Our Aims and Objectives
At South Hampstead High School, we strive to provide
an excellent academic education for all, fostering
individuality, creativity, intellectual rigour and enthusiasm.
In school, out of school and when they leave school, we
want pupils to have the courage to make a difference.
Each girl is encouraged to develop a sense of awareness
and responsibility and to show tolerance and respect for
the diverse cultures and traditions that we are proud to
have represented at South Hampstead High School.
Our motto is Mehr Licht.
The Girls’ Day School Trust
South Hampstead High School was the ninth school to
be established by the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST)
in 1876.
Today, the GDST is the leading network of independent
girls’ schools in the UK. A charity that owns and runs 24
schools and two academies, it reinvests all its income in
its schools.
Since its foundation in 1872, the GDST has been at the
forefront of education for girls and a strong voice in
promoting opportunities for young women. Through
the Alumnae Network, this continues after the girls
leave school.
The advantages of an all-girls education
The all-girl environment is special. It provides girls with
the opportunity to explore and succeed in a wide
variety of subjects and activities, through girl-centred
teaching strategies and the absence of social distractions
and stereotyping. As a result, our girls leave school with
confidence and courage.
Help finding the right school
Finding the right school for your daughter is one of
the most difficult decisions you’ll ever have to make.
We’re proud to support the Girls’ Schools Association
(GSA) and their website, mydaughter.co.uk. It’s a website
dedicated to raising girls and provides comprehensive
support and independent advice to parents searching
for the right school.
School Life
The curriculum
In keeping with the liberal tradition of the School, the
curriculum at South Hampstead is broad and balanced
with an emphasis on ‘active’ learning.
In the Junior School, studies are broadly based and
go well beyond the National Curriculum. The girls
are taught Music, Art, Modern Languages, Drama and
Physical Education by specialist staff.
The Junior School’s subject co-ordinators liaise closely
with the Heads of Department in the Senior School
to ensure progression and a smooth transition at
age eleven.
In the Senior School, we encourage each girl to
follow her own initiative and interests within a broad
framework of academic and creative studies.
In Year 7, all girls study Art, Design Technology, Classical
Civilisation, Critical Thinking, Drama, English, Geography,
History, one Modern Foreign Language, Information
Technology, Mathematics, Music, Personal Social and
Health Education (PSHE), Physical Education, Religious
Studies and all three Sciences which are taught as
discrete subjects. Each girl begins Latin and a second
Modern Language in Year 8.
At GCSE, the compulsory subjects are English, English
Literature, Geography or History, Mathematics, at least
one Modern Foreign Language, and three Separate
Sciences or Dual Award Science. Girls then choose
a further two or three options from a wide range of
over 10 subjects to suit their interests. These include:
Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Geography, Greek,
History, Latin, Music, a second Modern Foreign Language
and Religious Studies. It is also possible to work toward
the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).
More details of the subjects available to study
at A Level are available in a separate Sixth Form
Prospectus.
Beyond the curriculum
Music, drama, art and sport are the spirit and soul of
school life. Wherever you go at South Hampstead High
School, something is happening.
Musicians are encouraged from Reception. Most
girls take individual instrumental or singing lessons -
collectively, the girls play 14 different instruments. The
music programme is varied and provides something
for all levels of ability and musical taste with numerous
groups and ensembles. You can listen to our musicians
on SHHS Radio via our website.
Girls may take to the stage in one of many of the
School’s productions each year. Performances take
place in our theatre and cover a range of genres,
with some performances staged in a modern foreign
language. Those girls who don’t fancy the spotlight
can get involved behind the scenes writing, directing
or stage managing.
In art, girls are encouraged to experiment and take risks
while working within a fine arts background. Students
work with a range of media including textiles, sculpture
and time based media - photography, film making
and animation.
Design & Technology (DT) is varied and very hands-on.
Our older girls are regular award-winners in a number
of competitions such as Young Inventor of the Year,
Young Designer of the Year and Young Engineer of
the Year.
Evidence of the talent we have here is displayed all
around the school – paintings, sketches, photographs,
sculptures and even some of the furniture in the Senior
School reception was created by our students.
In sport, girls have the opportunity to participate in a
wide range of activities, both as part of a team and as
an individual, during regular lessons at our four-acre
sports ground and in the gymnasium, or as part of our
extra-curricular programme. We currently offer a total
of 17 different sports and in excess of 40 sporting
clubs across the Junior and Senior Schools. In the Senior
School, girls typically spend three hours a week in
Sport; in the Junior School, at least two hours. Specialist
coaches are used where appropriate. Our aim is to
cultivate a positive attitude towards recreational and
competitive sport, developing the skills and team spirit
needed for a lifetime enjoyment of sport.
