Walking around this beautiful campus, one is 

able to see the many things that set Harding apart 

from every other universiry. Aside from the friendly 

faces that we encounter every day, we are surrounded 

by many unique opportunities that are not found 

anywhere else. 

Attending chapel, involving ourselves in social clubs, 

intramural sports and the countless academic clubs and 

societies that are available to us are just a few of the ways we 

can get involved and grow close to one another. 

In addition to the extra-curricular activities that Harding 

provides for us, our classes are also different. With a faculry 

and staff that genuinely cares for the students, it is difficult not 

to appreciate and follow the examples that these incredibly 

gifted Christian leaders set for us. 

While the years go on, the intent of Harding will continue in the 

ideals on which it was founded. This Universiry will always stand 

apart from others in its effort to teach young men and women to 

share the word of God. As we grow older and face the challenges of 

the real world, we will forever look back on our years here and embrace 

the love and encouragement that met us at Harding.

outside the student center for a group 

pharo. Along with the busy schedules of 

being a senior at Harding, these students 

rook extra time to lead their fellow gradu~ 

ates~[Q~be throughout the 1999~2000 

school year. Along with helping the StUdent 

Association (S.A.) with many service 

projeclS during the year, including Rudolph 

to Romania and the hurricane relief, this 

group of leaders plann ed several treats for 

the student body. For instance, the seniors 

were in charge of the Christmas lights 

glowing on campus during the winter 

s~son that many were able to enjoy. 

These officers also headed a program this 

spring that helped collect and send Bibles 

to China. Al th ough the officers led the 

se nior class in a successful year, it was the 

first time most of them had been in~ 

valved in the S.A.

W ith soccer's recent growth in populariry 

wirhin the United States, many 

studenrs showed an interesr in the 

sporr this year. In fa ct, the Lady Biso 

n soccer ream received tremendous 

supporr from srudenr fans and were 

honored with the fourrh largest anendance 

average at a female soccer gam e 

in the Lone Star Conference (LSC). 

According to Coach Terry Edwards, 

because of the amounr of fan supporr 

(he team received this year, plans for 

improving the field for nex t year are 

currently in the works. One of the 

improvements sched uled to be made 

is 'the construcrion of additional seating 

around the field in order for more 

fans to be able to sit and watch the 

games. In addirion to the women's 

team, Harding will launch a program 

for an intercollegiHe men's soccer 

team nexr year.

teams during their meet on campus 

las t fall. This marked the fi rst 

year in many that a cross country 

meet was held on Harding's campus. 

In order to gain suppOrt for the meet, 

the Studenr Association (S .A.) offered 

fans the opportunity to participate in 

a pancake breakfast before the meet 

began. Whether for foo tball, basketball, 

baseball , soccer or track, Harding 

sports fans were known for the 

support and dedication they showed 

to all Biso n tea ms. In fact, over the 

last tWO yea rs, Harding has built a 

reputa ti on for having some of the 

loudest and crazies t basketball fans in 

the Lo ne Star Conference (LSC). 

Known as the "Rh odes Rowdies," students 

attending the Bison basketball 

games made sure the opponenr knew 

who's court they were on by cheering 

for both the Bisons and Lady Bisons 

during the season.

students were even out of their beds. 

The commuringsrudenrs came from 

locations as close by as Kensen and as 

far away as Little Rock. T o examine the 

advantages a nd disadvantages o f 

commuting, several students were asked 

(Q share thei r opinions of the travel. 

"The drive from Li ttle Rock can be 

painstaking at times, but it's worth the 

money that I save by commuting," Jeff 

Campbell, junior, said. 

Students, some of which had hour 

long drives ahead of them, found it 

nearly impossible to return home during 

school hours. "I have (Q stay on campus 

all day depending if! have a night class," 

Silvano Titto(Q, graduate student, said. "I 

find it hard to relax during a long day." 

Many students who commuted did 

not have such arduous drives ahead of 

them. Students li ke Erica McD aniel, 

senior from Kensett, Ark., were able to 

go home throughout the course of the 

day ro eat or just ro relax. 

"It's a shorr drive, so I'm able to 

come home for lunch between classes," 

McD aniel said. 

Some may wonder how these 

commuting students made those long 

trips every morning. "I enjoy the drive 

in the early morning; it prepares me fo r

Jay Larso n, senior, leads the Thundering 

Herd marching band during the half-time 

ceremonies of a home football game. 

