18 • MONDAY, JUNE 14, 2010 THE WATROUS MANITOU RCMP remind community of Internet scams The RCMP are reminding the public to use caution when conducting business over the Internet, especially when buying and selling items via online classified ad sites. There are several different types of mass marketing frauds in operation throughout the province, and the one most recently reported to have occurred in the Watrous area is termed an ‘Overpayment Scam’. This particular fraud is any incident involving a consumer selling merchandise or a service and receiving a payment in the form of a counterfeit cashier’s cheque, personal cheque or corporate cheque from the “purchaser” in an amount in excess of the amount owed. The seller is then asked to deposit the cheque and send the excess funds immediately back to the purchaser or the purchaser’s agent or shipper by way of a commercial money transfer service or a financial institution’s on-line banking money transfer service. Eventually the deposited cheque is subsequently returned as counterfeit and charged back to the seller’s account. “As with most cyber crimes, it relies on the ability of an offender to remain anonymous”, says Cst. Diduck of the Watrous Detachment. “The uses of false and stolen identities, as well as jurisdictional issues, all affect our ability to identify a suspect.” The RCMP recommends people educate themselves as to the different types of frauds so they are better able to protect themselves and their money. Fraudsters do not care about any of that - they just want your money. Add sifted dry ingredients and butterscotch chips. Drop by spoonfuls on the greased baking sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350˚F. Can be doubled. OBITUARY BAUML, Herbert Jacob (Herb) Herbert Bauml, aged 88 years, passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon on Friday, June 4, 2010 in the presence of family. Herb was born on November 21, 1921 in Humboldt, Sask. and grew up in Marysburg, playing and coaching baseball and hockey. He married Anne Musty in 1957. Herb operated the local general store in Marysburg until the fall of 1966 when the family moved to Watrous where Herb and Anne ran the local IGA food store until retirement in 1987. Golfing, cards and watching sports (especially those involving his grandchildren) were Herb’s favourite past times. Herb is survived by his loving wife Anne; their six children Kathy (Alan), Marlin (Karen), Marianne (Fraser), James (Bonnie), Brad (Jacky), Susan (Jeff); 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Gary (Serena) and sisters Hedy and Rose. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Katie along with brothers Danny and Jerome. Vigil for the deceased was held June 7 at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. Eulogy was given by Marianne Bauml-Murray, James Bauml and Brad Bauml. Jacky McArthur-Bauml was the reader. The Mass of the Christian Burial was held at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church on June 8 conducted by Father Joseph Choji and Father Les Paquin. Honourary pallbearers were Herb’s golf, curling, cribbage and coffee row friends. Collin Sather was urnbearer. Register attendants were Ivan and Janet Sookeroff and Kevin and Marg Harcourt. Earle Amendt Sr. and John Beattie were ushers. Readers were Kohl Bauml and Shaye Bauml. Bonnie Ullyott was organist and guitarist was Sylvia Dubeczy. John McArthur was soloist accompanied by Kathy Sather. Interment took place at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery in Marysburg. Memorial donations directed to Camp Easter Seal or Watrous Community Health Foundation would be appreciated. Fotheringham-McDougall Funeral Service of Watrous and Nokomis was in care of arrangements. DREGER, John (Johnny) John (Johnny) Dreger, aged 82 years, passed away at Watrous Union Hospital on Saturday, June 5, 2010. John was born October 25, 1927 in Watrous to Henry and Marie Dreger. John resided in Simpson for most of his life until his health started to fail. He moved to Mandal House in Watrous for a while and resided in Saskatoon for a few years before returning to Watrous to live in the Manitou Lodge where he resided at the time of his passing. John worked at various jobs in his life as a labourer. He was last employed at the Canadian Wildlife Service at Last Mountain Lake as a maintenance man. He enjoyed the outdoors, going for drives, playing crib and keeping his yard neat and tidy. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. John leaves to mourn: sisters Rosie, Aileen (Bob), Elsie and sisters-in-law Lydia and Lorna; brothers Eddie (Irene), Evolt, Vernie, Norman (Diana), Harold (Faye), all his special nieces and nephews and numerous other family members. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Marie; sisters Bertha, Edith, Dora, Margaret, Marlene, Helen; sister-in-law Irene; brothers Bill, Walter and Robert; brothers-in-law Steve, Harold, Ralph and Fred and nephews Ricky, Ronnie, Larry and Maynard. At John’s request there will be no funeral service. Cremation will take place and a private family interment at a later date. It was so nice to be able to sit and visit with friends and family after the service. We would like to give a special thanks to Murray Westby for so beautifully singing Mom’s favourite song In the Garden accompanied by the very talented Elva Turner. Thanks to Angel Blossoms for the beautiful flowers. It is so hard to make decisions at such a sad time, so thanks to Earl and Allan from Fotheringham’s for all your help. Mom was not able to go to church the past six months because of the stairs, so a big thanks to all who donated to the lift fund for the United Church.