Outside the classroom
We value the enrichment and self-discovery that
extra-curricular activities provide and encourage the
girls to get involved. There is something to suit all tastes
and we support the girls trying something they have
never done before.
Clubs and societies are held before school, after
school and during the lunch break. Lunchtime in the
Senior School is bursting with activity with over 50
clubs available each week - from Big Band to Foreign
Language Film; Creative Writing to Football;
Eco-Outdoors to Science Society. The Junior School
is equally busy with many extra-curricular options
available each day.
Day and residential trips (from Y4 onwards) provide
the girls with memorable experiences that support our
work in the classroom and expand understanding of
particular subjects, as well as promoting independence
and strengthening friendships. Locally, our girls visit
museums, galleries, theatres, concerts and attend
conferences. In the Senior School, recent trips further
afield have included an Art History trip to the museums
and galleries of Paris, Geography fieldwork in Iceland,
and a History trip to China. The more adventurous have
taken part in World Challenge expeditions to Costa
Rica, Nicaragua, Croatia and, the most ambitious to date,
Tanzania with the ascent of Kilimanjaro. Future trips are
planned to Romania and Nepal. Annual residential trips
in the Junior School include trips to York (Y4), Norfolk
(Y5) and Outward Bound (Y6).
which extend pupils’ understanding of, and respect for,
other cultures.
Many students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award scheme, helping people in our local community
as well as across the UK and abroad. On average 75%
of each year group achieve Bronze and most go on to
take Silver and Gold.
The school day
Junior School: Doors open at 8.25 and the school day
siblings in Years 3-6 can arrange to stay with their class
teacher until 15.30pm. Early club and homework clubs
are available at a small cost.
to be smart and comfortable. It’s also very recognisable
and the girls take pride in wearing their yellow shirt.
Girls in the Sixth Form do not wear a uniform.
Exchanges and home-stay visits are arranged for
every language in the Senior School, as well as work
experience abroad for the Sixth Form linguists, all of
The redevelopment of the Senior School
July 2012 marks the beginning of a two-year
redevelopment project at the Senior School on
Maresfield Gardens. We are terribly excited to be
working with Hopkins Architects on the project which
will transform the existing Victorian school building into
a modern learning environment and include: indoor and
outdoor sports courts; a green roof; state-of-the-art
classrooms; art, DT and music studios; a new library and
lecture hall. The new building will be ready for the start
of the autumn 2014 term.
During the project, Senior School life is based at a
transitional campus at our four-acre Sports Ground.
Built exclusively for SHHS and known as the
Cumberland Campus, the facilities on this site are
exceptional and include: fully equipped classrooms
with whiteboards and IT, a library, and on-site DT,
Art and Music Studios.
Senior School pupils spend the majority of their time at
the Cumberland Campus. Each year group spends one
day at Maresfield Garden utilising the specialist facilities,
which are not part of the refurbishment, for practical
science, drama and indoor sports.
Sixth Formers are well-catered for with a cafe and
common room at both Oakwood House and the
Cumberland Campus, and move between the two sites
depending on individual schedules.
Pastoral care
The wellbeing of each girl is at the centre of all we
do. Dedicated teachers work together to ensure each
individual is happy, develops confidence and self-esteem,
as well as tolerance and respect for others.
We provide a safe and supportive environment where
girls can learn from their mistakes and celebrate their
successes. The Junior School is a nurturing place where
girls are encouraged and rewarded with ‘positive praise’.
As girls get older, they take more responsibility for their
own learning and development. In the Senior School,
form tutors meet with each girl regularly to discuss
academic progress and personal issues. The quality
of the relationships between the staff and pupils is
something we are particularly proud of and helps to
create the friendly and sociable atmosphere that we
have here at South Hampstead.
Both the Junior and Senior schools have LDC
co-ordinators for girls with learning difficulties. The
co-ordinators liaise regularly with staff to ensure each
girl has the support she needs to succeed.
Peer support is developed and encouraged throughout
the School with networks such as the Big Sister scheme
at the Junior School, the House System and Peer
Support in the Senior School, and School Councils
in both schools.
In addition, each year group tackles a number of
issues appropriate to their age in weekly PSHE
lessons and assemblies.
The School has a full time nurse and a counsellor.
Relationships with parents
We believe that education works best when home and
school work together. Strong relationships with parents
are important to us and they play a vital part in each
girl’s journey through the School.
