to embrace the Canadian Stage
Band Festival, Canadian Choral Festival
and the Canadian Concert Band Festival.
The annual event brings together more
than 10,000 of the country’s best young
musicians who perform for recognition
as the country’s foremost musical ensembles.
Those invited can range from 12 to 25
years old and are drawn from elementary,
high school, college and university levels.
The group will play at the National
Arts Centre and then after their big day,
will take time to see the sites like Parliament
Hill and the war museum.
“It is an unique trip,” said MacKenzie
as the students not only get educational
value out of it but also get to take part in
the festival.
“There is a great group of parents that
have supported it. We basically had two
weeks to decide if we were going to go and
then get payment for the trip.”
MacKenzie said they also had strong
support from the division, communities,
businesses and individuals.
“I am proud of the kids; they have
worked so hard.”
Sports and Recreation
THE POINT
On your marks, Winston
High School’s track
and field gets set to take
off this week in Watrous.
Cross your fingers and
your toes that good
weather will prevail.
Much like last week,
snow decided to join the
athletes and teachers
last year as they tried
desperately to brave the
elements. It was a strange
sight, students trying
to compete in events in
their gear while wind and
snowflakes tried to ruin
the parade. It seems like it is always hit and miss with
track.
So, in an effort to secure better weather for the event,
the solution I have come up with is to hold it the same
time as the Watrous and Manitou Beach Fun Run Auto
Show and Shine.
Talk about perfect timing on organizer Jason
Lindgren’s part as he somehow manages to get perfect
picture days every year and knock on wood for that to
continue. While it obviously does not work to hold track
and field so late in the year after school is finished, it is
the best solution I could think of to avoid the crummy
weather.
For those who qualify at the meet, pre-districts will
take part May 18 and districts hit the track May 25.
Also getting into the swing of things is ball. There
are local teams competing in various age groups with
some in city leagues. Clubs will be playing games in
town and for the avid ball fan or supportive grandparent,
there is nothing like catching a game with a handful
of sunflower seeds during a nice evening.
Moving to the frozen pond, Halakamania ran wild
into the beginning of round two in the NHL playoffs.
The ‘Cinderella’ team of this year’s playoffs, the Montreal
Canadiens, just continue to keep ticking courtesy
of netminder Jaroslav Halak. However, Pittsburgh
tender Marc-Andre Fleury stole a page out of Halak’s
book in game three, stone-walling Montreal.
On the other side of the country, Vancouver also
came out of the gates flying but the ‘Hawks kept
Roberto Luongo and the team at bay in game two and
managed to claw back into the series. Both Canadian
series in the second round have been a roller coaster of
emotions for respective fans.
For me, my heart and my stress level have gotten
quite the break after the Flames were ousted before the
playoffs even began. In that regard it has been nice to
get some sleep at night, but I would take even less sleep
than I get now to see them in the playoffs. Like the saying
that has been all too familiar for other fans - namely
ones who put on the blue and white and the blue and
gold: there is always next year!
But I guess after the ‘Riders came oh so close, Team
Canada lost at the world juniors and Canada won gold
in the men’s hockey at the Olympics in thrilling fashion,
the break is probably a good thing.
Switching gears, I have to ask, would you consider
watersliding a sport
I sure do and got to enjoy one of my favourite pasttimes
a couple of weekends ago as we celebrated my
wife’s birthday. The last time I went watersliding was
quite a while ago, so I was eager to meet up with a ‘long
lost friend.’
That friend happens to ‘live’ at the Sheraton in Saskatoon.
It was definitely a good time and brought back
memories as a kid sliding down the waterslide with
precision and speed. Of course when we were younger
it was all about who could make it down the fastest
without getting pounded on and who could stay in the
pool the longest.
On one of the runs down, I caught up to my sister-inlaw
who, upon seeing this object hurling towards her,
screamed her head off. Needless to say, her head and my
knee met each other so after that, a cautious approach
was taken by one of us, at least briefly.
I first want to clarify for those reading who are involved
with waterslide supervision, I obeyed the rules,
at least to the best of my knowledge.
Alright, now that I settled that matter, once we
finished up I came back to the table to find my shirt had
taken a swim of its own. Of course, it was aided by my
sister-in-law Stephanie who felt it needed to be cleaned.
