current job in a year,” 69 while a Right Management survey found that “84 percent of U.S.<br />
employees p<strong>la</strong>n to look for new jobs in 2011 – up from 60 percent a year ago.” 70<br />
Summary<br />
Given the CF’s small ‘mid-level’ cohort, the CF’s pool of future comman<strong>de</strong>rs and<br />
key senior staff members is much smaller than the CF of the past or the present, so it is<br />
“imperative that attrition here be kept as low as possible.” 71<br />
The CF must retain as many<br />
of its best people as possible to ensure proper <strong>de</strong>pth of knowledge and experience to lead<br />
the <strong>Forces</strong> in future. Failure to do this will p<strong>la</strong>ce younger, less experienced lea<strong>de</strong>rs in<br />
positions ahead of their time. For example, Britain’s 19.1 million ol<strong>de</strong>r, long-service<br />
workers will be rep<strong>la</strong>ced by only 1.2 million mid-generation workers, meaning “…9.7<br />
million [short service] members ‘will be pushed faster into more high-powered jobs to fill<br />
this skills shortage.’” 72<br />
Some will rise to the occasion, but many will <strong>la</strong>ck <strong>de</strong>pth and<br />
experience, which could have adverse consequences for the <strong>Forces</strong> as a whole – mistakes<br />
ma<strong>de</strong> in a military situation by improperly experienced senior lea<strong>de</strong>rs can have lethal and<br />
