Who Is at Risk of Dropping Out
• Students in large cities are twice as likely to leave
school before graduating than non‐urban youth.
• More than one in four Hispanic youth drop out, and
nearly half leave by the eighth grade
• Hispanics are twice as likely as African Americans to
drop out. White and Asian American students are
least likely to drop out.
• More than half the students who drop out leave by
the tenth grade, 20% quit by the eighth ihhgrade, and
3% drop out by the fourth grade.

Dropouts listed both school
problems and personal factors as
reasons for dropping out.

• Didn't like school in general or the school they
were attending.
• Were failing, getting poor grades, or couldn't
keep up with school work.
• Didn't get along with teachers and/or
students.
• Had disciplinary problems, were suspended,
or expelled

• Didn't feel safe in school.
• Got a job, hd had a family to support, or hd had
trouble managing both school and work.
• Got married, got pregnant, or became a
parent.
• Had a drug or alcohol problem.

But there’s other factors too…
• Didn’t pass TAKS (one or more tests)
• No personalization and rapport with adults
• Tracked…”this student is NOT college
material”
• Low expectations – not enrolled in college
prep classes
• Options not available
– AP, ECHS, STEM

Not all STEM fields are dominated by men.
• Many STEM fields have an even mix of men
and women.
• Others have more women than men.
– Database administrators are 37 percent women.
– Biological scientists are 46 percent women.
– Accountants and auditors are 60 percent women.
– Clinical laboratory technologists are 78 percent
women.
– Registered nurses are 91 percent women.

Community Colleges - Primary providers of
Dual Credit courses since 1984
Over 100,000 students in Dual Credit courses
during the 2009-2010 year
Over 2,000 class sections in Fall 2009
serving approximately 900 ISDs and 1,200
high h schools

Advantages of Dual Credit
• Seamless transition from high school to college
• Greater likelihood of earning a high school diploma and
a college degree
• Reduced dcost of enrolling in higher h education courses
• Opportunity to access college facilities and resources
such as tutoring t services, computer labs lb and
counseling services

• Enhances skills required to be successful at
the collegiate level such as time management
skills, critical thinking skills, study skills and
following directions and procedures
• At Texas community colleges, the cost of
attendance is very reasonable
• Colleges partners with all public and private
high schools in their college service area, which
includes all of Hidalgo and Starr counties.
• Colleges in the RGV are currently partnering
with 25school districts at over 100 high school
sites delivering college academic courses to
qualified students t at no charge to them or their
parents.

• Over 40,000 students have transition through
the program and on to higher education
institutions with a good educational
foundation and a good start in their chosen
career.
19

For example… AT STC …
• Since its initiation in 1997, the dual enrollment program
has grown from 425 students in the fall of 1999, to a
remarkable kbl (over) )10,000000 dual enrollment student
population in the fall 2011 semester.
• Much of this success is attributed to the support and
commitment of the high school staff, counselors and
administration that have continued to look at ways to
open and provide access to student participation.
