Science Department Changes
Greetings crewmembers! As your new Chief
Science Officer (ChSC) I want to say
welcome to our two newest science
department members - ENS Gregory Jacobs
and Crewman Andy Gann! We are happy to
have you aboard and we look forward to
serving with you! I would also like to share
with the entire crew the beginnings of our
departmental structure changes.
As the USS Southern Cross has grown
significantly as a chapter, we wanted to
restructure the department in a way that
would focus the purpose of the department,
align personnel into useful roles based on
their preferences, and encourage
participation of new unassigned
crewmembers in the science department. (Of
course, other department members are
welcome to join science activities as well!)
The changes begin with a two section system
based on desired participation levels. The
first section is the STATS officers. The
acronym STATS stands for “Star Trek,
Australasian, Terran, and Science fiction.”
Officers assigned to the science department
may earn one of these roles:
Star Trek Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and reports
historical and recent (or projected) canon and
non-canon Star Trek science and
technologies that is of interest to the USS
Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Star Trek.
Australasian Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and reports
historical and recent (or projected) science
and technologies that directly affects the area
of Earth known as Australia, New Zealand,
and nearby areas that is of interest to
the USS Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Australasia
and related locales.
Terran Sciences and Technology Officerthis
position studies and reports historical
and recent (or projected) science and
technologies that directly affects the other
parts of Earth and the universe that is of
We know more about the edge of the
universe than about the core of our
planet. Could a crazy mission get to the
bottom of things
interest to the USS Southern Cross
crew and guests. Requirements:
OTS, SCE, an interest in all things
science.
Sci-Fi Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and
reports historical and recent (or projected)
science and technologies as seen in the world
of science fiction that is of interest to
the USS Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Science
Fiction.
The second section of the science department
is the science staff. Multiple crewmen can
fill these two roles:
Science and Technology Officers: these
positions contribute to all science areas
without concentration in one area.
Requirement: OTS, an interest in all things
science.
Science and Technology Crewmen: these
positions contribute to all science areas
without concentration in one area. These
positions are filled with non-commissioned
crew. Requirement: an interest in all things
science.
All those who choose to be assigned to the
science department aboard the ‘Cross are
encouraged to do four things:
1- HAVE FUN!
2- Pass OTS offered by the STARFLEET
Academy (even if you choose not to be
an “officer,”
3- Take STARFLEET Academy (and/or
SFMC Academy) courses,
4- Share your knowledge, interests, and
discoveries through the ScuttleButt.
If you are shy and not a great writer, that’s
OK! I can help you through editing and
revisions! The important things are that you
participate to the level you wish, have fun,
and contribute to the chapter in some way!
Our current department members are:
Chief Science Officer
Australasian Sciences and Technology Officer
Star Trek Sciences and Technology Officer
Science and Technology Crewman
Science and Technology Crewman
