Is Rhyl High School an Eco-school? Yes!!
At the beginning of November RHS received the Eco-schools Bronze award.
Members of the Student Council and Eco-schools Committee took Year Assemblies to
show the students & staff alike what we currently do in order to be gain the award,
but also to show what we need to do to work towards the Silver Award.
What we currently do:
Recycle some paper, cardboard, glass & plastic bottles, drinks cartons
 Switch off some electrical appliances
Ground force grows some produce in the gardens
Is it enough? No!!
The caretakers spend 3-4 hours every day picking up litter
RHS pays £5000 a year for a large skip that is emptied every week that doesn’t
get filled
RHS will get taxed £2500 for exceeding its carbon commitment by using and
wasting too much energy
Our next steps:
Recycle all paper, envelopes, cardboard, drinks cartons etc; in the hessian bags
in classrooms
RHS has a textiles bank and will get paid for every kg of clothes, shoes, belts
etc we recycle
 Technology can recycle drinks cans
Ground Force can reuse any 2 litre drinks bottles
Food Technology can reuse screw top jars
Put all other litter in the bins
Students and staff alike must make a concerted effort to switch off lights,
computers, monitors and all plugs when not in use,
and to shut windows when leaving rooms
The Eco-schools committee is currently
carrying out an energy audit around the school to see
where the most progress needs to be made.
Opposite is Catrin the Eco-schools Officer
presenting the award to the
Ground Force & School Council members.
