Chris Greicius Story
Overview
The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in Arizona, USA, in 1980. The
Singapore affiliate, launched officially on 30 April 2003, is part of a global
organisation that has granted more than 144,000 wishes over the last 26
years.
These wishes are an opportunity for very sick children to experience some
hope, strength and joy during a very difficult period in their lives. The Wish
itself is only limited by the child’s imagination, though they usually fall into
one of four categories: “I wish to have”, ”I wish to go”, “I wish to meet”, and
“I wish to be.”
The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that the “Wish
experience” has on children, their families, referral sources, donors, sponsors,
volunteers and entire communities.
How It All Started
In 1980, a seven-year-old boy named Chris Greicius had a dream of being a
police officer. Little did Chris know that the biggest thing in the world to him,
would be the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organisation in the
world.
Most children have plenty of time to realize their dreams as they grow up.
But Chris didn’t have the luxury of time – he had leukaemia and his prognosis
wasn’t good. According to Chris’ mother and those who knew him, Chris had
a special quality that captivated those around him. So it wasn’t surprising that
friends were so taken by his interest in police officers that they wanted to
ensure this little boy received his wish of becoming one.
On that special day – 29 April 1980 – Chris’ wish was granted. A police helicopter
flew Chris and his family to the Phoenix-area Department of Public Safety,
where three squad cars and a motorcycle awaited their arrival. It was then that
Chris was sworn in as an officer of the law and received his badge.
An official police uniform was made especially for Chris and he was given an
officer’s motorcycle proficiency test before receiving his “wings”. The volunteers
helping to make Chris’ dream come true had set up a driving test area so Chris
could use his battery-operated motorcycle and show everyone his maneuvering
skills. Two days after this magical day, Chris was back in the hospital and he
passed away shortly after. Chris’s experience led to the establishment of the
Chairman’s Message
Make-A-Wish in Singapore, 2006
In Singapore today, there are close to 2000 registered charities, with beneficiaries ranging
from abandoned pets to environmental causes to old age homes. Every few months, there is
adverse publicity in the media about financial scandals and poorly-run charities. The buzz
words today are “governance” and “internal controls”.
Although there is no established “ranking” system for charities in Singapore yet, I am proud to
report that the Make-A-Wish Foundation has received top honours from Charity Navigator,
America’s largest independent evaluator of charities, for allocating and growing its finances
in a fiscally responsible way, with a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Reader’s Digest of Australia also
ranked Make-A-Wish as one of the top ten most trusted charities in Australia. As Chairman
of Make-A-Wish International as well, I would like to say that this ethos is something which
we strive for in each of our Make-A-Wish organizations worldwide and most certainly in
Singapore. The dollars we raise go towards bringing happiness and joy to as many children
with life-threatening illnesses as possible.
2006 marked the 4th year that Make-A-Wish has been operating in Singapore, and I am
proud to report that a total of 67 wishes were granted. Some of the wishes were truly
magical, and it brought great satisfaction to all of us to see the joy in these children’s faces.
As more than 100 children every year are newly diagnosed with cancer and many others with
similarly life-threatening conditions, we hope to increase our wish numbers in 2007 by at
least 20%.
To this end, we continue to work hard on our fund-raising. Our annual golf tournament has
remained our signature event, held at Laguna Golf Club in 2006, with both the Masters and
Classic courses fully sold out, and more than $100,000 raised. In addition, our Stories-of-
Light campaign which was launched for the second year at year-end, helped build awareness
of the work that we do, and was a great success. We were also fortunate that we were
the beneficiaries of two other events organized by Janice and Terry O’Connor - Shanghai
Nights and another golf event held at the Singapore Island Country Club, and I would like
to express my deep gratitude to them for their efforts. There are many others, corporations
and individuals, who have supported us with funding throughout the year, and we are most
appreciative of all these donations.
On behalf of the office staff, I would also like to thank my fellow Board members for their
counsel, guidance and support through the year. It is not an easy task in today’s charity
climate, with increasing public expectations of board integrity and responsibility.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank all our volunteers... major corporations, wish-granters,
fund-raisers, office helpers, corporate... Each and every one who has given of themselves,
their time, efforts, and money… to support the mission of making wishes come true. These
special children have a difficult burden to bear, and if we can bring a little ray of sunshine into
their troubled lives, we will all be the better for it...