After she thought she had gotten the upper hand, we all
proceeded to leave for the night. Steph, not paying attention
to what was going on got a little ‘too close’ to the
edge of the pool and ‘somehow’ fell in, towel and all.
So for those of you who said no when I asked the
question of whether watersliding is a sport, I think I
may have made a case for it. An Olympic sport Prob-
Watrous recreation director Trevor Ouellette said
after some discussion, a new park is being constructed
to help accommodate families using the sportsgrounds.
So far, “we went over a few site proposals to see which
would be the best way to go. We have a preliminary
In a second round-robin
came out first. That put us
into the playoff structure
on Sunday. After three
hard fought matches, all
going the full three sets,
the Xtreme was off to the
gold medal game. The first
set was an evenly-matched
game, in which the Xtreme
fell 29-27. The second set
went to the Regina club
with Watrous winning the
silver medal in the Tier 2
division. It was a very long
and tiring weekend, with
the team playing 23 games
of volleyball in two days!
The playground area, which will be north of the curling
rink, will consist of an area about 50’ x 50’ and will
contain a large ‘toy’, benches, trees and in the future a
sheltered gazebo.
Sportsground playground committee member Terri
Amendt said in order to have the park, “This will require
significant funds, but already many generous donations
have been made by local businesses.”
The committee is looking to get $32,000 in total for
the project, which includes all the accessories that come
with it.
While Ouellette and the committee are aware of the
park on the outskirts of the sportsgrounds, he said they
made the decision to build the new area for two main reasons.
“The existing playground north of diamond four is
not the greatest location because kids have to leave the
sportsgrounds and the equipment is long overdue to be
Player heading
to lone-star state
By Daniel Bushman
TWM
Countless hours of
practicing, attendance at
numerous tournaments
and immense dedication
through school has served
as a way to set up one local
athlete for university.
After receiving 17 offers
and potential scholarships
from universities like
those in Regina, Alberta,
Kansas, Montana, Minot,
North Dakota and Alaska,
volleyball player Jaymie
Baumann settled on one
in particular: Lee College
in Baytown, Texas near
Houston.
The Gr. 12 student who
has already logged a ton
of miles through her high
school career, was first
scouted by Lady Rebels’
coach Tracie Johnson at a
prospects camp in Assiniboia.
“She said she was interested
and kept in touch
through email.”
After some deliberating,
Baumann said the
school sounded like a good
place to take up residence
and with Johnson entering
her 22nd season, stability
and a winning attitude
were draws that were quite
appealing. Two current
and soon-to-be teammates
of Baumann - both from
Canada and more specifically,
one from Regina - have
been keeping in contact
with her, describing how
You are entitled to free
relief from immovable
obstructions such as cart
paths or buildings as well
as abnormal ground conditions.
Using the club you
would make the stroke
From page six: PARK IT
they enjoy the school.
“It seems like a good
environment” and along
with that, the program
has been very successful.
Under Johnson, the Lady
Rebels have made six trips
to the National Junior College
Athletic Association
national tournament.
Baumann signed on for
a full scholarship for potentially
two years, and as
part of that signing, she
is guaranteed to start this
season, filling in at the
middle position.
She explained that she
will play for the first year
and then if she wants to
continue and “if they want
to keep me, they can sign
me for another year.”
Baumann, who could
have received a full scholarship
for four years decided
to stick with just the two
for now. “I did not know if
I wanted to take four years
(of schooling) or play volleyball
for that long.”
If she does continue,
Baumann can also be recruited
by a higher university.
A showcase tournament
is held in February
and other schools come to
check out the talent. However,
if she does not get recruited
by another school
and chooses to compete
past her two years, she can,
provided the Rebels or another
team shows interest.
Taking it one year at a
time, the athlete - who is
“We felt the need to put one in to spruce up the area
and parents can keep an eye on their kids.”
At the moment there is no specific name attached to
the park, but Ouellette said they would be open to listening
to ideas if any people came forward with them.
In order to get the place up and running, funds need to
be in place and while they have a good idea of the design
of the park, Ouellette figured the main unit would cost
between $22,000 and $26,000.
“We are looking for final support and volunteers to
help with a supervised install.”
Ideally, they hope to have phase one of the park done
by June and then completed in time for the next season
in May 2011.
GET READY FOR THE FIELD!