We keep parents up to date with school information
and their daughter’s progress through regular reports,
one-to-one parents’ evenings, termly mailings and our
online Parents Portal. We distribute a bi-annual news
magazine and the Junior School produces a weekly
newsletter. Girls in the Senior School produce an
annual magazine. We also enjoy getting to know families
through social gatherings, such as concerts, plays and
sporting events. Parents are welcome to contact us
at any time.
We receive generous support from our parent
associations, the PTA in the Junior School and the
Friends of South Hampstead (FOSH) in the Senior
School. Not only do these groups raise funds for the
School but they also provide a valuable social network
for parents bringing up daughters in London.
Policies and procedures
Every new family is given a Parents’ Handbook at
the start of the first term. This includes our policies
on Anti-bullying, Exclusions, Safeguarding and our
Complaints Procedure. Copies of these policies are
available on our website or upon request at any time.
The admissions process
South Hampstead High School is a popular school. Entry
is competitive at each stage of entry: 4+ (Reception),
7+ (Year 3), 11+ (Year 7) and 16+ (Sixth Form).
Joining the Junior School
We encourage everyone interested in our school to
come for a visit. It’s the best way to experience the
warm and friendly environment and an opportunity
to see the girls in action.
The Head of the Junior School provides tours for
prospective parents in the Junior School regularly,
throughout the year. There is also one Open Day each
summer which provides an opportunity to see the
School close up with tours led by our Year 6 girls. Both
tours can be booked by contacting the Junior School.
Entry to the Junior Department at 4+
(Reception)
We offer places to 24 girls at 4+ based on their
performance in assessments.
We recommend parents register their interest with
the Junior Department at least two years before their
daughter is due to start school. Application forms are
sent to all registered parents on the 1st of October, two
years before their daughter is due to start Reception.
The registration list is closed after the first 250
applications are received. There is also a waiting list.
The first assessment is held in the autumn, one year
before entry. All 250 girls are invited to the School. No
formal knowledge is expected. It is an enjoyable visit that
should be considered as a ‘play date’.
The girls visit in groups of 12 with five assessors.
We invite back approximately half of the candidates
for a second assessment in the spring. At this stage,
we request references. Places then are offered on the
basis of performance.
Entry to the Junior Department at 7+
(Year 3)
The School welcomes an additional 24 children at 7+.
We open registration approximately 18 months before
entry (i.e. if your daughter’s admission date is September
2013, application forms are sent in May 2012) and close
the list after the first 140 applications are received.
All applicants are invited for assessment in the spring
term of Year 2. We request references from each
candidate’s current school before the assessment.
Girls who perform well in assessment are invited back
in groups of 10 to 12 for observed activities and the
opportunity for the team of assessors to get to know
the girls. Places are offered to girls on the basis of their
performance on both days.
Transferring to the Senior School
Transfer from the Junior School to the Senior School
is anticipated. Children do not need to sit the entrance
examination, unless they would like to be considered for
an academic scholarship.
The happiness of each girl is our first priority. If the
School doesn’t feel it is in a girl’s best interest to transfer
to the Senior School, parents will be given plenty of
notice and the School will work closely with the family
to find a suitable alternative.
Joining the Senior School
The best way to experience the energy and excitement
of South Hampstead High School is to visit us. The
Senior School holds a number of Open Mornings in the
autumn term for families with daughters taking the 11+
examination. These visits can be booked by contacting
the Senior School Admissions Office or on our website.
Open Mornings begin at 9.15 and are scheduled for:
• 25 September
• 9 and 30 October
• 8 and 20 November
2012 Open Mornings will be held at our Cumberland
Campus. Due to limited space, these Open Mornings
are exclusively for families with daughters in Year 6
(2012/13).
Please be aware there is no parking available. We
strongly advise visitors to use public transport and ask
that you do not attempt to drive. Detailed information
on how to get to the Cumberland Campus can be
found on our website or the inside back cover of
this booklet.
Entry to the Senior School at 11+ (Year 7)
For entry in September 2013, application forms should
be returned to us by 7 December 2012. All registered
candidates will sit the entrance examination on 18
January 2013. Individuals who perform well on the
examination will be invited for an interview. Places are
offered in late February.
South Hampstead High School is part of the North
London Independent Girls’ Schools’ Consortium.
The Consortium sets common examination papers
and shares results. Full details of the North London
Independent Girls’ Schools’ Consortium Agreed Code
of Practice and past papers are available on our website
or from our Admissions Office.
Transferring to the Sixth Form
Transfer from Year 11 into the Sixth Form is anticipated.
Girls do not need to sit the entrance examination,
unless they would like to be considered for an academic
scholarship.
10
11

Joining the Sixth Form
Each year, we welcome new students into the Sixth
Form to join the girls moving up from the senior School.
