Avoid housing young people outside the region, away from social support networks, education and work. Ensure a proportion of new development in the area includes low cost housing – this housing should be well integrated with transport, education, retail and services as residents are likely to rely more heavily on community resources. Health Explore the possibility of coordinated administrative support for youth services funding. The two services participating in this project revealed difficulties applying for relevant funding due to a lack of human resources. Facilitate a relationship between various health and social services with youth organisations, including sporting clubs and schools Justice Facilitate preventative programs that address social exclusion, poverty and disadvantage. Examine the level of access disengaged/ disadvantaged young people have to developmentally appropriate activities. Facilitate increased access to these activities. Foster mutually respectful relationships between police and young people (especially with young people who have frequent contact with police). Transport Address inadequate local public transport issues. Transport between towns in the Mt Barker region needs to reflect the travel needs of young people. There needs to be increased or better timed services that facilitate mobility on week day afternoons and on the weekend. Consider a regular Sunday market in Gawler street that includes stalls for young people and runs into the afternoon (this would also encourage Sunday trading for local cafes and shops) Support busking in Mt Barker and other towns Support local music and arts events that provide an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents Social interaction Provide appropriate amenity for young people to hang out. It is important to acknowledge that a single amenity will not cater to the diversity of young people in the area. Facilitate the inclusion of appropriate youth areas at existing amenities such as the library, cinema and Mountain Pool. Encourage intergenerational interaction through all of community events like the ‘Big Lounge’, the already successful Christmas carols and a local market. Retail Consider subsidising the rent of particular enterprises including cultural and artistic ventures, second hand or charitable retail that would appeal to young people and create a more interesting street experience for the community. Encourage retail that caters to the consumption needs and desires of young people. Such retail also creates work opportunities for young people Social inclusion and citizenship Actively consider the participation and inclusion of young people in community events Provide regular opportunities for young people to have a say, to be informed and to interact with each other and other members of the community Create a local internet portal for young people. Include weekly event and gig guide, communication forum for different groups and topics, information about youth services, local events, job vacancies, opportunities for work experience and training, community education, youth initiative etc Act on consultations with young people – take them seriously Living in the Mt Barker Council District Protect and enhance those characteristics of the district that young people (and others) value the most. 46 Needs assessment of young people in the Mt Barker Council District – November 2009