Utility Grade Turkey
$
1 19 lb/ $ 2 62 kg
ing tea in Taiwan, where
Huang is originally from,
is comparable to the art
of wine tasting in North
America. In Taiwan, tea
drinkers will generally
pay large sums of money
for good tea leaves with the
typical family owning at
least one set of tea ware.
The owner said tea culture
is part of a way of life
and can also contain different
methods like the Kung-
Fu tea ceremony, where the
taste of tea is paramount.
The art of the KungFu
ceremony has become a
skill and the equivalent of
one teacup of tea is brewed
at a time and put in small
cups. This allows for fine
control of temperature
versus brewing time.
The ceremony begins
with warming the pot
and heating the cups, and
progresses all the way to
smelling and tasting the
tea numerous times to get
an appreciation for its flavour
and aroma.
Huang said she hopes
to teach the KungFu ceremony,
among others, to
residents and tea lovers in
the area. “Because I like to
drink tea and have a graphthat,
tea. “Tea drinking is
my hobby and tea is related
with health, culture and
also can be colourful in our
daily lives.
“When I first came to
Watrous and Manitou
Beach, I felt that it was a
very comfortable, peaceful,
art-related place. I also met
a lot of friendly residents,
so I decided to open a tea
store here.”
For the owner, there is
more to her business than
just selling tea. Drinkic
design background, my
dream is to open an art-related
store to introduce my
lovely tea. I would like to
initiate tea knowledge, tea
culture and health benefits
from tea drinking.”
As part of sharing
her passion, Huang has
brought in teas such as
white, green, Oolong, high
mountain, black, puer, flavoured
and herb that come
from across the globe and
places like China, Japan,
Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka,
Kenya and South Africa.
“There are (also) some
very special teas such as
Taiwan oolong tea, Jin
Xuan tea, high mountain
tea, Acanthopanax tea and
Toona sinensis tea. For example,
an Acanthopanax
tea called eleu-therococcus
senticosus or Siberian ginseng
can help your body return
to a normal balance in
stressful circumstances.”
The business, which
is open six days a week
in May, will transition to
Tuesday to Saturday come
June and Huang hopes
that others in the area will
get a taste of the way tea is
appreciated in a different
part of the world.
The junior SRC is excited
to be hosting a talent
show for the elementary
students at VCS! On the
afternoon of May 13 we
will hold a talent show in
the music room. Elementary
students are invited
to participate in this exciting
show. We have many
talented students in the
elementary wing of our
school! We cannot wait to
see them perform!
After 26 years of tremendous
service, Sandra
Reid retired. The VCS
community had a farewell
tea Thursday, Apr. 29. Congratulations
to our elementary
choir for a beautiful
performance at her retirement!
Many students spent
noon hours rehearsing
their songs I Believe and
Tomorrow - some even took
home the lyrics and did extra
practice on their own!
Our ukulele band had a
great performance as well.
The students played with
fantastic accuracy and
precision and were a wonderful
addition to the retirement
program. School
Songs Medley and Ode to
Joy were greatly enjoyed.
Mrs. Reid plans on spending
time with her family,
gardening in her yard and
camping on her new lot at
Good Spirit Lake.
Some students in Gr. 3
to 6 joined us at noon hours
to be part of our Drumming
Circle from January
to March. Your joy and
enthusiasm in creating
rhythms and adapting
world music drumming
songs to our percussion
instruments (and a few
home-made drums as well)
was very much appreciated!
Gr. 3/4 and 5/6 classes
have completed their fourmonth
music units with
Mrs. Bell. They have all
shown wonderful growth
in their musicianship, especially
in their rhythmic,
creative and ensemble
(teamwork) abilities! They
have done this through
learning percussion instruments
(including unconventional
and homemade
instruments); games
teaching concepts in singing,
rhythm and creative
movement to music and
ukuleles.
The Gr. 1 and 2 class is
toad-ally excited about the
addition to our class! A
couple of weeks ago, Ally
and Renelle found a frog
out on the playground.
The girls brought it inside
and Ms. Shantz lent us an
aquarium to house our
new class pet. We had a big
surprise when we arrived
at school one morning
to find that our frog laid
about 2,000 eggs! We are
trying to take good care of
the eggs and are hoping to
see tadpoles soon. In the
meantime, we have learned
so much about the life
cycle of the frog!
