MANAGEMENT
Make-A-Wish ® Singapore is part of the world’s largest wish granting organisation. Since the launch
of our affiliate in 2003, we have granted over 385 magical wishes to children with life-threatening
medical conditions.
Make-A-Wish ® is supported by over 200 volunteers, 10 board members and 5 staff and is the only
wish granting organisation in Singapore.
history
The Make-A-Wish Foundation ® began in the USA in 1980 with the
fulfilment of the first wish. A seven-year-old boy with Leukaemia
named Chris Greicius wished to be a policeman. His mother,
several friends and a group of police officers granted his wish with
a custom-made uniform, helmet, badge and a helicopter ride!
Since this wish, the magic and power of Make-A-Wish ® has spread
and affiliate organisations can now be found in more than 33
countries and territories around the world.
Our children’s wishes generally fall into one of four categories:
1. I wish to be
2. I wish to have
3. I wish to go
4. I wish to meet
These wishes can be as creative and unique as a child’s imagination,
providing much needed joy to the children and their families, while
also creating timeless memories.
We hope that by making these wishes come true and creating
an unforgettable and meaningful experience, it will provide these
children with a source of encouragement, hope and even strength
in their fight to overcome their illnesses.
MISSION
Make-A-Wish Foundation ® seeks to create hope and happiness
by granting the heartfelt wishes of children with life-threatening
illnesses.
VISION
Our goal is to reach every medically eligible child in Singapore.
Chairman’s Message
Beneficiary Information
Make-a-Wish® Singapore, in 2008
Testimonals from Our Referrals
no. of referrals in 2008
Dwight Eisenhower once said “There’s no tragedy in life like the
death of a child. Things never get back to the way they were..”
Indeed, as a doctor, whenever a child is lost to brain cancer or
some other severe illness, a part of me is lost too. I can scarcely
imagine the anguish of parents and families whose children have
to go through the stages of fighting a life-threatening illness, not
knowing whether the outcome will be survival or death.
Whilst there is only so much medicine can do to restore health,
there is a lot that we can do, through Make-A-Wish, to bring
happiness into the lives of these children and their families. As
one father told me, the excitement and anticipation of the wish
to be granted gave the entire family something to look forward
to, and more importantly, just something else to talk about,
apart from the illness. When the wish is eventually granted,
many families speak of the immense joy that is experienced, the
unforgettable memories of smiles and laughter, and the warm
feelings of a community of people who care and love enough
to do something extraordinary just to make a child happy. My
heart is always moved whenever I have the privilege of being
part of a wish.
Looking back at 2008
This 6th year for Make-A-Wish in Singapore has seen continued
growth in the number of wishes granted, funds raised, volunteer
recruitment and board development. 101 wishes were granted
to children with illnesses ranging from leukaemia and brain
tumours to severe epilepsy and muscular dystrophy, averaging
about 2 wishes every week.
Our fund-raising efforts were boosted by our first Gala Dinner
event in October, which was held at One° 15 Marina Club,
in addition to our signature 6th Annual Golf Tournament. We
expanded our Adopt-A-Wish ® program, in which individuals
and corporations were given the opportunity of directing their
donations entirely to funding a child’s wish (83 wishes were
adopted in total).
Achieving all this could not have been possible without a strong
and dedicated management team. CEO, Debbie Seah, with
Tho Pei Leng, new Director of Development Catherine Ho,
Diane Koh and Poh Hwee Keng, delivered phenomenal results
in terms of fund-raising (reversing a negative balance in 2007 of
$56,013 to a nett surplus of $274,383), growing our volunteer
and referral base, and building awareness of Make-A-Wish
through many media avenues.
Our board development also continued, now comprising 10
directors, covering a wide range of skill sets including business,
finance, accounting, law, medicine, public relations, media,
human resource, career coaching and fashion.
I feel privileged to be with such an amazing group of people,
who generously give of their time, resources and expertise to
the Make-A-Wish cause, and am most grateful.
“Bringing joy, giving strength,
inspiring hope...these are the things
which make our hearts beat...”