Larso n. a music major, has been the band's 

Drum Major si nce the fall of 1998. Not 

only did Larson lead the band during 

half-rime performances at football games 

and ar parades. he was also responsible 

for rh e overall appearance and 

maintenence of rh e band, irs members 

and their instruments. Larson has an 

impressive back ground in marching 

band performance, which led him to 

become a music major and later the 

leader of the Thunderin g Herd. As if 

being in charge of a band was not enough, 

Larson was also involved in a number of 

other activities, including assissting in 

th'~ Campus Ministryoffice with Dwight 

and Barbie Smith. This year the band 

also had a second drum major - Emily 

Smith, juni or music education major.

project in the curriculum lab. Many education students took 

advanrage of the supplies and marerials thar were available in the 

lab. While most of the resources were free to education majors, 

clubs could also use the materials for a small fee. 

On almost any given day, education 

majors can be found wcked away on the 

third floor of the American Swdies 

Building, busily working to complete 

their next big project. 

The area is the location of the 

curriculum lab, a second home to many 

education majors, where every resource 

for any bulletin board, poster or other 

visual is at their fingertips. 

Lab worker Christina Swindle, a 

senior elementary education major, 

described the lab as a "mini-library for 

education students." 

The lab offers everything ftom 

computers, scanners, color printers, 

copiers and laminawrs w an array of 

paper supplies and an extensive library. 

The lab is open seven days a week. 

Swindle estimates that more than 100 

people visit the lab on a daily basis. 

"It's kind of like a lounge because 

everyone comes through here, and we 

share ideas," Swindle said. 

"It's a great place to work," Ashley 

McQuay, a sophomore sp eech 

pathology major, said. "You can puc 

JUSt about anything together with the 

supplies up here." 

Other students also said their 

experience in the curriculum lab enabled 

them to be more familiar wi th 

equipment they will need to understand 

once they begin their careers. 

"Working here has definitely helped 

me in my classes," Kelly Simmons, a 

junior speech pathology major said. "I 

feel like I'm a step ahead because I know 

what's up here and how to work it. "

Dawn McCann and Robert Sebesta, junior 

members of the band living stones, 

entertain a crowd during the band's performance 

in [he Old Recordin g Studio 

lasr fall. The band, which performed a 

number of concerts durin g rhe year on 

campus and at Midnight Oil, released 

their first CD, "View from here," last 

yea r and have plans to make another 

album in the near future. According to 

McCann, Sebesta and fellow band member, 

Brandon Boneau, junior, write all 

of the music and lyri cs. The band is 

making plans to go on the road and tour 

several southern states in an effort to 

promote their current CD. "It is amaz. 

ing to see the progress the band has 

made in the past year," Boneau said. 

"We are excited about the possibilities 

[har are arising from [he release of our 

CD." Besides Boneau and Sebesta, the 

band co nsists of Ryan Crisler, drummer; 

Ray Rawl ey, bass player; Colleen 

O'Connell , viol inist; and Erin 

Rembleski, backup vocalist.

Endri Baduni, a freshman from Albania, rides a horse with the 

assistance of Dr. Tim Baird's son, Danny. Baduni stayed with 

the Baird fam ily over Thanksgiving break. 

Going home for Thanksgiving is a 

long awaited breakfrom classes. Students 

get the chance tQ escape the four walls of 

a dorm room and head to their home 

state. 

Butwhar ifforsome reason you weren't 

able ro go home No mom and dad. no 

left-over turkey, no comfortable bed. 

There are so me students who faced 

these questions concerning their holiday 

break. Forwhatever reason, they were nOt 

fortunate enough to go home fo r 

Thanksgiving. 

However, the Office of Residence Life 

helpd those students who were "homeless" 

for the week. The students left their name 

in the office in hopes that a fellow student 

or faculty member would be gracious 

enough to take them in. 

Tyler Madock, sophomore, and Endri 

Baduni, freshman, were [wo srudenrs who 

found themselves "homeless" for the 

holiday. 

"The main reason I couldn't go home 

is because I didn't have the money to fly 

back [Q San Diego," Madock said. 

Baduni also found that a plane ticket 

was too expensive for him to go home. 

"Being from Albania, I knew therewas 

no way I could afford to leave," he said. 

While these students could not go 

home for Thanksgiving, they were nOt 

"h'omeless." Endri lived with Dr. Jim

spent Thanksgiving wi th his girlfriend's 

family.

srudent's college career because it exhibits 

nOt only the artise's talent, but the years of 

work spent to compile what is for many 

their first professional art show. "It was 

one of the best educational experiences 

I have had at Harding," Malingsaid. "It 

really pushed me into developing my

through the center of campus. The front 

lawn was a major thoroughfare that encompassed 

a number of academic buildings 

and several dormitories. This area of 

campus offered srudents not only a place 

to social ize between classes, but had a 

number of other uses. On sunny days, 

students could be found studying in the 

shade, taking a nap, tanning in the sun or 

playing a game of ultimate frisbee on the 

grass. During January's snowfall , the 

lawn became a major gathering place 

for the building of snowmen , football 

games and coundess snowball fights. 

