n Teaching Teachers The School of Education received a content mentoring of mathematics and science teachers’ contract through a National Science Foundation grant in collaboration with Guilford County Schools. This mentoring program involved the entire campus with faculty from all schools and colleges. n Attention to Retention The College of Engineering faculty and staff started the AggiEMentor program that is aimed at improving the retention of engineering students. AggiEMentor blocks scheduling for freshmen during their first two semesters on campus. It is also a virtual mentoring program that allows freshmen to communicate with N.C. A&T alumni through email. n FIRST LEGO The College of Engineering sponsored the Inaugural N.C. Junior FIRST LEGO League Tournament and the N.C. State Tournament for the FIRST LEGO League. Forty teams competed in this year’s state tournament. n Wireless Nurses All senior nursing majors received financial support for standardized testing in their senior level courses, Nursing 512 and Nursing 518. In addition, wireless supported personal data appliances (PDAs) with a preloaded pharmacology textbook were provided for junior students (rising seniors) and faculty for a two-year period. This program will be expanded to include the rising junior nursing majors admitted to the upper division. n Excellent Teacher Associate professor of biology Mary A. Smith was one of 16 winners of the 13th Annual Awards for Excellence in Teaching, given by The University of North Carolina Board of Governors. Each recipient, nominated by special committees on their home campuses and selected by the Board of Governors Committee on Personnel and Tenure, received a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize. Dr. Smith believes that excellence in teaching requires ongoing professional development, a commitment to developing students as independent learners, and a focus on building a student-centered learning environment. Recognized by her colleagues as an “innovator in classroom instruction,” she is continually seeking out effective approaches to motivate and engage students in learning science. Smith regularly leads summer studentfaculty research teams at venues such as the Argonne National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, exposing her students to cutting edge technology while developing their research confidence. She has been a professor at N.C. A&T since 1995. n Behind the Scene Students and faculty in the Department of Graphic Communication Systems and Technological Studies, School of Technology, designed the commencement backdrop that was unveiled at the spring 2007 commencement exercise. n University Studies University Studies (UNST) successfully implemented the foundation courses for the new general education core curriculum. The program has received national and regional attention, having been featured in the January 2006 annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges and Universities along with Butler University of Indiana as a national model of general education curriculum reform. In December 2006, UNST representatives presented the curriculum at the meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). n Information Central Bluford Library offers a dynamic learning environment that remains focused on its mission to support the research and educational efforts of its faculty, staff, and students. Learner-centered services and collaboration dominate the library’s activities. In 2006-2007, the library partnered with the Center for Student Success and University Studies to ensure that students are information literate, and partnerships with faculty helped strengthen the collection through the addition of over 25,000 monographs, 12,000 e-books, and 40,000 federal and state documents. In addition, overall research transactions increased, with the majority of that growth attributed to remote usage and hits to the online databases. N.C. A&T State University Chancellor’s Report 2007