The Year in Review
In 2006 we granted a total of 67 wishes. Of the
67 wishes the most popular wish was for either
a Laptop or Computer, which registered at 24
wishes. The second most popular wish was for
electronic items such as play-station, game-boy
or a motorised wheelchair. By 31 st Dec 06, we
had granted over 190 wishes since our launch
in 2003.
One of the most memorable & endearing wishes
in 2006, was 6 year old Ezra who wanted to
build a sandcastle. He helped in the building of
a mega structure sandcastle and his dream was
enhanced with him playing with the pink dolphins
in Sentosa.
2006 marked generous continued support from
many donors, sponsors, fund-raisers and wellwishers
who helped us to achieve a total income
of $611,769 for the year.
Credit Suisse
grants 10 wishes
Over the past year, Credit Suisse 1st Boston has brought huge
smiles to ten very special children who wished to have their
own laptops. A laptop computer may seem a simple wish to
most, but to these children it is their gateway to freedom. It
not only provides a portable entertainment system that they
can take to the hospital but also lets them link up by email with
friends whom they have greatly missed. The laptop quickly
becomes their most prized possession and their delight at
having their wish fulfilled is plain for all to see. On behalf of all
the Wish Children, we would like to sincerely thank everyone
at Credit Suisse for their donation of $25,303 which has made
all these children literally click and tap into a new world.
K’s for Kids
Eight year old
Gordon’s wish to
go to Brisbane in
Australia to see a
real live kangaroo
became a reality,
thanks to the
recent efforts of the Australia and New Zealand Association’s
cycling club. Around 50 members of the club rode islandwide
on 10 December to clock up an amazing total of 5000
kilometres between them, raising more than $5,000 to make
Gordon’s greatest wish come true. The cyclists were greeted
at the end of their mammoth ride by a flock of Make-A Wish®
fairies, wearing their trademark tutus and tiaras, who thanked
the hot and tired cyclists for their generous efforts.
Balloons
soar with
SOXAL
For over a year now, SOXAL has made hundreds of balloons
soar, bringing lots of fun to Wish Children. In 2006, aside
from providing helium gas, they were our Main Sponsor for
the ‘Stories of Light’ campaign, sponsoring us with a generous
contribution of $20,000. Make-A-Wish® was also made the
beneficiary of their Movie Premiere of Miami Vice, held on
September 22nd. As they entertained their clients with the
thrills and suspense of the movie, they also helped us to raise
awareness for our mission. We would like to thank them for
their continued support and generosity and look forward to a
continued partnership.
SOXAL supplies the gas requirements of virtually every sector of
the industry including electronics, chemicals, petroleum, marine,
aerospace, metallurgical, pharmaceutical and hospitals, military, food
and beverages.
O’Connor & Friends bring glamour, glitz and generosity to Make-A-Wish
Terry and Janice O’Connor host spectacular parties at their house every year. Not only are the
parties full of fun and entertainment , but they are also aimed at raising funds for various
charities. In 2006, Janice and her team of dedicated volunteers chose Make-A-Wish as their
charity and raised a record sum of $140,800, breaking the previous record of $88,000.
In order to raise the record amount, the
committee organized two fund-raising events:
- A Charity Golf Tournament (6 September
2006) which saw a total of 120 golfers tee
off raising $48,800 in the process.
- A ‘Shanghai Night of Wishes’ themed charity
dinner at the O’Connor’s residence (11
November 2006) which raised $92,000.
The fund-raising dinner was supported by
over 300 people.
Some Wish Children have already benefitted
from the proceeds. Wish Child Audrey’s desire
for a laptop was fulfilled in November and
Joel’s wish to go ski-ing in Hokkaido was
granted in December.
We are tremendously grateful for the
wonderful support from the O’Connor family
and friends towards Make-A-Wish Foundation.