The lawn also provided a spot for organized 

events during the year including 

the Student Association's (S.A.) Watermelon 

Parry. (wo S .A. movies and 

the occasional Aramark picnic. T he 

lawn, as well as the rest of campus', was 

kept up by a number of groundskeepers 

throughout the year.

cl ubs' new members were upperclassmen this year. 

Pledging a club is a memorable 

experience that most students choose to 

have when [hey are freshmen. However, 

there are some students who decided to 

hold off on joining a club. 

Katie Rucker a junior who pledged 

Zeta Rho. was one of those students. "I 

decided not to pledge my freshman yea r 

because I know that is when all the clubs 

put on their best face for the freshman. 

I wanted to get to know the different 

clubs better and see what they were 

really all about," Rucker said. 

Women wefe nOt the only 

upperclass men who joined in on [he 

pledge fun. Shannon Powell is a fifth 

year senior who pledged Sub-T16. "I 

didn't pledge as a freshmen because I 

wasn't here. Powell said. "I transferred 

here from Freed H ardman when I was a 

junlOr." 

When upperclassmen pledged clubs 

with freshman, the age differe n ce was 

som etimes too difficult to overcome. Fo r 

freshman, the whole idea of pledge week 

was new and exciting. U pperclassman, 

however, just wamed to get it ove r with. 

There were advantages and disadvantages 

to the older pledges, according to Meredith 

Garrity, junior member ofKo Jo Kai.

desk worker Shawna Coulter, senior, on 

their way out to run errands. Many female 

students had the opportunity to make 

money during the year by working several 

hours each week at the front desks in girls 

dormitories. Desk workers kept busyduring 

their shift with various tasks including, 

answering the phone, signing guests 

in and out and other general office duties. 

However, when the work load was nOt 

so heavy, students found working the 

desk gave them a chance to make money 

while catching up on their homework. 

Any female student could apply to be a 

desk worker, but residential assistants 

were allowed the option of choosing 

w4,ether or nOt to sit the desk at all. If 

they chose to be a desk worker, they 

then were given first dibs on the number 

of hours and time of day they wished to 

work. Of course, staying on task was nOt 

always easy when friends stopped by to 

chat.

For the 1999-2000 school year the junior 

class elected Deborah Bone, secrerary/treasurer; 

Rex Reeves, president; (nor pictured 

Steven Young, vice president; Jonathan 

Dismang, men's representative; Tia Tarole, 

women's representative). These five representatives 

and officers worked hard throughout 

the year. A lot of improvements were 

made (0 this year's Student Association in 

comparison (0 previous years, according to 

T arole. She said there was a larger sense of 

unity in the group and they set much bigger 

goals which in the end included a lor more 

people. "Just by go ing to the meetings I can 

teU how far we've come as a group. We are 

improving all of the time," Tarole said. 

"Brian Bush [S.A. president] is very organized 

and he has done so much for the 

student body." At the beginning of the year 

the class officers, representatives and S.A. 

officers attended a retreat at White County 

Medical Center to prepare for the upcoming 

school year. It gave the leaders a chance 

(0 bond as a group and plan for the new 

year. President David Burks, Terry Davis, 

assistant dean of students, Delores Carson, 

assistant vice president for student services, 

and Bush spoke about leadership. "The 

officers learned abour their individual leadersh 

ip styles as well as how to work with 

ochers who have different leadership styles," 

Davis said. "The retreat gave each of {he 

leaders an opportunity to learn how (0 handle 

the co ncerns of Harding's student body."

in the fa11 to be one of the hostess fo r 

the 2000 show along with Shelly Lawson, 

sophomore. Ben Howe, senior. and Joe 

Yale. jun ior. In addition, ten men and 

women were chosen to back the hosts and 

hostesses as an ensemble. Spring Sing was 

one of the biggest annual attractions at 

Harding. This year marked the 27th anniversary 

of the event. Appropriately to the 

new millennium, this year's theme was 

"Once in a Lifetime." Alo ng with the 

hosts, hostesses and ensemble. various social 

clubs also began putting their shows 

together early in the school year. Throughout 

the year, each of the competing groups 

of clubs were expected to meet deadlines 

for music, costumes and choreography in 

order to show progress well enough to be 

ready in time. Although preparation for 

the show began early first semester, regular 

practices did nOt commence until after 

Christmas break.

Romeo and Juliet. The show was directed by Mario Hofheinz, 

junior, and produced solely by studenrs. 

When the curtain rose on Harding's 

fall production ofWilliam Shakespeare's 

"Romeo and Juliet," it was a showcase 

for student theater productions. 

The entire play, from the on-stage 

talent to the technical workers, was 

brought to the stage by Harding 

U niversity students, according to Mario 

Hofheinz, director. 

"I am in awe of the cast and crew 

coming tOgether so successfully," he 

said. 