Looking forward to 2009
Although there will be challenges in 2009 from the global
economic downturn, we know that our capacity will have to
increase. Children will continue to be stricken with illness and
there will be more referrals as Make-A-Wish gets increasingly
known throughout Singapore. We will need to expand our
management team, look for larger office premises, and ensure
best governance practices in the way we run our foundation.
Yet the fundamental mission of making wishes come true will
remain the focus of all our efforts. Bringing joy, giving strength,
inspiring hope...these are the things which make our hearts
beat...
dr Keith Goh, Board Chair
Make-A-Wish Foundation ® has granted the wishes of many
children who I have referred from CCF. These children are
impacted with life threatening illnesses such as cancer and
looking forward to getting their wishes granted can offer them
lots of hope and encouragement. I have personally attended
many wish granting occasions and I’m always moved when I
see how happy these children are. Many parents say that their
children are not the same after their wishes are granted since
they seem to have an added “spark” in themselves after that.
“The power of the wish is truly amazing as it definitely is a ray
of sunshine to the often bleak days of these children with life
threatening illnesses”
Aaqilah Latiff
Social Worker
Children’s Cancer Foundation
In the past one-and-a-half-years, CKC has referred 19 patients,
or 70% of our Centre’s eligible patients, with end stage kidney
failure to Make-A-Wish Foundation ® Singapore to have their
wishes fulfilled.
From the feedback we have received from patients whose wishes
have been granted, we know with certainty that this is one of the
most successful partnerships we have had with a community
organisation. All the patients reported the experience of having
their wish fulfilled as one of the most memorable moments of
their lives where they felt ever so special. One of the first patients
whose Wish Granters organised a lunch at Four Seasons Hotel
where Joseph Asogan, with the help of Four Seasons Hotel’s
top chef, whipped up a three course meal, told me, wearing an
overwhelmed but serious expression, that with all the dedication
that his Wish Granters and Make-A-Wish Foundation ® have put
into fulfilling his Wish, he wants to start treasuring his life and
live it to the fullest so that he would not let anyone down.
The wish-fulfilment experience also received a lot of appreciation
from parents. Many shared that the experience was simply
magical, and most importantly, it brought their children renewed
strength to battle their illness.
As Make-A-Wish Foundation’s proud partner, we wish Make-A-
Wish Foundation ® continued success in bringing sponsors and
beneficiaries together to create everlasting magical memories
in young lives.
Wish Stories
Wish Stories
Muhammad Helmy, 16, Leukaemia
Wish: To have a laptop
Enhancement: Yacht Sailing!
Ship and sea are Helmy’s first love so Wish Granters Soma and
Juli surprised him with a treat at the SAF Yacht Club. Helmy,
with a wide smile and a sturdy pair of sea legs, ran around the
deck excitedly, unperturbed by the swaying boat. He was so
steady onboard that the boat’s captain was so impressed and
offered him a weekend job to help out on the yacht.
As the sun set, everyone enjoyed a delicious
nasi lemak meal dinner before games
began. Instead of presenting Helmy
with his wish gift, we had him search
our hidden treasure chest! Surrounded
by his family, he opened it to find a
notebook computer, pre-loaded with
useful software and his favourite
Man Utd picture.
It was a truly memorable day for Helmy
and all onboard. Quoting Captain
Graeme, “I have never had a more
delightful group on the yacht!”
Charmaine, 13, End Stage Kidney
Failure & visually impaired
Wish: To Be A Published Author
Enhancement: Her book launch and personal autograph
session at World Book Fair, Suntec City
Charmaine Tan who is suffering from end stage kidney failure,
was referred to Make-A-Wish by Ms Tey Li Li from the Shaw-
NKF Children Kidney Centre on 28 March 2008. She is a shy
and sweet 13 year old who has also suffering from a congenital
eye disease for the past 11 years. Unfortunately, Charmaine
lost most of her eyesight recently but her wish is to write and
publish a book.
Make-A-Wish quickly got in touch with the Pick Me Up Team
and partnered with them to publish Charmaine’s story as part
of their self-help compilation: Pick Me Up 2nd Edition. The book
is dedicated to Charmaine, her story titled ‘Ceryni’s Secret’
is included as the first story in the book, accompanied by
childhood and current photos with a touching foreword written
by her principal doctor, Prof Yap Hui Kim.