The VCS Drama Club
performed Murder Most
Fowl by Craig Sodaro Wednesday,
Apr. 28 and it was
anything but fowl! The
students did a fantastic job
performing the play about
a murder in a high school
cafeteria during a cooking
competition. There were
chefs with crazy accents,
a modern-day pirate, lovesick
teenagers, a television
host with a fake moustache,
a scary cafeteria
lady, two ambitious reporters,
some very observant
audience members and a
murderous principal!
This weather has everyone depressed. We have had
lots of rain and snow. It was almost a blizzard May 4. Ken
has kept track of the rain and since the beginning of
April we have had over five inches that does not include
the snow. Hopefully it dries up fast so seeding can start.
Senior’s Club meeting
Fifteen seniors met in the rink waiting room, rather
than the Legion Hall, due to very inclement weather May
4.
On the agenda was the installation of the furnace from
Howard Crittenden into the basement. Glenn Crawford
will organize the move. Once that is done, renovation of
the two bathrooms into one larger one and flooring will
be discussed. The seniors are doing the community calendar
this year so be prepared for a knock on the door or
a phone call. They are also hosting the annual steak barbecue
the end of June and the $1,000 draw to be held at
the same time. Watch for posters and the coming events
in June.
Next meeting will be held May 18 at the Legion and
hopefully the snow is gone by then!
Plunkett
Deloris Wilson (Sutherland) • 944-4852
Plunkett held its flea market Saturday, Apr. 24 at the
community centre with 15 tables entered. It was a nice
day meeting up with folks. It was great seeing Lisle Wagner
who was our credit union manager in town years ago.
He was on his way to Saskatoon to attend a wedding.
Congratulations to Gail and David Pongracz who
became grandparents again. Born Apr. 22 to Cam and
Becky Reed of Calgary, a daughter Kalisa, a little sister
for big brother Noland.
Get well wishes to Jim Maynard who is in St. Paul’s
Hospital in Saskatoon.
Armella Paproski had her sister Rosemary Zimmerman
and her daughter Anna, both of Humboldt visit her
last weekend.
Jim and Jean Olah of Watrous, formerly of Plunkett,
had their daughter Sharon Kaminecki of St. Albert,
Alta. visit them for a few days.
The Plunkett ladies birthday group met at the home
of Deloris Sutherland to help Sharon Dunbar celebrate
her birthday, which was in March. She had been away for
eight weeks helping her sister as she had back surgery
in Calgary but lives in Olds, Alta. A game of knowledge
was played on “knowing your soaps”. Sharon opened a
basket of little gifts. This was followed by a light luncheon
with tea, coffee and birthday cake.
Spring is here, yards are getting green and leaves are
slowly bursting out. The birds are arriving and the purple
martins are looking for where they will be settling
down with their families.
Frank and Gizella Toth of Watrous, formerly of
Plunkett, had Rosemary Hordos of Lanigan visit them.
Gizella’s brother and sister-in-law John and Ann Hordos
of Wynyard also visited them.
Ken and I recently enjoyed a cup of tea with Frieda
McWillie in Watrous.
Visiting Roger and Isabelle Langston of Watrous recently
were Isabelle’s brother and sister-in-law Alex and
Phyllis McPherson of Saskatoon and daughter Stephanie
McPherson of Chilliwack, B.C.
Congratulations to Elaine Kostuk and Edmund
Drachenberg who will be married June 12 in Humboldt.
The Plunkett ladies birthday club met at the home of
Sharon Dunbar to celebrate Mary Hastie’s birthday. A
game of knowledge was played on finding names. This
was followed by Mary opening up her basket of household
gifts. A lovely light lunch of tea, coffee and birthday
cake was enjoyed. It was nice having Joan Jackson
and Maggie Pearce come out from Humboldt on such a
The Plunkett Friendship Club enjoyed a lovely potluck
supper Tuesday, May 4 with 14 in attendance. After
supper the men did the dishes and then card games followed.
It was a great evening out in spite of the weather.
There was lots of white fluffy stuff falling.
Frank and Gizella Toth of Watrous, formerly of Plunkett
area, had their granddaughter Tara Stratton of Saskatoon
visit them recently.
Dennis and Leona Credgeur spent the weekend in Regina
and were joined by their daughter Tanis and her
husband Rod Crawford and family at the Best Western
Hotel. They helped their little grandson Allandrex celebrate
his second birthday and enjoyed the waterslides
there. It was also grandpa Dennis’ birthday and they
enjoyed the weekend together.
