Bochenek held the Pol-ish builders accountable for every penny
sent to thern for constructing the churches, said Yoder.
Yoder recently saw the completion of a huge church in Jano\^/ice
Poland. The church began in 1984 when Bochenek bought a pa.rk
and an old brewery. He then turned the project over to Yoder
to oversee. The peopl-e of the tovn, j-ncJ-uding kids, teenagers,
and elderly, volunteered af1 the labor and the brewery was
taken dovrn brick by brick and noved to the pa.rk.
There it was rebuj-It into the deslgn of a beautiful church.
The project took three years to complete and the building
includes facilities for a sunrner youth camps.
When Bochenei< died last July he was in his 70s and had
conpleted 45 churches. Yoder is nor,r working from here in
the states to help ful-fill his friend's goal in Poland.
Complete his goal
Although he is no longer doing concerts, Yoder is doing all
he can to help raise the money and send every penny recelved
on to Pofand for the cornpleti-on of his mlssion.
They have recently purchased a property in ttre city of Kolo,
Poland, whlch is no,; being renovated for church use. They
have four churches to go to reach the goal of 50 [now 57].
Yoder would like to complete one church per year.
Other aspects of Yoder's life are similarly interesting.

first whi-te settlers in western F\:lton County. He collects
hj-storical artifacts of F\rlton Cor:nty and is involved with
the Historical Society.
His_father, Ioran Yoder, was sheriff for 12 years in F\llton
County. Loran and Vera raised eight chiJ-dren: four boys and
four girls. I-owell, was the oldest.
He was raised in the Mennonite Church and always dreamed of
becoming a missionary. Yoder attended a one-rocxn school in
Ottokee until the third grade, when the students went to
Wauseon,
After grraduating from Wauseon, he went to nredj_cal school but
had to drop out in 1951 because of a bone disease which temporarily
put him in a wheel chair.
Sj-nce he had some business, accounting and typing classes
in college, he decided to find a job in business. He fooked
extensively, but was turned do,rn repeatedly because of hls
handicap.
Eventuaily, Yoder found work with Ray Carlson, who was 1n
the metal-working business. Yoder earned $40 a week.
That was where he nret his wife lr4aril-yn. They have raised
thrree sons and two daughters of their own- By 1958, the Yoder's
had started thej-r crvrn family business of buying and selling
metal-working nachines .
On March J_f, 1961 Lolvelt Yoder's Iife changed again. He
suffered a heart attack.
His religious experience at that time led a totaf change in
his life, whj-ch opened the way for his missionary work' He
Yoder is a co-founder of FOHO, an organization which v'ras part
of the VISA prograrn. Through FOHO' Yoder has seen the buildlng
of over 50 lnow 70] churches in Haiti.
He has also brought a great many medical supplies to the people
of Haiti. Ttrey also sponsor a radio statlon to bring Grristian
music to Haiti's peoPle.
Yoder's organizations have brought medicaf supplies to other
countries as welf. Dorninican Republic, Guatamala, El Salvadort
and Poland. Yoder explains that these countries don't even
have aspirin available for its people, Iet alone antibiotj-cs.
He enloys sharing a story of how he was not allonred to take

DEATH OF RICHARD J YOTHERS
NOTED FAMILY HISTORTAN
It is with great sadness thaL we announce the
passing of Richard James Yothers, Jt, official
historian of the Yothers farnilv. Richard \.ras
stricken suddenly with a heart attick Feb 16, L99L
while shopping in downtown Boston.
Richard, 42, \ras the son of the late Richard J
Yothers Sr and Ruth Landis Yothers. He was born in
Doylestown, PA and was a rnember the Deep River
Mennonite Church East of Bedminster,pA.
In L984, Richard published DESCENDANTS OF JACOB
YOTHERS BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA which he had
conpiled after rnany years of research. This
excellent book covers the rnajor line of descent
from Mennonite Yoder inrnigrant Hans Joder of Great
Swarnp (see YNL #3) which changed the spelting of
their name to Yothers. It can be considered the
rnost cornplete and important work to date on the
Mennonite branch of the Yoder farnily.
He also did extensive investlgation on the
descendants of Daniel Yothers (cl_775-L853) of
Center Co, PA whose ancestry has yet to be
established. In a future YNL, t/e would hope to
provide an article based on these investigations.
Richard was an early supporter of the yNL and
shared freely the results of his research, both by
letter
Richard J. Yothers Jr.
and by frequent phone caI1s. He was a
serious and avid student of our farnily's history,
and the loss of his energy and dedication, as well
as his friendship, will leave a heartfelt void.
