Science Department Changes<br />

Greetings crewmembers! As your new Chief<br />

Science Officer (ChSC) I want to say<br />

welcome to our two newest science<br />

department members - ENS Gregory Jacobs<br />

and Crewman Andy Gann! We are happy to<br />

have you aboard and we look forward to<br />

serving with you! I would also like to share<br />

with the entire crew the beginnings of our<br />

departmental structure changes.<br />

As the <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> has grown<br />

significantly as a chapter, we wanted to<br />

restructure the department in a way that<br />

would focus the purpose of the department,<br />

align personnel into useful roles based on<br />

their preferences, and encourage<br />

participation of new unassigned<br />

crewmembers in the science department. (Of<br />

course, other department members are<br />

welcome to join science activities as well!)<br />

The changes begin with a two section system<br />

based on desired participation levels. The<br />

first section is the STATS officers. The<br />

acronym STATS stands for “Star Trek,<br />

Australasian, Terran, and Science fiction.”<br />

Officers assigned to the science department<br />

may earn one of these roles:<br />

Star Trek Sciences and Technology<br />

Officer: this position studies and reports<br />

historical and recent (or projected) canon and<br />

non-canon Star Trek science and<br />

technologies that is of interest to the <strong>USS</strong><br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> crew and guests.<br />

Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all<br />

things science, as it pertains to Star Trek.<br />

Australasian Sciences and Technology<br />

Officer: this position studies and reports<br />

historical and recent (or projected) science<br />

and technologies that directly affects the area<br />

of Earth known as Australia, New Zealand,<br />

and nearby areas that is of interest to<br />

the <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> crew and guests.<br />

Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all<br />

things science, as it pertains to Australasia<br />

and related locales.<br />

Terran Sciences and Technology Officerthis<br />

position studies and reports historical<br />

and recent (or projected) science and<br />

technologies that directly affects the other<br />

parts of Earth and the universe that is of<br />

universe than about the core of our<br />

planet. Could a crazy mission get to the<br />

Journey to the Center of the Earth<br />

Sci-Fi Sciences and Technology<br />

Officer: this position studies and<br />

science and technologies as seen in the world<br />

of science fiction that is of interest to<br />

the <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> crew and guests.<br />

Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all<br />

things science, as it pertains to Science<br />

Fiction.<br />

The second section of the science department<br />

is the science staff. Multiple crewmen can<br />

fill these two roles:<br />

Science and Technology Officers: these<br />

positions contribute to all science areas<br />

without concentration in one area.<br />

Requirement: OTS, an interest in all things<br />

science.<br />

Science and Technology Crewmen: these<br />

positions contribute to all science areas<br />

without concentration in one area. These<br />

positions are filled with non-commissioned<br />

crew. Requirement: an interest in all things<br />

science.<br />

All those who choose to be assigned to the<br />

science department aboard the ‘<strong>Cross</strong> are<br />

encouraged to do four things:<br />

1- HAVE FUN!<br />

2- Pass OTS offered by the STARFLEET<br />

Academy (even if you choose not to be<br />

an “officer,”<br />

3- Take STARFLEET Academy (and/or<br />

SFMC Academy) courses,<br />

4- Share your knowledge, interests, and<br />

discoveries through the <strong>ScuttleButt</strong>.<br />

If you are shy and not a great writer, that’s<br />

OK! I can help you through editing and<br />

revisions! The important things are that you<br />

participate to the level you wish, have fun,<br />

and contribute to the chapter in some way!<br />