Tuesday, May 4, it rained and snowed. Cheer up people,
the sun is shining behind the clouds. This moisture may
be the only amount you will get this year. Our maker has
a reason for all things.
Fifty-seven years ago on a Sunday and my dad’s birthday,
we, the family, woke up to a foot of snow. That year
dad had already gutted our two-storey dwelling on the
farm north of Lanigan and we were living in granaries
whose walls revealed daylight. March and April were
fairly warm, which gave us a chance to have Con Brown
and crew come and thresh the stooks that were left in the
fields from the fall. The summer was very warm and so
was the fall. That year around Dec. 18, we were blessed
with a foot of snow, the first snowfall since May 10. We
did get rain showers that summer and thunder and lightning.
So Apr. 4, we vacated the old house and Dec. 4 we
moved back into an unfinished dwelling and so dad and
family had a job until spring to complete what was still
left to do. Does anyone remember the year of 1953
Drake School news
April was a busy assessment month. Gr. 5 and Gr. 8
took the provincial writing assessment. Gr. 4 and 7 wrote
division based math assessments. Results from these
Colonsay’s got talent
Colonsay School hosted its annual talent show Friday
afternoon, Apr. 30. The show was open to the community
too. However, no one outside the school entered but there
were lots of community members in the audience.
There were 21 acts ranging from singing, dancing,
instrumentals to air bands and chants. The talent was
amazing.
Judges Amanda Brochu and Amy Parkinson picked
three winners. Third place was Kent Breckner singing
and playing guitar. It was a very moving performance.
Second place went to DJ Parish who played Stairway to
Heaven. It sounded like the real thing, especially with
the great performance given. Finally, first place went to
the very talented Tyler Wick on drums. His performance
captured the crowd and even though it was loud, it was
amazing. The audience was intrigued and enthusiastic
with cheers, clapping along and definitely with applause.
It was a fun-filled day.
Manitou Beach
Sue Alcock
By Daniel Bushman
TWM
When people hear about
Communities in Bloom,
planting and growing
flowers could come immediately
to mind. According
to chair of Manitou
Beach Communities in
Bloom Elaine Muzichuk,
however, “We are more
than just flowers.”
In fact, Manitou Beach
CIB is ramping up for another
year and has a checklist
of eight categories they
look at trying to follow:
natural and architecture
heritage conservation,
landscaped areas, tidiness
effort, environmental
awareness, community involvement
and civic pride,
urban forestry, floral displays,
and turf and ground
cover areas.
At their weekly Wednesday
gathering, member
Helen Johnson said the
group chose to enter into
the non-competitive category
again this year, the
second time of their five
years in existence.
Muzichuk said it would
be a tall order to become
competitive this year, given
the amount of improvements
that would have to
be done and the fact that by
having a smaller group, “It
is tough to reach the levels
we would like to.”
Being non-competitive
is not a bad thing as she
said it is a “great community
builder and we are
encouraging members of
the community to participate.”
The group is hoping to
continue to make the resort
village beautiful and
to improve it each year
with ongoing projects.
Volunteers looking
to bloom in community
“It is very important.
We want to have a good
first impression” for those
who come and visit.
Muzichuk had some
goals laid out at a recent
meeting: CIB wants “to
continue the beautification
of Manitou Beach .
. . to involve community
members, council and employees
of Manitou Beach
and businesses to enhance
Manitou Beach for residents
and visitors alike.”
Projects lined up for
the season include plaque
unveilings that mark and
honour the heritage at the
beach. The group collaborates
with Interlake to produce
the plaques and recently
unveiled their fifth,
Park and moving trees are
also on the slate of things
to do this month.
The tree nursery, located
by the regional park campground,
has been nurtured
for the past three years
and this season, a number
of seedlings will be moved
to Wellington Park. The
trees, which will be strategically
placed, are part
of about 300 in the nursery.
Muzichuk said people who
would like a tree for themselves
can acquire one by
giving a donation to CIB.
Another fundraiser taking
place is park benches.
Right now, five benches
have been purchased and
contain an ‘in memory of ’
message. The benches can
then be placed where the
buyer would like them in
and around the resort village.
