iRobot ® Seaglider TM
Robots, accessories, upgrades and training courses
The iRobot ® Seaglider TM unmanned underwater
vehicle (UUV) is revolutionizing ocean data
collection. An autonomous UUV, Seaglider
performs physical, chemical and biological
oceanography, persistent surveillance, marine
environmental monitoring and a variety of
other subsurface missions.
In a range of ocean environments around
the world, Seaglider has proven its worth as a
cost-effective tool for long-term data collection
in hard-to-access locations. Seaglider performs
extended data-gathering missions that last many
months and cover thousands of miles. Seaglider
performs data-gathering missions in all sea
states, regardless of surface conditions. Seaglider
performs continuous data-gathering missions
in both the littoral zone and open ocean without
the need for reconfiguration.
Seaglider UUVs have been delivered to
oceanographers, maritime researchers and
military planners at government and research
institutions worldwide.
Testimonial
The benefits of using Seaglider under the polar ice caps
“While ships are great to work on, they’re incredibly expensive. For example, the ice-breakers that we
would need to get this kind of data cost well over $50,000 each day. The next level of science will be
done using autonomous vehicles. Quite simply, they can work in conditions ships cannot. They don’t
care about rough waves, they don’t get seasick, they don’t care about hurricanes. Oil spill Put it in.
Hurricane Put it in. Seagliders will work for you tirelessly for a very long time. Having these tools
is helping lead oceanographic research.”
Sensors
Sea-Bird Glider Payload Conductivity,
Temperature and Depth (GPCTD)
The Glider Payload CTD (GPCTD) is derived from
the measurement circuits and sensors used on a
Sea-Bird Argo float CTD. Designed specifically for
use on gliders, the GPCTD measures conductivity,
temperature and pressure, providing higher data
collection rates at greater accuracy than the
free-flow CTD.
Part # 4292639
Sea-Bird CT Sail
The CT Sail is a free-flow conductivity and
temperature sensor designed for use on
Seaglider. When combined with the data from
Seaglider’s on-board pressure sensor, it provides
a low power way to obtain accurate and reliable
salinity and density measurements.

Seaglider Development
Making a difference with ongoing development
The iRobot 1KA Seaglider is expanding Monitoring during oil spills
state-of-the art UUV technology and Seaglider was deployed to collect data in
the Gulf of Mexico for five months in 2010, after
performing critical environmental missions.
the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.
Equipped with CTD, DO, and CDOM sensors,
the Seaglider monitored the temperature,
Seaglider’s modular architecture
salinity, density, dissolved oxygen and possible
accommodates a wide variety of sensors oil clouds in the vicinity of the Macondo Well
Seaglider Development
and payloads, enabling a broad range of
missions. To meet the ever-evolving needs
of ocean monitoring, Seaglider is continually
integrated with proprietary and third-party
innovative technology solutions, including
the recent addition of capabilities to monitor
sub-surface oil and detect
waterborne radiation.
site. Seaglider was used to locate and monitor
large clouds of dispersed oil droplets more than
2,000 feet below the surface of the water.
With Seaglider, researchers were able to
collect data at depths not easily achieved using
traditional surface platforms and other UUVs.
Detecting waterborne radiation
Seaglider performs advanced waterborne
radiological isotope identification. As part of
a pilot program, Seaglider has been equipped
with an integrated scintillation detector that
identifies, measures and reports a range of
For information about these and other prototype
integrations, contact iRobot.
radiological samples in ocean water. With these
critical nuclear detection capabilities, Seaglider
can be deployed to help monitor radiation
in the world’s oceans.