British Club adoption
of Make-A-Wish® is a
proud moment for the
Foundation. The team
at British Club and the
generous members has
brought numerous smiles
to our children and their
families. The British Club
sponsored wonderful gifts
for our children at the
Xmas Wishes Party, raised
$18,000 in funds for
the Foundation through
internal fundraising
activities and invited
Make-A-Wish to be part
of their annual British
Club Day to share our
mission to the members.
Thank you British Club
for the generous support
towards the Foundation.
Novartis Corporate Partnership
For the second year running, global pharmaceutical company
Novartis chose to work with Make-A-Wish for their annual
Community Partnership Day. In the lead up to the one day
event (held on 9 May), the employees raised $10K via pledge
cards which helped to grant Adam’s travel wish to Disneyland.
More than 100 employees then took part in an ‘amazing race’
team building activity before helping to prepare for the Wish
Children’s party in the evening. Employees commented on how
meaningful they found the event to be and how pleased they
were to be able to contribute to making Adam’s wish come true.
Teeing-off
for charity
For the tenth
consecutive year,
Accenture sponsored and presented the Accenture Champion of Champions
leg of the Singapore Golf Circuit. Accenture has been in Singapore for the last
30 years, helping companies and government agencies in Singapore become
high performance organizations. To further their commitment as a corporate
citizen, 2006 pro-am raised $21,000 in aid of Make-A-Wish Foundation
. Seah Chin Siong, Country Managing Director of Accenture Singapore,
said, “Our intention, through this initiative, was not only to create public
awareness of this foundation and its cause, but through direct donations by
the golfers, be able to bring renewed hope, strength and joy to these special
children by granting their heartfelt wishes.”
On behalf of the Wish Children, we would like to thank Accenture and all of
the golfers for their generous support.
Kids21 Fashion Show
- Sunday 16th April
Moving up in the world of Fashion,
Make-A-Wish® was invited to partner
with Kids21 as they hosted their Annual
Kids Fashion show on 16th April. Kids
21 generously donated part of the
proceeds for the ticket sales to the
Foundation. Budding young models
wowed the crowd as they strut in
designer fashion from Dior, Armani and
Burberry’s on the runway hosted at Four
Seasons Hotel. Children entertainers,
balloon sculptors and bouncy castles,
kept the children entertained. We are
very grateful to Kids21 for giving us the
opportunity to partner with them for
this event.
20,000 specially commissioned Make-A-
Wish® Book-Lights were up for grabs for
2006 ‘Stories of Light’ campaign. The Booklights
were a symbol of Make-A-Wish mission
of lighting up the lives and bringing hope to
the children living with life-threatening
illnesses and their families.
Nokia Starlight Cinema launched
the campaign during the ‘Starlight
Kids’ movie screening on Sunday 1
Oct. Wish Children, their families
and the public were invited for an
evening of fun at the Padang.
Times the Bookshop, Courts and Sa Sa
cosmetics distributed the book-lights at
their various stores to increase awareness
and to lend a hand with the sales of the booklights.
Donors gave a minimum of $4 and were
able to take the Book-Light home.
The campaign concluded with a big bang at Courts Megastore,
Washing for Wishes
On the 8th of July with
the generous support
from ExxonMobil Asia
Pacific Pte Ltd, we held
our first car wash event
‘Washing for Wishes’.
Over 50 students from
St Andrews Junior
College, police officers
from the Ang Mo Kio
Police Division and
NOKIA employees
came together to wash.
Motorists were updated on the event thanks to live reports and interviews
broadcasted on Mediacorp’s 938
Live. After a day of scrubbing,
soaping and rinsing – a lot of
hands were wrinkled, but it was
all for a wonderful boy. $4000
was raised that day, which paid
for Choon How’s very special
wish of a Tempur Mattress
with mechanical Bed Frame.
It is with the combined effect
of community partnerships,
individual and corporate sponsors
and dedicated volunteers that
make events such as Washing
for Wishes’ truly successful.
to come dressed in their PJs for a
magical night of storytelling, fun
and entertainment. Gurmit Singh
made a special appearance and
took the PJ party to the next
level of fun.