The volunteer organization,
which is made up of
chair Elaine Muzichuk,
secretary Jackie Gross,
treasurer Verna Painchaud
and co-treasurer
Judy Kochylema, also includes
the community. “All
residents at Manitou Beach
are members as well.”
Painchaud said, “We
encourage all new people
to come out and lend a
hand.”
Over the coming months
planters will be put out,
cleaning, weeding and a
street walk will all take
place, while their t-shirts
will again be for sale.
The women all agreed
that if everyone did their
part, big or small, the village
could be an even better
place to visit. “Even
people looking after their
own yard. That is valued
just as much,” Painchaud
said.
Belated happy May Day, a holiday in Britain as well as
the time of the ancient Beltaine Gaelic Festival, which
marked the midpoint between the spring equinox and
summer solstice as well as the beginning of the pastoral
summer season when herds of livestock were put out to
pasture. As part of the celebrations, fires were lit on hills
and mountains of ritual and political significance and
also May boughs were hung on the doors and windows
of houses. In farm yards May bushes of rowan or whitethorn,
decorated with ribbons, flowers and garlands
were erected. There may have been human sacrifice too.
The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar
has altered the date of celebration. Whilst living in Edinburgh
I walked with friends to the top of King Arthur’s
Seat, an ancient volcano, for an ecumenical service commemorating
May Day and remember it well because of
the sleet and rain that made the celebration quite miserable!
Nowadays the service is held on Carlton Hill, I suspect
because it is larger and easier to get to. I am trying
to ignore mentioning the rain and snow that is coming
down as I write, but cannot.
Condolences and sympathy are extended from our
community to the family of Gordon Whetan who passed
away Apr. 24 at the age of 89. Gordon has enjoyed many
summers here at the family cabin.
My hope is, that by the time this goes to press, the
skimmers conflict between Dr. John-Mark Opondo, deputy
medical health officer and Manitou Springs CEO
Dwight Hayter will have been resolved and the pool open
or very close to opening. I have various thoughts about
the situation but have decided not to air them in public!
Sunday, May 2, Manitou Beach Communities in Bloom
PUBLIC NOTICE
The Operations and Engineering Division of SaskWater will be treating the
Saskatoon Southeast Water Supply System (S.S.E.W.S.) canal between the
Blackstrap and Zelma Reservoirs to control weeds and algae during the 2010
irrigation season. Treatment dates are May 4, May 18, June 1, June 15, June 29,
July 13, July 27, August 10, August 24 and September 8, 2010.
The canal between the Zelma and Dellwood Reservoirs will be treated for the same
reasons on May 5, May 19, June 2, June 16, June 30, July 14, July 28, August 11,
August 25 and September 9, 2010.
The chemical Magnacide “H” with its active ingredient “Acrolein”, will be noticeable
in the water by its offensive odour.
The canal flow rate may be lowered during treatment so that less chemical will be
required. The chemical will remain active in the canal for approximately 24 hours
after each treatment, and will diminish to non-detectable levels prior to treated
water entering the reservoirs. Area residents are warned that chemically treated
water is not to be used for drinking during this 24-hour period. Treated water may
also be harmful to the skin, causing irritation to exposed areas.
Dosages will be maintained at a level where the water can safely be used for
irrigation with no damage to field crops.
People are reminded that swimming in the canal at any time is
STRICTLY PROHIBITED; swimming in treated water may cause skin irritation.
Magnacide “H” can kill fish by suffocation, but it does not accumulate in fish flesh.
Fishing in the canal is not permitted.
This water treatment ensures irrigation intakes are free from clogging and adequate
flows are maintained in this multi-use system.
Since no other feasible alternative exists to control the growth of weeds in canals,
they are best controlled with this short-lived, widely-used, registered chemical.
Fifth historical plaque unveiled
Sue Alcock and Val Hinde unveil the plaque paying tribute
to the Church of the Holy Spirit at a tea in All Saint’s
Anglican Church Parish Hall Sunday, May 2. Chairper-
10053AA00
Church of the Holy Spirit
plaque unveiling
submitted by Sue Alcock, Manitou Beach
“The spiritual needs of local Anglican residents and
summer visitors were met with the construction of this
church in 1931” so begins the text for the fifth historical
plaque by Manitou Beach Communities in Bloom (MB-
CIB). This plaque, commemorating The Church of the
Holy Spirit was unveiled Sunday, May 2 by Val Hinde
and Sue Alcock at a well attended tea held in All Saints’
Anglican Church Parish Hall. Special guests were Rev.