The Pick Me Up team didn’t just stop at getting Charmaine’s
story published, they also created a special one-hour segment
to celebrate her achievement at the World Book Fair on 31 May
2008. Charmaine’s mother shared about the difficult road she
and her daughter journeyed on. Charmaine then spoke to thank
the people who had helped her along the way. In a tender and
loving moment, Charmaine turned to her mother and hugged
her, each the most important person in the other’s life.
A big Wish-cake was presented to Charmaine for being
such a STAR and all the supporters sang Charmaine a Wish
Day song.
During the autograph session and media interviews that
followed, her family got to watch Charmaine autograph her
books and turn into a young celebrity that Saturday.
Justina Lang, 17 & Titus Lang, 11, Niemann-Pick Disease Type C
Justina’s wish: to go outdoors, with a Portable oxygen concentrator
Titus’ wish: to have a modified wheelchair to support his trunk
Enhancement: A Stroll in the Park !
Justina and Titus are a pair of bright and cheerful siblings who
have been always confined indoors because of their illness.
Justina is dependent on an oxygen concentrator and both
children are wheelchair-bound, making it impossible for anyone
to bring them outdoors.
It was truly a dream come true for Justina when Drew & Napier
adopted her wish and Titus’ as well. After Justina and Titus
received their wish-gifts, they were brought to the Botanic
Gardens for a special treat on 28 Jun 2008. They celebrated
their wish party with lunch at Halia Restaurant where they were
joined by close relatives and Dr Stacey Koh. A balloon sculpting
performance and caricature drawing by our volunteer Peter
Draw followed. The memorable day ended with a leisurely walk
around Botanic Gardens with the children’s favourite Barney
songs playing in the background. Everyone who attended
Justina and Titus’ Wish Day was absolutely touched by the joy
shown in Justina’s eyes and Titus’ smiles.
Celine Ong, 10, Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Wish: To have a tricycle (modified for special need)
Enhancement: ‘High School Musical’ Theme Party
On 8 March, Celine was told she was going to a swim meet at the
Anglo Chinese School (Independent). When Celine arrived, she
was wheeled into the school’s pitch-dark auditorium. When the
lights were switched on, she was surprised and overwhelmed
with joy when she saw all her school friends. On top of that,
student councillors from ACS(I) were dressed up as the High
School Musical cast and performed for Celine and her friends.
While the band played on, Celine was presented with another
surprise, her dearly wished-for tricycle.
Six-year-old Nicholas Ray a bright and chatty boy with
made possible by a group of dedicated Wish Granters and
enthusiastic volunteers who created an unforgettable afternoon
for Nicholas.
Nicholas’ eyes went wide when his parents and him entered
the meticulously Spiderman-themed Suntec function room. He
was greeted by his family and friends who immediately sang
“Happy Birthday”. Totally overwhelmed by the appearance
of superheroes Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Catwoman,
Spidey and Batman and invited them to eat with him. He had a
wonderful time pretending to ‘fight’ with the superheroes amidst
the other fun activities.
Nicholas’s mom wrote ‘My family are just overwhelmed by the
Enhancement – Barney Party !
Taufiq is a child with Down’s Syndrome who is also battling
leukaemia and recent heart complications. Apart from
hospital-visiting, he spends his time watching Barney shows
and playing Barney games. Taufiq’s family cannot afford to
buy a flat of their own currently. Now, Taufiq’s new desktop
computer will allow him to do his favourite things all-day in his
grandparent’s house.
On 27 July 2008, Taufiq was brought to a
colourful room filled with Barney’s songs where
he was surprised by none other than his
favourite, Barney.
His mother told us at the end of the party
“We have always wanted to reward Taufiq for
being brave. This party is a blast!”
