• There are 3 types of Ethernet Switches<br />

– Layer 2 Switch<br />

• Distributes traffic to each destination using MAC addressing table.<br />

• Broadcasts the <strong>Multicast</strong> traffic across all its ports<br />

– There are no <strong>Multicast</strong> traffic filters with these switches<br />

– Layer 2 Switch with IGMP Snooping<br />

• Distributes traffic to each destination using MAC addressing table<br />

• Provides limited control of <strong>Multicast</strong> traffic to prevent broadcast of the<br />

traffic to all ports.<br />

• Layer 3 IGMP master is needed in the network<br />

– Layer 3 Switch/Router with IGMP<br />

• Distributes traffic to each destination using MAC addressing table.<br />

• Distributes traffic to each destination using IP subnet addressing table.<br />

• Provides maximum control of <strong>Multicast</strong> traffic to prevent broadcast of<br />

the traffic to all ports and all subnet.