Colin Clay and the mayors of both communities Eric
Upshall and Ed Collins. All three men spoke of their
support and goodwill for the historical plaque project.
Elaine Muzichuk, chairperson of MBCIB was emcee
for the tea and Sue Alcock talked a little about how the
plaque came into being and how it was initiated by Val
Hinde’s desire to commemorate the former church.
Work on the plaque text was done by Sue Alcock with
Jean and Lionel Sproule and the photograph came from
the Diocese of Saskatoon archives located in Saskatchewan
Archives, Saskatoon. The late Dorothy Hunt was
the first to talk about this church to me and twigged my
interest.
The church was dedicated Monday, June 20, 1932 by
the Bishop of Qu’Appelle, the Right Reverend Malcolm
Taylor McAdam Harding, “in the presence of a large and
devout congregation” because at that time the newly created
Diocese of Saskatoon lacked a bishop. Bishop Lloyd
had retired in 1931 and the new bishop, William Hallam,
did not assume the title of Bishop of Saskatoon until
Nov. 9, 1932.
Constructed of wood on a lot donated by J.J. MacLachlan
by Alf Parsonson, the building measured 20
feet by 40 feet and cost $1,000 to construct. In 1936 more
pews were added by Parsonson so it could seat a congregation
of 65. During the summer months Evensong and
Holy Communion services were conducted by the vicar
from All Saints’ Church Watrous and Sunday school was
available for children, including our own Lionel Sproule
son of Manitou Beach Communities in Bloom Elaine Muzichuk
was emcee for the tea.
– photos submitted by Marie Brumwell, Manitou Beach
who grew up here.
The church was located on the northeast corner of
Watrous St. and Lakeview Ave. and as it was so close to
the ball ground sometimes services were interrupted by
the excited spectators!
According to the Record of Services Tuesday, July 19,
1932 a baptism service was held with two communicants.
Does anyone know who was baptized that day
July 19, 1942, there was a record congregation and extra
chairs set out for some of the 300 members of the Security
Corps who were on parade at Manitou Beach with
the salute taken by Colonel Stayor at Hiawatha Inn.
Records for the church are scant as the church was
probably not locked and records kept in a parishioner’s
home. Who knows the fate of those documents - fire,
flood or relatives clearing out the house after the death
of the owner could have been their demise.
In 1953 the church was moved to a lot closer to the
Chalet Pool and in 1957 relocated again, this time into
Watrous where it became the Parish Hall for All Saints’
Church. Many Anglican locals remember attending
AYPA and Sunday school as well as other social events in
the hall.
Just when the former church was moved to a local
farm yard is hard to pinpoint. A new vicarage, funded
mostly by a legacy from Alf Pierce of Manitou Beach
was still under construction in November 1967 when Rev.
W.S. Tibbo was inducted and his reception was held in
the Parish Hall. Most likely the old hall was moved once
the vicarage became habitable and the old vicarage - the
present day Parish Hall – was maybe remodelled. So perhaps
the former Church of the Holy Spirit was moved
away 1968 or 1969 Who has a good and accurate memory
of these events
The Power of Prayer
Prayer is a force as real as terrestrial gravity. I have seen men, after all therapy had
failed, lifted out of disease and melancholy by the serene effort of prayer. Only in prayer
do we achieve the complete and harmonious assembly of body, mind and spirit, which
gives the frail human reed its unshakable strength.
access to patient contact
information without your
consent
Despite disapproval of
Saskatchewan’s Information
Brad Wall’s Sask. Party is
perfectly comfortable violating
your privacy.
Health foundations will now
have access to private
mismanagement. In a short
time, Brad Wall has run up a
$1.3 Billion deficit and now
you are paying the price.
From front page:
HOUSING
unknown after the new
long-term care facility is
constructed, Coulter felt
a meeting needed to take
place.
“We saw it as a minor
crisis . . . the town was really
excellent in helping this
(meeting) to happen.”
The evening, which included
Coulter, Watrous
mayor Ed Collins and developer
Dan Boehr was
aimed to gather ideas and
plan for the future of the
area with respect to senior
housing of all varieties.