Danyal, 9, Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy
wish: to have a VIP holiday in Singapore with his cousins
Megan, 8, Osteosarcoma
wish: to have a Princess Birthday Party
Danyal is a 9-year-old with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystophy. An
only child, Danyal’s heartfelt wish for a special holiday with his
family and cousins in Singapore is easily understandable. What
a cool wish! Danyal’s wish came with some specifics — he
wanted a holiday that included a hotel stay with a bath tub and
a television that had Cartoon Network! Make-A-Wish’s global
partner, Grand Hyatt Hotel hosted the family in 2 Grand Suite/
Grand Deluxe Rooms with warm and
personalised service.
His Wish Granters, Cheryl and
Jacqueline, organised a two days
fun-filled experience for Danyal, with
Lotus Limousine picking him and his
‘kakis’ from Hyatt Hotel for a VIP spin
around Sentosa and Orchard Road,
a reasure hunt in Vivo City, a private
Singapore Flyer capsule view, a
hop on the Christmas Light-up
Open Top Bus, watching magician
Mr Bottle perform in his suite, movie
and dinner treats, and having lots
of playing time with his cousins.
Danyal’s parents told us how happy Danyal is with his wish and
how the whole family was touched by the entire experience. His
father added, “We’ve asked Danyal where he wants to go for his
birthday next March. He said he doesn’t want to go away so he
can play with his cousins here.”
More than anything Megan longed for a magical princess
birthday party, and so her Magical Fairy Carol and Storybook
King David, along with a host of knights, princesses and
princes set about to make her wish come true at the Velvet
Underground-turned royal palace! The guests assembled at the
Royal palace were unaware of an emergency – the cake had not
appeared! Wish-fairy Carol was in a tizzy, but with a wave of her
invisible wand the cake appeared just in time.
King Daddy, Queen Mummy, Princess Megan, and Prince
Meyson made their grand entrance to thunderous applause from
their loyal subjects, the littlest ones rushing up to wish the pretty
Princess the very happiest of birthdays. Then the festivities
kicked off as courtiers held out treasure-filled piñatas and each
young prince and princess took turns to ‘Whack’ the piñatas
until a treasure trove of candy spilled out. And after everyone
made a mad dash to collect as much ‘treasure’ as they could,
it was time to feast on the delectable banquet before activities
such as an arts and crafts session, face painting, story-telling
and balloon sculpting.
What followed was the birthday cake that everyone was waiting
for, and what a wondrous birthday cake it was – a mermaid
seated on a seashell. All too soon, the clock chimed and it was
time for all the princes, princesses and royal subjects to return
to their palaces. For one young princess, it was a party never
to forget.
Charity Gala Dinner: Black Tie and Diamonds
The event was held on 11 October with 260 guests and VIPs in
attendance at One° 15 Marina overlooking the water at Sentosa
Cove, Singapore. All were treated to a cocktail reception,
the cool sounds of Harry’s Jazz Band, a Lucky Draw, and
entertainment by Sherman, the magician. Dinner was a gourmet
feast. Gala Committee Chairman, Paul Heng, welcomed guests.
The programme continued with a Live Auction conducted by
Vincent Wee. The sold-out event could be summed up in three
words: Glitz, Glamour, and Generosity. Make-A-Wish is most
grateful to all who made this such a success.
Christmas Party
The Annual Christmas Party was held on 14 December 2008 at
the ballroom of Suntec City Convention Centre. The foundation
received numerous offers from schools and organisations who
came forward to participate in the party either by donating
cash and gifts or even to perform for the Wish Children and
their families.
Attended by 800 guests, the families were treated to various
activities and delightful performances that left beautiful smiles
on the children’s faces. An effort truly worthwhile!
6th Annual Charity Golf Tournament
Our annual charity golf event has once again been a great
success – raising a record sum of S$300,000! From the hardworking
volunteers to the golfers who took the afternoon off on
a Friday to come support our worthy cause as well as the guests
who enjoyed the evening’s festivities – one key factor stands
out: Fun! This fun begets the happiness, laughter, and treasured
memories to be enjoyed by our very special children.
Art Party at PrivÉ
The party was led by the artist, Koh Tien Gui, and kindly sponsored
by Privé. An enjoyable day was had by all when everyone worked
side-by-side expressing their creativity. The results were splashes
of vibrant colors, beautiful works of art, smiles everywhere and
fond memories to treasure.
