Gerontology
It literally means study of old man. It is the study of the social, psychological and biological aspects
of aging. It is distinguished from geriatrics, which is the branch of medicine that studies the diseases
of older adults. Gerontologists include researchers and practitioners in the fields of biology, medicine,
nursing, dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, psychiatry, sociology,
economics, political science, architecture, pharmacy, public health, housing and anthropology.
Gerontology means studying physical, mental, and social changes in people as they age. Aging can be
chronological aging, biological aging, psychological aging, and social aging. Gerontology has become
an important subject in recent times due to the changing average age of the population. There is need
to address issues of medical resources and community services to these changing demographics. We
have to ensure that in our cities, towns and villages the contribution of older people is valued. Finally,
let us look at old age as a magnificent sunset. Just as the deep red of the setting sun holds the
promise of a beautiful tomorrow, a life well lived conveys the message of hope to the future generations.

DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
Department of Philosophy organized a workshop jointly with BOS in Logic &Philosophy on Revised
Syllabus – Credit Based System of S.Y.B.A. Philosophy Paper – II & III on Sept. 26, 2012. It
organized an educational tour to Manashakti Kendra, Lonavala, on Dec.15, 2012. Four teachers accompanied
the students.
Department of Commerce, Junior College, organized a field visit to R’City in October 2012. The
students of F.Y.J.C. commerce were exposed to different kinds of business practices in R’ City. The
F.Y.J.C. Commerce students were taken to Yes Bank to get an exposure to the functioning of banks.
Department of Political Science organized a study tour to Aga Khan Palace, Shaniwarwada and
Katraj Zoological Park in Pune on Dec. 4, 2012.
Department of Information and Technology organized an intercollegiate Fest Symposium 2012
on Dec.5- 6, 2012.The Fest was inaugurated by our Principal, Dr. Usha Mukundan and the inauguration
of the Events was done by our Vice Principal, Dr. S.T.Ingale. 468 students from various colleges
participated in the events. The technical events were Crack the Code[Programming] ,Mind
Boggler[Quiz] ,Web Master[Web Designing] ,Tech Art[Graphics Designing] , Inno Wave
[Presentation] and Placement Simulator . The non-technical events were Ad Hoc [Ad Design], Speak
Up or Give Up [Debate], Fastest Finger First [Typing] and Be a Journalist.
Department of Hindi organized a two day National Seminar on Dr. Ram Vilas Sharma ki Sahitya
Sadhana on Dec. 7-8, 2012. The Seminar coincided with Centennial birthday celebration of Dr. Ram
Vilas Sharma and Golden Jubilee Celebration of the College. Shri Anurag Chaturvedi, Member of
Maharashtra Rajya Hindi Sahitya Academy, Mumbai, inaugurated the seminar. Dr. Shivkumar Mishra,
renowned Marxist and Critic, Anand (Gujarat), presided over the function. Dr. Ajay Tiwari, renowned
critic, Delhi in his keynote address touched upon various aspects of life of Dr. Ram Vilas
Sharma. Eminent personalities like Dr. Vijay Mohan Sharma, Son of Dr. Ram Vilas Sharma and Senior
Writer & Critic, Delhi, Dr. Shribhagwan Singh, renowned critic, Bhagalpur, Prof. Shriram Tripathi,
Dr. Vijay Kumar, famous poet and critic, Mumbai, Dr. Ramji Tiwari, famous writer, Mumbai,
Dr. Devendra Chaube, critic, J.N.U., Delhi, Dr. Shriprakash Mishra, Senior Story Writer, Allahabad,
Dr. Radheshyam Upadhyay, Senior Marxist and critic, Mumbai, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Dube, Gujarat
and Dr. Amrendra Sharma, Wardha, attended and presented paper during the Seminar. On this occasion
Dr. Vijay Mohan Sharma presented a short feature film revealing many other unknown aspects
of his father’s biography. Professors from various colleges in Mumbai also presented papers on Dr.
Ram Vilas Sharma during this occasion.

