STUDIES OF NEUTRON CROSS-SECTIONS IN VARIOUS MATERIALS BY
ACTIVATION METHOD
The contribution summarizes series of experiments devoted to studies of (n,xn) crosssections
by activation method. The activation samples are used to measure neutron fields produced
during accelerator driven system studies. The threshold (n,xn) reactions are used but experimental
cross-section data of such reactions are mostly not available for neutron energies above 30 MeV. We
focused from this reason on suitable activation materials (Al, Au, Bi, I, In Ta, Y) which are
commonly used for such purposes. The cross-sections of various (n,xn) threshold reactions were
studied by means of different quasi mono-energetic neutron sources based on proton reaction on 7Li
target.
HIGH-ENERGY FISSION OF THE URANIUM SAMPLES AT THE QUINTA TARGET
Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS) represent a conceivable candidate for future nuclear
energy systems. Since these systems are designed to operate in the high-energy neutron spectra
region, they can not only considerably increase the efficiency of the natural uranium reserves
utilization, but also they are to be used for transmutation of nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel
elements released by the currently operating nuclear power plants. The international collaboration
“Energy and Transmutation of Radioactive Waste” (E&T-RAW) performed a continuous series of
experiments with the massive uranium target at the JINR Nuclotron accelerator. The experimental
study of high-energy fission of the uranium isotopes at the QUINTA target represents a noteworthy
contribution to the contemporary research in the field of ADS-based systems. Some experimental
results are outlined in this contribution.
