8 R. J. Herald, July-Aug 2011GUEST EDITOR’S COLUMNChanging structure of Teacher Taught RelationshipA teacher is considered the builder of a nation as theonus is on the teacher for the development of the characterof the students who are the future and backbone of acountry. Therefore, teacher- taught relationship has beenput on a high pedestal in our ancient system of education. But in contemporary times, the teacher- taught relationshiphas traversed a long way from the Gurukul Systemof Education to the Online System. In the former system, the teachers used to play multiple roles of being parents, guru, guide, mentor, disciplinarian and many others asthe students used to be in the care of the teacher 24 x 7until they completed their education. The relationshipexistent was Teacher students [I Q + E Q + SQ]. Thestudents also used to respect the teacher a lot, even worshipthem like God and the system used to prepare themfor life by developing their IQ (intelligent Quotient), EQ(Emotional Quotient) and SQ (Spiritual Quotient). But with the introduction of formal education system, therelationship took a U turn as the teacher and studentsstay together for only about 5 -6 hours and the key emphasisis on providing the 3 R’s of learning, thereby developingonly their intelligent quotient ( IQ). In this process, the vital essence of life i.e. EQ and SQ are not onlyneglected but lost too. The teacher does become facilitatorand friend, at times. Yet, neither the teacher nor thestudents have the freedom to interact freely due to theirconstraints or limitations and both of them tend to losethe rapport which used to be shared between them inGurukuls changing the relation to Teacher - Students[ I Q + E Q - SQ ].Earlier in joint families, the scenario used to be differentas mothers and other relatives used to share time withchildren by attending to their emotional needs and they(children) never used to feel isolated, alienated, frustratedor depressed. Also, as the parents used to pay attentionto most of the activities of the children, there waslittle chance of students being led astray. On the otherhand, in present times, with both the parents working in anuclear and small family system, students experienceloneliness and are glued to television, mobile, internet orspend too much time with their friends to do away withthe void in their emotional lives, and this generally leadsto disintegration of personality.Although the present education system does allow theteacher and students to share some rapport, yet they feellack of love and affection in their lives as their parents beingbusy on professional front can’t provide them qualitytime however willing they (the parents) are to do so. Insuch circumstances, what will happen when we are thinkingof implementing online education throughout is quite worrisome. The teachers and students will not be able to spendeven a few hours together; there will be absence of face toface communication most of the time. This will lead to chaosas students will become more and more mechanical intheir relations and emotions will find no place in their livespaving the way for greater incidences of drug addiction, domestic, psychological and social violence including terrorism. The relation in future will be like – Teacher [ ] students(the wall of emotional & spiritual distance betweenthe teacher and students)Therefore, we teachers, as torch bearers have a social responsibilityto have a close look at where online educationwill be leading our students to?Know your Guest Editor:Prof. Sharmila JajodiaProf. Sharmila Jajodia, Department of Englishloves listening to Gazals.