In the autumn, we provide one Sixth Form Tour for girls
in Year 11 who are considering SHHS. This provides the
opportunity to meet our Head of Sixth Form, explore
the possibilities of the subjects on offer and see what
Sixth Form life is like. This year, the tour will be held
on 9 October 2012. Please contact the Senior School
Admissions Office or visit our website to reserve a
place.
Entry to the Senior School at 16+
(Sixth Form)
All girls applying at 16+ are invited to the school for
an interview and to take part in a group project with
other external candidates. Applicants must also submit
a marked piece of work that demonstrates their
talent in a subject that they wish to study at A Level.
Girls applying for a scholarship or bursary must sit
an examination which consists of data analysis and a
discursive essay.
Places are offered based on projects (work submitted),
interviews and projected GCSE grades. For external
candidates, offers are conditional on achieving eight
GCSE passes at grade A*-C with A in the subjects to
be studied at AS level.
Occasional vacancies
When occasional vacancies arise, suitable applicants on
the waiting list will be notified. Applicants must take the
appropriate entrance examination and, if they perform
well, will be invited for an interview. Priority will be given
to a candidate transferring from another GDST school
but only where, in the opinion of the Headmistress, she
would be likely to flourish at South Hampstead High
School. Entrance to Year 11 is not normally possible.
Overseas applicants
Arrangements may be made for overseas applicants to
sit entrance examinations under the supervision of their
current school.
Transfer to another GDST school
A South Hampstead High School pupil may have
to move home mid-course (or have other special
circumstances) and want to transfer to another GDST
school. The Trust supports such transfers, as long as they
are the right ones educationally, and assesses every case
individually. A transfer will usually be agreed provided
that there is a place available, and that the Head of the
new school judges that the pupil will thrive there. The
previous Head’s recommendation is sought and some
form of admissions assessment may be needed.
There is no sibling policy.
For 2013 entry, the closing date for Sixth Form
applications is 31October 2012. Projects and
examinations (for scholarship and bursaries only)
are due/will be held on 7 November 2012.
12
Fees for music lessons
(charged by visiting teachers)
Fees for music lessons are £220 per cycle of ten
35-minute lessons. Tuition on the following instruments
is available: singing, piano, flute, recorder, clarinet, oboe,
bassoon, violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, brass and
theory. Occasionally, pupils share lessons for £145 per
ten 35-minute lessons. In addition, a group theory
per ten 40-minute lessons. The school owns some
instruments, which can be hired out to pupils.
Visiting music teachers are self-employed and contracts
for music tuition are made between parents and
the teacher concerned. The school is not a party to
such contracts and parents are billed directly by their
daughter’s visiting music teacher(s). Fees should be
settled before the start of each term and one term’s
written notice should be given when a girl wishes to
discontinue music lessons, otherwise fees for one cycle
of ten lessons (£220) will be payable in lieu.
14
15

Scholarships and bursaries
A number of scholarships and bursaries are available
at 11+ (Year 7) and 16+ (Sixth Form).
Academic scholarships for up to 50% of the value
of the annual school fees are awarded based on
performance in the entrance examination. All girls sitting
the examination are automatically considered for the
academic scholarship. No separate application is needed.
However, existing South Hampstead High School
pupils who are moving up from the Junior School
must sit the examination to be eligible.
Bursaries are awarded on academic merit and the value
of the bursary is related to the income and financial
resources of the candidate’s family. For 2013/14, Bursary
applications are due by 16 November 2012.
Music Scholarships may be awarded for up to 50% of
the value of the fees for seven years at 11+ and two
years at 16+. These are prestigious awards and the
School is committed to the Scholars’ all-round musical
training. Music Scholars will become members by right
of the Music Scholars’ Society, through which they will
attend concerts and participate in masterclasses and
workshops.
Though there are no hard-and-fast rules, Year 7 scholars
are likely to have achieved at least Grade VI standard on
their first instrument, while a Sixth Form music scholar is
likely to be playing at around ABRSM Grade VIII level, or
beyond, on her first instrument.
Music Scholarship applications should be made by 7
December 2012. Application forms are available from
the Admissions Office or on our website.
Music scholarship auditions will be held on 30-31
January 2013. Students will be informed of their
audition time shortly after the results of the entrance
examinations are known, at which point we will ask for
a musical reference to be submitted on the candidate’s
behalf from one of her music teachers, or from
someone else suitably qualified to comment on her
musical ability.
More information about Music Scholarships and the
audition process is available in the Admissions section
on our website.
Notice
The Trust gives at least one term’s notice of any increase
in fees. Likewise, the Trust requires a full term’s notice
of the withdrawal of a student or one term’s fees in lieu
of notice.
