Award Win
Best Festival in the World ... Again!
Understanding the Basic Philosophy
Not everyone on the staff or board of the organization ‘gets’ it. “What’s the deal about
these Pinnacle Awards, anyway” or “Why put so much effort toward entries when we’re
so exhausted right after the end of our annual event” If you have to ask those kinds of
questions, you’re missing the point!
Happily there are people on the staff and board of the Rose Festival who remember
when the awards began – people who have been invested since day one and remain
invested each year (as well as others who might not have been there to begin with, but
have entirely embraced the enthusiasm). Together these individuals see the symbiotic
relationship that exists between our own festival and IFEA – and not only embrace it, but
enjoy finding ways to increase it. When IFEA and the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle
Awards are publicized, everybody wins! But there’s more to it, of course. The Portland
Rose Festival always loves a challenge – and is fiercely competitive. We don’t enter
simply to take part: We enter to WIN!
We just knew we’d win the Grand Pinnacle for our Centennial year back in 2007 – you
couldn’t have convinced us we’d lose if you’d tried. Then as it came time to enter our
various 2011 award submissions, our CEO was equally convinced we’d had another
major ‘winning year’ – and should try again for the Grand Pinnacle Award. He had to get
the COO on board (an essential aspect), but it didn’t take much coaxing on his part to
engage her (and the rest of the staff). Once the COO bought in to another attempt, all he
had to do was let her run with it, which she did with focus and enthusiasm. We were
almost convinced we’d won this award by the time we’d started to gather our wits and
prepare for the battle.
Our efforts began with a careful strategy that included the commitment of long hours of
effort – as well as a financial investment of $1,000 (unlike any previous submissions).
Plus there was an emotional and physical commitment, too: The timing for working on
this submission fell when our staff was drained from close to half a year of preparation.
Our event (which covers nearly a month) falls in May and June, so the early July
deadline is an annual challenge. And we’re proud of the fact that we don’t ‘farm out’ any
of our submissions to publication professionals. (If we can’t produce these in-house, we
don’t do it at all.) The only portion of the work not done by staff was the graphic layout of
the “2011 Grand Pinnacle: Rose Festival Renaissance” book (done by the man we’ve
used for years to do many of our graphics). This made for a far-from-simple effort to
produce the award-winning submission, but our can-do attitude had us convinced we’d

carry the day! The marketing benefits of winning the top award far exceed the
investment. The Rose Festival estimates the value of the Grand Pinnacle at
conservatively $10,000-$20,000 of direct marketing benefit.
Overview Information
From the minute the announcement of the Grand Pinnacle Award was made on Monday,
October 3, 2011, we were geared up with our campaign to publicize our win. A news
item was put on our website Home page that same day, and our Facebook page
immediately featured a photo of CEO Jeff Curtis and President Sue Bunday in Texas
holding the impressive and well-known pyramid-shaped trophy with text that included:
“For the second time in our history, the Rose Festival won the Grand Pinnacle Award,
the highest award in our industry, for the Rose Festival Renaissance of 2011!”
A press release of all our awards was distributed the following day (giving us time to
carefully double-check the information).
And plans began to create a ‘Welcome Home’ event at the Portland International Airport
on Wednesday, October 5 – partnering with the Royal Rosarians and sending out a
Media Alert to share our excitement. This quickly arranged festive occasion included lots
of signs, white-suited ambassadors, yellow-jacketed staff and board members, plus
Portland citizens who were equally happy to join in the fun of greeting the Grand
Pinnacle Award as it arrived home!
Soon the award was in the Rose Building sitting side-by-side with the Grand Pinnacle
from 2007 – a testament of more than our status as an internationally top event, but also
a statement of how organizations can support one another through effective publicity
efforts.
By November we were planning a Christmas card with a design that featured the Grand
Pinnacle award on the cover and the following text inside: “Best wishes for a GRAND
Holiday Season! The Portland Rose Festival Foundation.”
Supporting Question
You only need to visit our website Home page to know we actively promote our win of
the 2011 Grand Pinnacle Award -- an image of the award appears prominently, joined
with a link to the IFEA website. Our website also includes an Awards page that shares
this announcement (plus another image of the award).
Our Communications Team deliberately put a strong focus on this award, using every
opportunity to reiterate the win. We’re proud of this effective group that understands the
ins and outs of every aspect of communication methods: Standard PR (including Press
Releases, Media Advisories, etc.), Social Media online, television and radio – plus public
appearance events. We know how to utilize all of these methods – including word-ofmouth
– to our best advantage in spreading the messages that we focus on.