Department of Mathematics organized a workshop on Aspects of Mathematics on Dec. 14 – 15,
2012. Dr. D. Datta, an eminent scientist from B.A.R.C. inaugurated the seminar and an eminent Professor
M.S. Raghunathan from I.I.T. Mumbai concluded the seminar through the valedictory function. Out
of 26 teacher participants from various colleges, 11 contributed in Paper Presentations. Dr. Subhash
Bhusnoormath from Dharvad University and Dr. Shraddha Ingale from Pune University were the invited
speakers. The Deparrtment celebrated Maths Day by organizing a workshop on Origami and arranging
games for both Degree and Junior college on Dec. 20, 2012.
Department of Economics held its prestigious students’ event Arth-Gyaan on Dec. 15, 2012. The
chief guest for the inaugural function was Mr. Virendra Gupta, Executive, Tata International Ltd. He
gave a talk on Challenges of Globalization. The theme for the 4 competitions held was Development of
India. Along with the Poster Competition, Business Buzz and Eco-Talk, a Model Making Competition
was also introduced for the first time. The topics were White, Green, Blue and Yellow Revolutions in
India. In the I Lead competition, the students donned role models of 4 progressive ministers- Smt. Sheila
Dixit, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, Shri Narendra Modi and Shri Nitish Kumar and spoke on the development
of their states. In Business Buzz, students made group presentations on Successful Managing Directors-
Mr. Venugopal Dhoot, Mr. Pranoy Roy,Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Ms. Naina Lal. Students spoke
on FDI: Boon or Bane , Innovative Energy Solutions- the Need of the Hour and Economics of Medical
Tourism in Eco talk. More than 125 students enthusiastically participated in the different events and
were judged by professors invited from various colleges. The event received an overwhelming response
from 20 colleges.
Department of Botany organized Botanica, the annual event, to showcase the diversity of plants and
their wide applications on Dec. 20, 2012. The theme was Recent Trends in Plant Science. The program
was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Ranjan Karulkar, Chief Horticulturist, Hiranandani Gardens,
Powai. Project competition was arranged for S.Y.B.Sc students on this occasion.The exhibition was
visited by many students of schools like North Bombay, Hindi High School, Gurukul etc from the vicinity.
A workshop cum sale of Warli Tribal Art products was also organized on the same day.
Department of Zoology arranged a visit of M.Sc. II students to ACTREC, Kharghar, on Nov. 6, 2012.
The department organized their annual event Zoo-fest exhibition on Dec. 21, 2011. Dr. B.B. Sharma,
Principal, Vaze College was invited as a chief guest. The exhibition included various exhibits showcased
by the students under different sections like zoo-art, zoo-craft, zoo-rangoli, zoo-exhibit, zoo-chart
and zoo-click. Zoo-quiz was arranged for F.Y. students. The exhibition was visited by various students
from the vicinity.
ASSOCIATION NEWS
Economics Association invited and felicitated 4 students –Ms. Saika Banoo, Mr. More Ganesh, Ms.
Tasleeem Shaikh and Ms. Nasreen Mohd. Hanif, who secured first class at the T.Y.B.A Economics Examination
in April 2012. They interacted with the present students of T.Y.B.A. on Oct. 18, 2012
SAP arranged a visit to Sandeepany Sadhanalay, Powai, on Oct.23, 2012. It conducted a workshop on
How to set a Goal. SAP organized a talk by Sw. Swatmanandati (Acharya Chinmaya Mission) on
Transformation - Transform Nation on Dec. 4, 2012.

Philosophy Association organized Discussion Competition on Feminism for F.Y.B.A. and T.Y.B.A.
on Dec. 21, 2012 and for S.Y.B.A. on Dec.24, 2012.
R.J. College Library organized Free distribution of Withdrawn Books (Gratis) on Dec. 12-13, 2012 for
the students of RJ College. Almost 90% of books were taken away by the students. Since, students were
allowed to take only one book against their identity card, maximum students could avail of this opportunity.
Mrs. Shubhangi Vedak conducted a One Week Training Program on Library Operations and Services
for Library Support Staff from Dec. 24- 31, 2012. There were 27 participants which included Library Support
Staff from Academic Institutions from different parts of Maharashtra.

NSS NEWS
NSS organized Drug Awareness campaign on Oct. 1, 2012. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti a Cleanup
drive at Ghatkopar station, a prayer session & sketch competition were organized.
A special 7-Days residential camp was organized at Yusuf MeharAli center, Tara, Tal-panvel, Dist-
Raigad between Oct. 11-17, 2012. During this camp various activities like road making, village cleanup
drive, rural-tribal interaction, poster, street play etc. were conducted.
A Flash mob to create awareness about Diabetes was organized at high street phoenix-mall, 95 students
participated in the event on Nov. 9 2012.
Ghatkopar clean-up drive was organized on Nov. 26, 2012. This event was highlighted by media. Five
NSS volunteers participated as peer volunteers in AIDS Awareness two-day workshop, organized by
MDACS at Somaiya college. One of our NSS volunteer Chetan Rokade won 2nd prize in slogan intercollegiate
competition, organized by SOSVA NGO on Nov. 30, 2012.
NSS unit has started Mrutunjay Club in collaboration with Mumbai police, Ghatkopar branch, on Dec.
1, 2012. Police Inspector Mr. Puri, gave the inaugural address.
Blood donation camp was organized with J.J. Mahanagar & Anviksha blood banks on Dec. 20, 2012 .
Total 162 units of blood was collected.
A peace rally was organized to create awareness on violence against women, on Dec. 24, 2012 . 250
students participated in the rally.
COLLEGE NEWS
A research scholar meet was organized by the Department of Biosciences on the occasion of felicitation
of Dr. S.M. Karmarkar on his 81st birthday. Dr. R.A. Sanghavi delivered the keynote address on
Nutraceuticals. More than 1000research scholars from 1976 batch till date attended the meet.
Placement Cell organized a seminar on What after Grdauation was organized for B.Com students on
Dec 1, 2012 and for B.Sc students on Dec. 4, 2012. A seminar on Opportunities in BFSI Sector was
organized for T.Y.B.Com and T.Y.BBI on Dec. 3, 2012. Godrej conducted a campus drive for final
year graduates on Dec. 7, 2012. Around 110 students participated in the drive. eClerx conducted a campus
drive for final year graduates on Dec. 11, 2012. Around 130 students participated in the drive. 15
students were shortlisted and given an offer letter.

