A Message from Tom Brokaw Winston and Lord Emily Holland 22 In their role as co-chairs of the IRC Overseers, NBC News correspondent Tom Brokaw and former U.S. ambassador to China Winston Lord have visited IRC staff and programs around the world. They are tireless advocates for refugees and the displaced. In this special message, they describe the IRC’s global mission and look ahead to future challenges.
Richard Falco The International Rescue Committee serves the world’s uprooted people on a variety of fronts. We deliver lifesaving aid in humanitarian crises, as we currently are doing in Darfur and Chad. After the conflict ends, as it has in Liberia or Bosnia, we help people rebuild their lives and their communities. Indeed, when it comes to serving populations in conflict-affected regions, the IRC is usually among the first in and the last out; we stay as long as we are needed. Thus we have been working with Afghan refugees in Pakistan since 1980, with internally displaced people in Sudan since 1981, and with various refugee groups in Thailand since 1976. Sadly, many refugees will never be able to go home. For those among them who qualify for resettlement in the United States, we offer a helping hand in their new communities as they restart their lives. Even though they arrive with little more than the clothes on their back, over the years these newcomers have built a marvelous record of success in their adopted country. And in so doing, they have enriched America. We also aid refugees by giving voice to their cause in Washington and other world capitals, at the United Nations and in the world’s news media. We rally international support for displaced populations such as the 2 million refugees from Iraq who have fled to neighboring countries or the 1.8 million people forced from their homes inside northern Uganda. The IRC has been speaking out on such causes since its founding in 1933. We hope you will take time as you read the program summaries that follow to get a sense of the breadth and scope of our programs around the world and in the United States, and to note the priority issues on which we are focusing our advocacy. Please take the chance as well to learn about some of the most outstanding members of our field staff–men and women who were presented with the Sarlo Distinguished Humanitarian Award in recognition of their achievements on behalf of refugees. And note, too, in the pages that follow, the institutions and individuals whose generosity makes possible the work described in this report. In our travels to IRC program locations in the United States and around the world, we are continually struck by the courage, resilience, and determination displayed by the refugees we meet. Their aspiring is truly inspiring. In the face of tough odds, they are determined not merely to survive, but to thrive —to regain their independence, their self-reliance and their freedom and to make life better for their children. We are honored to join our donors and staff in helping to broaden their horizons.
