What we do:
Support Group Meetings: Pregnancy and infant
loss is not a topic that is openly talked about in
our society leaving women to grieve in silence.
We believe that a loss is a loss no matter when
or how you lost your little one. Share’s Caring
Hearts will start hosting pregnancy and infant
loss support group meetings in August 2012.
These meetings will be held at the Aldrich Library
on the first Monday night of each month
from 6-8PM. Please contact Ariel Darby if you
need more information. There is no fee to attend.
Doula Services: A Doula is someone who helps
to support a woman and her partner during labor.
She encourages the woman throughout her
birth and helps partners to communicate with
each other during this very special time. Ariel
will be CAPPA Certified in 2012-2013. The fee
will be $500 and is donated back to support
Share’s Caring Hearts and bereaved families.
Loss Doula Services: If you or someone you
know has received news that you are unable to
keep your baby and would like support, we are
just a call away. We will help you during your
birth or procedure. These services are free of
charge.
Yearly Memory Walks: October is Pregnancy
and Infant Loss Awareness month. We will walk
in memory of our babies. Watch for advertisements
about our date, time, and location for
2012!
Fundraisers: Share’s Caring Hearts will be seen
in the community fundraising for our cause and
to raise awareness. All proceeds go to purchase
memory boxes for grieving families
How you can help:
Share’s Caring Hearts is a non-‐profit organization
and our work is important to us to help raise
community awareness for pregnancy and infant
loss. At a time when the world stops for these
families, we guide families out of the darkness of
sadness and lift them up during their grieving
process.
We greatly accept donations, these are tax
deductible.
Spread the word about our program
Consider hiring us to be your labor doula to
support our cause
If you are a business owner and would like
to help us organize a fundraising event,
please let us know! This requires letting us
set up a Share’s Caring Hearts booth at
your location. We will advertise in local
newspapers, and in return, we ask that you
donate a percentage of your proceeds to
our organization for that day.
What we do:
The mission of Share Pregnancy and Infant
a supportive role.
Share’s Caring Hearts
Share’s Caring Hearts
was founded by
Ariel Darby.
Share’s Caring Hearts was founded by Ariel
Darby. She grew up in Fair Haven, Vermont.
She had her first son Ashton in 2000. In April of
2003, Ariel had her first miscarriage. A year later
her daughter Hannah was born. That same year,
motherhood took a hard turn for Ariel when at
the age of 3 1/2, Ashton was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy
and Addison’s Disease. Adrenoleukodystrophy
is a rare disease that presents
itself in either childhood (birth to 10 with
death resulting) or any time after age 10 and
into adulthood (mobility issues, incontinence,
memory loss, blindness, etc.) There is no way of
knowing which form of the disease will occur or
when the disease will present itself. The x-linked
disease brings a 50/50 percent chance of passing
the disease with each pregnancy. Female carriers
develop symptoms of the disease later in adulthood
but have a good prognosis.
Ashton was immediately enrolled into a case
study in Baltimore, MD to help his family find
support and information about the disease. The
family worked with Kennedy Krieger Institute
to map out their family’s mutation for future
family planning. The family welcomed Olivia in
2007. In July of 2009 Ariel had an unexpected
pregnancy and miscarriage. This brought about
maternal feelings of trying for another child.
The family longed for a healthy baby boy, a 25%
chance with each pregnancy. Ariel fought several
denials from their insurance company for
in vitro, trying to educate the company and in
hopes of them granting the use of in vitro, the
only way to ensure conceiving a healthy son.
Praying for the best, Ariel and Ryan tried for
another baby and were very excited to hear they
conceived, Brett Nathaniel. The next day more
news came that the baby boy they so wanted
had ALD. Devastated and knowing it would
mean worrying every day about how long they
would be able to keep him too, Ariel had to
make the decision no mother wants to make, to
terminate the pregnancy. They will forever miss
the baby boy they saw only a week before on the
ultrasound.
With good news around the corner, May of
2010 brought a new prognosis for Ashton.
They were told that the doctors believed that
Ashton would live and not have the childhood
form of the disease. It was a sigh of relief after
not knowing what would happen from day to
day since his diagnosis 7 years prior. They are
thankful for Ashton’s life but know that many
other boys in the same case study were not
so lucky. Looking forward, there is no way of
knowing when and how the later form of the
disease will present itself in Ashton in the years
to come.
In the fall of 2010, Darby’s received news
that their dreams and prayers of conceiving a
healthy son had been answered. Lucas Nathaniel
arrived March 29th, 2011. He is healthy and
perfect, their rainbow baby – a true miracle.
After serving on the board for another pregnancy
and infant loss support group, Ariel has
now started her own group in Central Vermont
to bridge the gaps between the two other Share
chapters in Vermont. She hopes to offer encouragement
to other families who have suffered
loss, no matter when or how their babies were
lost.