Hofheinz said he decided to do the 

play after seeing the movie "Shakespeare 

in Love." 

"When I read the play [Romeo and 

juliet], 1 saw a different way of viewing 

the whole script," he said. 

"1 wanted to do the script for its own 

sake and not for the legend it had 

become." 

Under Hofheinz's direction, Heidi 

Cox, senior, said she was able to bener 

explore her character, Lady Montague. 

"It was an oppon unity to create a 

character almost entirely because there 

was so little dialogue," she said. 

Bringing the play to the stage 

required commitment and long 

practices, according to Hofheinz. 

.' "I don't think 1 could be more proud 

of the people who made it happen," he 

said. "It turned out much greater than 1 

had hoped when 1 first began to conceive 

the idea."

the Srudent Association (S.A.) Open 

House, Nov. 4. Open House provided 

students the opportunity to visit the dorms 

and apartments of members of the opposite 

sex, according to Brian Bush, S.A. 

president. Marshall visited seniors' Elizabeth 

Hedley and Aimee Whitley's apartment 

in Searcy Hall. The S.A. held the 

event on designated nights each semester. 

On these occasions, women were allowed 

to be in the men's rooms from 6:30 p.m. 

until 8 p.m. Then, from 8 p.m. until 9:30 

p.m., {he men were permitted to see {he 

women's dorm rooms. These nigh{s gave 

srudents (he chance to show off their 

rooms to friends, watch television with 

th'~t special someone and hang OUt with 

each other in a comfortable setting. Because 

Open House usually only happened 

once a semester, most students said they 

took advantage of the opportunity to see 

how (he other side of campus lived.

service. The church's weekly attendance more than quadrupled 

as a result of students who visited regularly. 

For many Hardingstudents, Sunday 

mornings consisred of a short drive to a 

local con gregation where several 

hundred other students and local citizens 

attend on a weekly basis. 

However, for Alan Howell, junior. 

attending Sunday morning worship 

services at Griffithville C hurch of Christ 

meanr anything from organizing the 

Bible class to delivering a sermon. 

"Ir is a grear chance to get to know 

[he people of [he area," Howell said. "A 

lot of time worshiping in a larger 

congregation may seem JUSt like chapel. 

This is a change of pace and the 

opportunity to meer other people." 

Shannon Cooper, junior, has been 

mending [he Rosebud Church ofChrisr 

for rvvo years, and has enj oyed working 

with the local members. 

"At Rosebud, I gO t experience 

teaching, preaching and working with 

the whole congregation," Cooper said. 

W hen Coope r began attending 

Rosebud, the congregation maintained 

a steady attendan ce of about 30 

members. Three years later, m at number 

grew [0 about 100 people, with about 

60 students who attended.

peers. It is near to watch each ocher 

grow in such an intimate setting."

Bren Emerson and Courmey Gaylor, freshmen, take control 

during a weekly FIGHT meeting. FIGHT came into existence 

last year as a group of students wanted to begi n an organization 

thar focused on poetry and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ 

to others. 

Performing compositions written by 

members, FIGHT is a poetry group that 

was started last September by a small 

group ofHardihg students. 

Thinking it would be a good idea to 

have organized poetry readings to spread 

the gospel of]esus Christ, the group put 

up poscers ro encourage others to join 

their small ministry team. 

FIGHT is not an acronym, bur an 

aggressive word which best describes the 

wo rk of these individuals. 

FIGHT performs their poetry at 

schools, churches, devotionals, yo uth 

groups and any other place this delegation 

of vol unteers can be witnesses. 

Although they attend practice meetings 

weekly, the group does not always 

end up practicing their writing. 

According co Phillip Davis, sen ior 

FIGHT member, sometimes the small 

assemblyof15 jusrpraysrheenrire time. 

These practices and performances are 

also a time of personal growth for the 

members, according to Kimberlee Berg, 

senIor. 

"It makes me look at my relationship 

with God, to make sure that I'm living 

what I'm saying," Berg said. 

Besides having the opportunity to work 

with other Christians, the audience feedback 

seemed to be extremely positive. especially 

from college students. 

Since the poetry is written by their 

peers, students tend to relate to it better 

than any another age group. 

Lesley McKeever, sophomore, said that 

the audience's reaction is usually something 

to the effect of open-mouth asronishfl.)ent. 

"They can see [our sincerity] when they 

hear what we say," McKeever said. "It's like 

nothing they have ever heard before. 

Sometimes the poetry is spoken, sometimes 

shouted, sometimes sung, bur it is 

always filled with the deepest emotions the 

wri ter could possibly have. It is a little like 

drama and a little like poetry. according to 

McKeever. 

FIGHT is abou, what God has done in 

the lives of its members. It is about how 

much they love God and are amazed by 

God's daily miracles, Davis said.