With the help from our
Main Sponsor Soxal and
many other generous
sponsors, the “Stories
of Light” Campaign
was a huge success and
raised $37,000 which will
go towards making more
wishes come true.
4 th Annual Charity Golf Tournament
175 avid golfers teed off at Laguna National
Gold and Country Club. The tournament got
off to a flying start, as the golfers lined up
in their ‘Wish Mobiles’ festooned with bright
blue flags, before setting off eagerly to their
respective courses.
The party atmosphere on the golf course
continued on even after the golf clubs had
been packed away. The golfers streamed
into the Eagle Ballroom to enjoy Morton’s
martinis.
Mrs Yu-Foo, Minister of State, Ministry of
Community Development, Youth & Sports,
graced the event as our Guest-of-Honour
and assisted in the prize presentation. The
competitive spirit continued through the
auction as guests rallied to raise as much
funds as possible for the Foundation. Their
efforts were well received with the proceeds
from the event totalling a spectacular
$114,000.
We are grateful to Morgan Stanley, for being
our main sponsor for the fourth consecutive
year, and we are also grateful to MasterCard
as this year’s Gold Sponsor and a multitude of
many generous supporters and contributors
to the golf tournament.
Wish Family Christmas Party
The annual Make-A-Wish Christmas party was held at
RJC with over 400 guests transported to a magical day
of fun & games. The Singapore Police Force rallied over
30 volunteers who rose to every challenge put before
them. Our friends at Nokia and JP Morgan also came
to lend a hand. The school hall in RJC was decorated
with Santa’s grotto (complete with sleigh) games
stalls, colourful high stage, arch balloon decorations
and carnival activities. The children were treated to a
musical performance from the Singapore Police Force
Brass Band Quintet, an exciting dance recital from RJC’s
Chinese Dance Group and Denise Bertrand wowing the
crowd with a fabulous story session.
The party came to a crescendo when Santa arrived
and distributed presents donated by members of the
British Club and movie tickets donated by SAP. It was a
spectacular afternoon and we are grateful to everyone
for their generosity and for bringing immeasurable
happiness to the Wish Children and their families.
Volunteers our Superheroes
Volunteers are the backbone of our Foundation. They project hope, goodness and
incredible service. They put their heart & soul into each wish, making sure that
every wish experience will be magical and special for the Wish Child. Our wishes are
greatly enhanced by the cross-cultural experiences of our volunteers and their varied
professional background. Many of them also give of their time and effort in supporting
the Foundation in our fundraising and awareness building events.
As part of our outreach program to
schools, several student groups have
supported us with fundraising activities.
85 new volunteers were trained in 2006
which is 19% more than the previous
year and more than 50% of them went
on to be trained as wish granters. The
total number of volunteers registered
with the Foundation as at 31 December
was 195.
We celebrated our 1st volunteer
appreciation night on 8 December,
commemorating 4 years of magical wish
granting with over 170 wishes. This was
a remarkable evening for the volunteers
to reminisce the journey we have been
on. Our goal is to encourage long-term
volunteerism among people of all ages,
ethnicities and walks of life.
DIRECTORS’ RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
The Company’s directors are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these fi nancial statements
preparation and fair presentation of fi nancial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud
or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in
the circumstances.
AUDITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these fi nancial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the fi nancial
considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the fi nancial statements in order to
design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on
the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies
used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by directors, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of
the fi nancial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is suffi cient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit
opinion.
In our opinion,
(a)
(b)
Accounting estimates
The preparation of fi nancial statements in conformity with FRS requires management’s best ability and
Company makes concerning the future.
Furniture & fi ttings
Offi ce equipment
5 years
5 years
The carrying amount is reviewed annually to assess whether it needs to be written down to its recoverable
amount. Fully depreciated assets are retained in the accounts until they are no longer in use. The useful
lives and depreciation method are reviewed annually to ensure that these are consistent with the pattern of
economic benefi ts provided by the assets.
(d)
Impairment of assets
asset is impaired. Whenever there is an indication that an asset is impaired, as adjudged or estimated by the
management based on currently available information, the difference between the carrying amount and the
estimated recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure account.