Make-A-Wish ® Singapore was JP Morgan’s chosen charity for the
2008 Halloween Charity Event. The Halloween committee members
and volunteers, dressed in creative and vivid costumes, walked the
JPM premises on 31 October 2008, filling their trick-or-treat sacks
quickly. The outcome was a grand total of S$40,000 in donations!
Due to the success of the event, from which all funds raised went to
Make-A-Wish, JPM SG was able to grant eight wishes from our wish
list. The wishes ranged from buggies and wheelchairs, to a trip to
Disneyland HK, and even a room makeover. They brought immense
joy to each child and eased some of the physical and financial
burdens of their parents. The end result – precious, priceless smiles
on the faces of the children and parents!
raise these funds. In addition to these funds, at the Club’s
Christmas party, members of the club make donations
ranging from computer games, to Barbie dolls, to clothing
and gift vouchers. More and more Club members give their
time as well by contributing as Wish Granters or through
administrative help in the office. This family organisation
takes immense satisfaction from being involved with the
foundation. Their contribution, in their own unique way,
comes from the heart. It is a true reflection of the work of
the foundation itself.
Ways to Support Us
Donation Form
Thank you for sharing so generously!
1. Adopt-A-Wish
Your family, company, or association can make a difference
in the life of a Wish Child through our Adopt-A-Wish ®
program. For a donation of $1,000 you can become a Wish
Partner and know that, together with another organisation
or individual, you have helped make a dream come true.
Or for a donation of $5,000 or more, you would have the
satisfaction of becoming a Wish Sponsor and knowing
that your gift was sufficient to grant a wish in its entirety.
In both instances you will receive a brief description of the
wish you made possible.
Alternatively, your group can add a new twist to a special
event, whether it’s a wheelchair wish or themed party,
by adopting a wish and adding new meaning to your
celebration theme.
Upon special request we will be happy to send you
information to share with your organisation the Make-A-
Wish story you adopted.
2. Host An Event
Your company, association, school, or club can create a
fund-raising event of its own to benefit the Wish Children of
Singapore. From company holiday parties to family reunions,
groups are essential in the support of the 100+ wishes
we provide each year. Some examples of external events
that have made dreams come true over the last 7 years
are car washes, walk-a-thons, anniversary celebrations,
exhibitions, annual dinner and dance, concerts, golf
tournaments, causal days, customer appreciation days,
bake sales, or percentages of business sales.
3. In Kind Donation
Many of our wishes are made possible through pro
bono (volunteered) services and in-kind (free or deeply
discounted) donations, including:
(i) Auction and Lucky Draw Items
The Make-A-Wish Foundation ® holds fund-raising events
with both auctions and lucky draws. If you would like to
donate a new or collectible item e.g. electronic items,
branded bags, dining or shopping vouchers, hotel stays,
mobile phones, please contact our office at 6334 9474.
(ii) Wish Gifts
Our Wish Granters often contact community members
to obtain wish gifts or services. These in-kind donations,
for e.g. party venue and food & beverage, PSPs, Wiis,
shopping vouchers, laptops, kid entertainment, help bring
wishes to life or add that special touch that brings an extra
sparkle to a child’s eyes.
4. Monthly Giving Club
The Monthly Giving Club allows you to make a difference
in the lives of these children - without writing checks or
mailing envelopes. Once you sign up, there is nothing
else for you to do. Your contributions will continue to be
transferred on a regular basis until you decide to suspend
your participation. Your tax-deductible contribution will
show up each month on your credit card statement, which
will serve as your receipt.
5. Tributes and Memorials
Tributes
Make a minimum gift of $10.00 or more to our Wish Children
in honor of someone special for a birthday, anniversary,
or special occasion and we will send the honoree a card
acknowledging your gift.
Memorials
Make a gift in lieu of flowers in memory of a friend or loved
one who has passed away. We will acknowledge your gift
to the family and share with all of you the story of one of
our wishes.
6. Workplace Giving
Matching Gifts
Numerous companies offer a matching gifts program, which
could double your annual contribution to the Make-A-
Wish Foundation ® Singapore. Check with your company’s
personnel or accounting department and team up with your
employer to create memories that will last forever.