Press Releases sent out since the announcement all reference the win. Even the email
signature lines of staff included the text: “Best Festival in the World … Again!” It was

nearly impossible to find a story on television, radio or online about the Portland Rose
Festival that didn’t include mention of the award, with our website alone reaching
millions of people annually (internationally, not just locally).
We’re PROUD that we won this award – and we’re quick to share that pride with others!
And that’s what we believe the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards are all about:
Pride in our work, pride in our festival, pride in our industry – and pride in our association
with the International Festivals & Events Association.
International Festivals & Events Association Gives Rose Festival Highest Honor
PORTLAND, Ore.‐ For the second time in five years Portland’s official festival, the Portland Rose
Festival, was awarded the Grand Pinnacle as the top festival in 2011 at the IFEA/ Haas & Wilkerson
Pinnacle Awards convention in Dallas, Texas Monday October 3. The Portland Rose Festival last won the
Grand Pinnacle for the Festival’s Centennial Celebration in 2007.
Rose Festival President Sue Bunday and CEO Jeff Curtis, in attendance to receive the award, also
brought home a grab bag of: 8 Gold (including Best Environmental Program), 2 Silver and 6 Bronze
awards.
“This is the 14 th year in a row we have been in the top three in the Best Environmental
category,” said Sue Bunday, President Portland Rose Festival Foundation. “I’m thrilled to be able to bring
home the first place (gold) award for the Cleanest and Greenest Festival in the World!”
Steve Schmader, President and CEO of the IFEA – the trade organization for the events industry ‐
said "The Rose Festival has been a leader in this industry for more than a century. It's always a pleasure
to see the work they do and have it rewarded. There's no higher award than the Grand Pinnacle."
The Rose Festival Renaissance is real! Festival results are up in almost every category that can be
measured. Attendance for Rose Festival events was up, as well, most notably at the Starlight Parade
where it was estimated as one of the largest crowds in recent history. Portland's public transit system
reported record numbers. TriMet experienced its largest day ever on the Saturday of Starlight Parade
and second‐largest on Grand Floral Parade day.
In other words, the Portland Rose Festival has done a whole lot since reaching its centenary
milestone in 2007, including:
• Becoming Portland's Official Festival in 2010
• Taking occupation of a historic building on the waterfront in downtown Portland, a gift
from the City of Portland
Portland's Official Festival Named Best In World...
Again!
October 3, 2011
International Festivals & Events Association Gives Rose
Festival Highest Honor
For the second time in five years Portland's official festival -- the
Portland Rose Festival -- was awarded the Grand Pinnacle as the
top festival in 2011 at the IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle
Awards convention in Dallas, Texas on Monday October 3. (The
Portland Rose Festival last won the Grand Pinnacle for the
Festival's Centennial Celebration in 2007.)
Rose Festival President Sue Bunday and CEO Jeff Curtis (in
attendance to receive the award) also brought home a grab bag
which included eight Gold (including Best Environmental
Program), two Silver and six Bronze awards.
"This is the 14th year in a row we've been in the top three in the
Best Environmental category," said Sue Bunday, (President,
Portland Rose Festival Foundation). "I'm thrilled to be able to
bring home the first place (Gold) award for the Cleanest and
Greenest Festival in the World!"
Steve Schmader, President and CEO of the IFEA (the trade
organization for the events industry) said, "The Rose Festival has
been a leader in this industry for more than a century. It's
always a pleasure to see the work they do and have it rewarded.
There's no higher award than the Grand Pinnacle."
The Rose Festival Renaissance is real! Festival results are up in
almost every category that can be measured. Attendance for
Rose Festival events was up, as well, most notably at the
Starlight Parade (where it was estimated as one of the largest
crowds in recent history). Portland's public transit system
reported record numbers. TriMet experienced its largest day ever
on the Saturday of Starlight Parade -- and second-largest on
Grand Floral Parade day.
In other words, the Portland Rose Festival has done a whole lot
since reaching its centenary milestone in 2007, including:
Becoming Portland's Official Festival in 2010
Taking occupation of a historic building on the waterfront in
downtown Portland, a gift from the City of Portland
Shoring up its top sponsorships, adding two six-figure title
sponsors and one major event, a fitness walk
Securing a partnership with Competitor Group, the world's
most popular running franchise, to host a Rock 'n' Roll Half
Marathon in 2012
Completely renewing its most lucrative event, giving it new
programming, new promotions and a new name: Rose
