Dear Sir/Madam,
It is our great pleasure to present you the 1st European Media Sailing Race which will take place
on 14th and 15th June 2013 in Rijeka, the largest Croatia's port and a city of rich maritime tradition,
on the occasion of celebrating Croatia’s accession to full membership of the European Union
scheduled fifteen days later.
Rijeka and its port will again become a meeting place of numerous domestic and foreign sailors, as
well as of media representatives at the 14th international sailing event "Fiumanka", which
every year gathers up to 200 sailing boats in the northernmost Adriatic bay along with up to almost
two thousand sailors. The “Fiumanka” is moreover a celebration of sails, not just for people in
Rijeka but in all Croatia, with a motto: You have a boat, you have a sail, participate!
Over the years the Fiumanka Regatta has gathered a growing number of journalists who participate
in its competitive part. During two days, the journalists temporarily set aside their keyboards and
cameras and replace them with sails and ropes, and instead of mostly bad news, the only news they
follow is the weather forecast. This year, as a part of the Fiumanka Regatta, for the first time the 1st
European Media Sailing Race will take place, and we believe that you will take part in its first
edition and thus celebrate with us Croatian’s membership to the European community. The
organizers of the regatta and your hosts are Agencija 2. mjesto, the City of Rijeka and the Croatian
Radiotelevision. EMSR is our opportunity to pass with sails the message about Croatia to the EU
citizens. For Croatia, sailing is much more than pure sports and competition, ships and sails. It is a
part of us, and our identity, and even our invaluable wealth of the national tangible and intangible
heritage relies on it.
EMSR is designed as a two‐day sailing and socializing event. The ones who can participate at the
regatta are media representatives, members of the European Broadcasting Union ‐ EBU who will
also represent the country they come from. Participation at the regatta is free of charge, and the
organizers provide free sailing boats to all registered media crews. However, instead of a
participation fee, the participants are welcome to publish news about the event or broadcast a
promotional story about the regatta and the event location.
We believe that you will now make a decision to be a part of this sailing and media spectacle in mid‐
June 2013, which will also be accompanied by the Fiumanka EU Expo on the Rijeka waterfront. At
the fair, EMSR participating countries, through their Tourist Boards, will get the opportunity to
present their uniqueness to the citizens of Rijeka and Croatia.

Info about the race organization:
The organizers will provide to all applied crews sailing boats 10 to 13 meters in length. The
sailboats have the capacity to accommodate up to 6 people, a kitchen and a toilet. If due to a larger
number of applied crews the organizer will not be able to provide the same type of the sailing boat
(monotypes), the competition will be scored according to compensated sailing times by ORC
International ‐ scoring system. Along with a minimal number of crew members, which is 5 (five)
persons on board, a maximum of two crew members (sailors) who are not employees of the media
companies can participate. The maximum number of crew members is 8 (eight) persons. They must
have at least one member who holds a valid license for operating sailing boats up to 13 meters in
length.
After the completion of registration and no later than 1 June 2013, the race draw will be organized
by the regatta participants.
The race is scheduled on Friday 14the June 2013. Three races are scheduled in a triangle or W‐ L
course in front of the port of Rijeka and the third, navigational sailing race on Saturday 15th June as
a part of the international regatta Fiumanka. The start of the first race is scheduled on Friday 14
June 2013 at 11:00. For the overall title and the regatta interim cup both days will be scored.
In addition to providing the sailing boats, the organizers will provide to all crews free of charge the
following:
exposing media logos on the hull and the main sail
reception party on Friday and Saturday after the race for all crew members
transfer from airport to hotel
T‐shirts for all crew members
Note: The organizer does not cover the costs of hotel accommodation, professional skipper services as well as
possible damage to the boat caused by negligence or improper conduct of the crew

The first Fiumanka set sails in 2000 in honor of the patron of the City of Rijeka, St. Vitus. That is the very reason why the
regatta is always held on the second weekend in June. In its first edition with 114 boats, the Fiumanka gathered
unprecedented number of participants at a national regatta. Although it is no longer the largest, due to its special
approach to the organization, from a one‐day regatta, the Fiumanka has developed into a respectable sports event,
recognized even outside the Croatian borders. The Fiumanka is entirely free for sailors and visitors.