At the Apr. 29 meeting
Coulter said, “The conservative
estimate of the
loss of 20 to 25 spots for
seniors is the reason for
our gathering. It is the
hope of organizers to provide
information, solicit
opinions and consider the
future.”
Redden said, “It is a first
step. It was intended for discussion
and after that, (to)
sit down and see if there is
a course of action.”
Coulter said, “Watrous
is becoming more and
more of a destination for
people moving from small
towns to here. We get applications
from all over the
place for our 83 units that
we administrate.”
After some dialogue
within groups, Coulter outlined
some highlights, one
that including potential
funding through grants.
He also talked about fundraising
initiatives but said
they would not pursue that
just yet, in order to allow
the long-term care facility
to get monies it requires to
construct a new building.
While there was nothing
coming this year from
the provincial government,
Coulter hopes the
group can get something
written up and submitted
so that next year if funding
is available, hopefully they
will be in line to access it.
In order to move ahead
with these needs, a citizen
committee was established
consisting of Janice Siegfried,
Lynn Mitchell, Coulter,
Dorman Hutchinson,
Carol Mudry, Cindy Garner
and Sylvia Dubeczy.
The group’s tasks involve
developing goals and
strategy in order to pursue
action. They also are
looking for support from
Watrous, Manitou Beach,
Watrous Housing Authority
and specialists from financial
institutions.
Coulter said they want
to keep the initiative alive
and, with enough funds,
hope to bring in a consultant
to explain what exactly
the community needs.
“We had good feedback”
at the meeting.
“Anytime you can get 80
people from the community
talking about community
concerns is fantastic.”
LAWN & GARDEN
Through rain and snow and sleet . . .
A phrase more commonly attributed to the
early postal carriers, it also seems an apt
way to describe the never-ending struggle
of the two hardy men at the end of Watrous’
From front page: MANAGEMENT SEEKING EXPLANATION
eral salt buildup on the inside of the
skimmer piping.
However, they said, “We have proven
to the department of health with a recent
comprehensive engineers report,
that our pool water flows through our
filter system approximately 14 times per
day. The minimum required turnover of
any pool is four times a day through its
filter system. We are filtering the pool
water approximately three and a half
times more than the minimum amount
required. We also drain off approximately
8,000 to 10,000 gallons of pool water
every night to waste and top up the pool
with fresh lake water as a result.”
In order to get the pool running again,
“We will be attempting to clear the block
skimmers very soon with a special liquid,
and we are optimistic with the results.
“(Management) have tried their best
to comply with every demand of the department
of health despite their lack of
communication, and unwillingness to
answer our questions regarding this and
other issues. We ultimately view this as
an unfair attack,” reiterated the spa’s
press release.
Opondo understands the issue is extremely
sensitive and like Hayter, is not
happy that it has come down to this. “It
comes to a point where if the health hazards
continue, we have to make a decision,”
Opondo said. “I think there has
been quite substantial communication.”
Hayter said public health is the utmost
concern and that he did not receive
anything in writing from the health region
regarding the bacteria levels in the
pool being too high.
Main Street. During the inclement weather
of the last few weeks, these two continued
to persevere through the worst of it.
––TWM photo by Daniel Bushman
“The engineer addressed all their concerns
within the report except for the
fact that the skimmers are plugged.
“We worked with them, complied with
them and they rejected a detailed work
plan and timeline to free up the skimmers
without any reason.”
In an effort to try and get some answers,
Hayter set up a meeting this past
Friday with officials from the health minister’s
office and representatives with the
health region.
“I think it has been blown out of proportion,”
Hayter said. “They are not recognizing
the long-term repercussions.”
Manitou Beach mayor Eric Upshall
said he is working with the spa in a supportive
role. “My obligation is to help
any way I can.
“Over the last number of years the
place has really taken off. In the last six
months Dwight Hayter put a lot of money
into the place and it is cleaner, safer and
a friendlier environment. That was welcomed
by all of us.”
Upshall who accompanied Hayter to
the meeting hoped that something would
get resolved. Instead of going back over
the past two years, “I’m saying six months
is the time frame which they should look
at. There has been tremendous change
in the management style and an obvious
commitment that can’t go unnoticed. I
am encouraging the Saskatoon Health
Region and the department of health to
come forward quickly with the details of
what has to be done.”
Despite the closure, the hotel, gift shop
and restaurant remain open and Hayter
hopes to take the closed sign off the pool
as soon as he can.
