The grand total to be donated to cancer research was approximately $800! Wednesday was the annual awards night, featuring a group dance and Winston’s own Garage Band. Thursday, there was the year end school dance. Students danced not only to music from an iPod but also to live music played by Middle of Nowhere. U of R grads A number of students celebrated their graduation from the University of Regina at the institution’s 36th annual spring convocation June 9, 10 and 11 at the Conexus Arts Centre. Among the 1,712 people graduating were Jody Lynn Coffin of Colonsay, Bachelor of Social Work and Marlee Laurel Huebner of Imperial, Bachelor of Social Work. Playing made possible submitted by Frank Wilson, Watrous Rene Hopfner representing Safeway stores of Saskatchewan was on hand at Camp Easter Seal May 27 to advise her company's commitment of $80,000 for a full access playground at the camp. Saskatchewan Abilities Council CEO Ian Wilkinson was very pleased to accept the pledge as he spoke to the many Safeway representatives present and the camp's summer councillors. A large contingent from Safeway was on hand to begin sorting out and actually assembling sections of the playground equipment, which will add greatly to the campers’ experience this summer and at future camps. THE WATROUS MANITOU MONDAY, JUNE 14, 2010 • 3 From front page: BUDGET REPERCUSSIONS budget of $912.4 million last week, which included cost reduction targets and strategic investments. However, that also meant the region found itself with a $25.4 million shortfall. That is a result of a $12 million deficit from 2009-‘10 and a $10 million efficiency target from the Ministry of Health, which the region is expected to attain through operational efficiencies, shared services and reduction in sick time and overtime. The region is also looking to reduce operating costs by an extra $3.4 million to self-fund investments in areas such as quality, safety, population health and technology. To come up with that $25.4 million, targeted cost reduction initiatives of $15.2 million, attendance management (sick time/ overtime reduction) of $3.6 million, shared services of $1.7 million, and general efficiencies of $4.9 million will all be implemented. As for Watrous, and what the budget means to residents and workers, the region stated, “We are continuing with projects that were approved and funded prior to this fiscal year. This includes Humboldt District Health Complex, RUH ICU renovations, Calder Centre renovation and Manitou Lodge replacement. This year we have received zero new capital funding. However, we will look to other sources to fund capital investments including voice recognition, electronic health record and medication charts.” Changes are also being planned and some significant and minor service ones will be taking place. For example: in acute care, a 28-bed transitional care unit will close as Oliver Lodge opens, and 5,500 acute care patient days will be lessened through reduced admission and/or length of stay. For community services, home care, mental health and public health will be redesigned; the ambulance service will be examined; grants to third parties will be decreased, and the international travel clinic will be redesigned. In support areas, the region would like to align services to changes in acute and community; eliminate internal audit function (completed); extend computer life cycles from five years to seven, and automate accounts payable. Neufeld said no cuts are targeted at the moment for Watrous although 40 out-of-scope positions have been eliminated within the region and in-scope staffing changes are under discussion with the unions. The region said it knows that roles some individuals provide today will either change or no longer be needed. However, that does not necessarily mean people losing employment with the region. SHR will be looking at changing some staffing models where job classifications have put people under the same title with the same pay even though they are doing very different work. Other positions may see hours reduced as services are readjusted. Over 77 per cent of the costs in the budget are for staffing and Neufeld said they would like to work with staff and have a healthy workforce.