Junior College organized an Intercollegiate Cultural Fest, Pehchaan, as part of the Golden Jubilee
Celebration on Dec. 4, 2012. The following events- Anarkali Disco Chali(Western Group Dance), Desi
Beats(Folk Group Dance) and Aaja Nach Le(Solo Dance) received tremendous response from participants
from different colleges. R.J. College won the first prize in Western Group Dance and an Encouragement
prize in Solo Dance.
Career Fair - 'Vistas 2012' was organised on Dec. 5, 2012.. The mega event included an exhibition of
posters displaying various career options by Young buzz. Stalls were put up by professional institutions
and organizations. A career talk was organised for Degree and Junior college students.
Cultural Association organized Reflections 2012, the Annual College Festival on Dec.17-18, 2012.
On 17th December, the festive occasion began with the Fine Arts and Literary events and Performing
Arts was held on the following day. The student volunteers of the Cultural Association screened a film
that exemplified the theme of Golden Jubilee Year Reflections 2012- Cinemagic: Celebrating 100
years of Indian Cinema. The program, was sponsored by Body Canvas Tattoos, Vermillion, Coke,
NIIT. Ex- students: Ms. Nupura Pathare, (Miss Maharashtra, Lokmat Yuvanext) and Mr. Siddhant
Sharma, aspiring playback singer, who were part of Cultural association in the past were Guests of
Honour of the festival.
NCC NEWS
The NCC unit successfully completed The Cycle Expedition from Ghatkopar to Sriharikota (AndraPradesh)
between Dec. 15 to 28, 2012. Commanding Officer Colonel Saini of 6 MAH. BN. Mumbai ‘A’ Group was
the chief guest for the flagging off ceremony. The NCC cadets through this expedition spread the message
of National integration. They interacted with the villagers and created awareness about social issues such
as child labour, diseases like AIDS, saving environment , saving girl child and also discussed the ill effects
of anti-social habits like alcoholism, drugs etc.
STUDENT NEWS
Students of R. J. College won 10 prizes at the Intercollegiate Fest Lamhein held at Somaiya college on
Dec. 20, 2012. The first prize was won by Mr.Saurabh Kesari (Poster making), Mr.Prathamesh
Bhogale(Rangoli & Name plate making), Ms. Sushmita Yadav and Mr.Yogesh Mishra(Duet Singing),
Mr.Swapnil Paste and Mr.Rupesh Salve(Antakshari). The second prize was given to
Mr.Narendra Bharadwaj for Instrumental music. Mr.Suresh Vaishya(Tattoo making), Mr.Eram
Khan(Solo dance), Mr.Saurabh Kesari(Cartooning) got the third prize. Ms. Bhagyashree Khanolkar
and Ms. Pranali Bandivadekar received the consolation prize for nail painting.
Mr. Sandeep Yadav(S.Y.B.A.), was awarded First Prize for his paper presentation titled Freedom and
Responsibility in the Inter-collegiate Paper Presentation Competition in a Seminar organized by Dept.
of Philosophy, University of Mumbai held on Dec.7, 2012.

Why are People Unhappy
What is life Life is a cocktail
of joys, sorrows and all types of
complications. People face various
types of problems in the journey of
birth to death. Death itself is a terrible
event for everyone. Natural disasters,
death & love, tragedies of life
are sorrowful sentimental experiences
which can’t be ignored .Problems created by human
beings are more dangerous than life threatening disasters.
People are not only fighting in the name of religion but
they are also creating sects that abuse each other. Political
crisis, terrorism and crime bring horrible situation in
a nation and destroy not only the rights but also the freedom
of people. Cheating , robbery, fraud & corruption are
global occurrences.
All these problems directly or indirectly affect
every human being because all of us are connected to each
other. People are facing lot of personal problems. Most of
them have increasingly negative thoughts like hatred, anger,
jealousy etc. These human weaknesses comes from
birth as a seed with the passage of time, they grow like
trees.
We have so many problems in life because of which people
believe in the almighty, they also pray and worship supernatural
powers, to attain relief. Once the soul is enlightened
or awakened, it glorifies the world. On the contrary,
a cruel person spreads sorrow. Today’s terrorists are demonic
and cruel exactly like Ravana and Kansa of olden
times. Thus, this planet is becoming uglier day by day.
Cunning people break the law and can escape
easily but nobody is forgiven by the law of nature. Every
creature is under the control of some supernatural power
and everybody has to face the consequences according to
their past actions or Karma. Bhagwadgita also teaches the
same lesson. According to Lord Krishna, only Karma is
important. Good karma designs a perfect happy life while
bad karma designs imperfect and tragic life.
Thus there exists an equation between Karma & life.
So it is impossible to get full satisfaction from this life till we
breathe our last. The struggle to achieve something great
makes us lose real happiness. People are in search of true
contentment. Many yogis have found the solution to our troubles.
Eventually, few of them advice that we must free ourselves
from worldly pleasures so that we can reach our final
destination- happiness.
