Second Sunday
In Advent
St. Stephen Parish
is a Catholic community of faith striving to
witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and
Confirmation calls us to bring Christ’s Love
to our families, our work places and our
community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we
seek to nurture those gifts and to give back
to the Lord by sharing our time, talent and
material treasure. In all of our parish
activities we seek to develop a personal
relationship with the Lord who directs our
lives and a vision that sees the world with
the eyes of Christ and that leads to a
commitment to justice. We seek a sense of
unity in Christ that leads us to be an open
and welcoming people and a sense of joy in
being graced by the gifts of God’s Love.
DECEMBER 4, 2011 ~ SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT
F ROM OUR PASTOR
Dear People of St. Stephen,
This Sunday’s liturgy focuses on the
Scripture calling us to prepare the way
of the Lord. Isaiah’s proclamation of
comfort and hope and John the Baptist’s
challenge to prepare the Lord’s way call
us to proclaim with enthusiasm the
presence of Christ among us. In the
midst of the hectic activities of these
weeks in preparing for Christmas, we
all need to make sure that we give time
to the Lord, in prayer and in worship,
as we seek to live the first of Jesus’ two
great commandments – love God above
all things – and that we embrace the
spirit of generosity so much a part of
this season a way to love our neighbor
as ourselves. Let’s pray for each other,
that we may all keep Jesus at the center
of celebrating Christmas.
I want to thank Kathy Davis of our
parish, her students from Mother
McAuley, and the families and young
people of our parish who painted the
Advent windows along the entrance
ways to our church. The artistic talents
of Kathy and her students have enabled
us to adapt an Advent custom we
learned from Fr. Claus, a German
priest who stayed with us several years
ago as part of the Crossing Over
program, an exchange program with
several dioceses in Germany. People in
Germany had a custom of painting a
picture expressing an Advent on
Christmas theme in one of the windows
of their home. It’s another way to
remind us to keep Christ at the center
of the season. Thanks to Kathy, her
students, and our parishioners for their
work to help us give focus to this
season.
Thanks to our teen group members –
Emily Binder, Jenny Brennan, Mike
Brennan, Maura Conlin, Corey
Fitzsimmons, Isabella and Victoria
Gutkin, Allison Hallberg, and Jeff
Kamholz – who participated in the
National Catholic Youth conference in
Indianapolis on the weekend before
Thanksgiving. The conference was a
very positive event for young Catholics
from across the country, and we look
forward to our young people sharing
their experiences. Special thanks to
Karen Dillon, our youth minister, and
to Mrs. Linda Brennan who drive and
accompanied our young people for the
conference.
The work on the parking lot has been
completed with the exception of the
seal coating and re-striping that needs
to be done in warmer weather late next
spring. From our initial observations,
the additional drainage work and the
patching are working as planned. We
look forward to much less water and ice
accumulating on the lot. Thanks for
your patience and for your support for
the project.
Finally, thanks to everyone who has
donated to this year’s Annual Catholic
Appeal. We have raised about $250,000
in the Appeal, which will result in over
$500,000 reduction to our parish
mortgage. Donations can be made to
the Appeal through the end of the
calendar year by contacting the parish
office. I am grateful to everyone whose
support has enabled us to take
advantage of this $2 for $1 offer to
lower our mortgage.
May God bless you and your loved
ones,
“JOURNEY TO CHRIST’S LIGHT”
ADVENT SEASON
The word “Advent” (Coming) indicated
how Christians view the four-week period
preceding the Nativity of our Lord. It is a
time of preparation for an ever more
intimate coming of the Lord to you and all
of us.
When I come to visit a friend, I am present
to him. Coming results in presence. Of
course, the Lord is already present to his
people. Therefore, his coming at
Christmas should result in a more intimate
presence. People (friends, lovers) who get
to know and love one another better are
becoming more intimately, more
personally, present to one another. It is a
question of opening up and sharing one
another’s personality. Our preparation for
Christ’s coming should consist in an ever
more opening up to him who wants to
share our human condition in loving care.
ADVENT 2011
By preparing for the Lord’s coming time
and again at Christmas, Christians prepare
for his final coming which will be decisive
for you and all human beings. “Now we
watch for the day hoping that the salvation
promised us will be ours when Christ our
Lord will come again in his glory” (Preface
of Advent).
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School NEWS
CJB Students Share Christmas Spirit—To share the true meaning of Christmas, members of CJB’s
National Junior Honor Society earned money by doing projects at home or in their neighborhood, & that money
was used to purchase Christmas gifts for members of St. Coletta’s residential home located within the
boundaries of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. The recipients of their gifts are non-verbal and/or autistic men with
various mental capacities. “It was a great experience in the true meaning of Christmas to have bought gifts for
people who really appreciate them,” noted Catherine Viz, of Orland Park and president of the school's NJHS.
CJB 5 th Grade Girls Compete in South Suburban Basketball League Championship Game—CJB’s 5 th grade girls’ Red
basketball team finished a stellar season and competed in the championship game in the South Suburban Basketball League at Marist
High School. The Lady Cardinals went undefeated in three rounds of the single elimination playoffs. They ended the season second in
the league of 22 teams, ultimately losing a well-played championship game against Incarnation School of Palos Heights, a team they
were triumphant over in a recent month-long tournament in which CJB took first place. Coach Anthony Faro says, “It is always very
difficult to beat a strong team twice – especially so soon after taking the championship at Incarnation’s annual tournament on their
home court.” Faro along with coaches Liam Murphy and Dennis Houlihan expressed their pride in the team whom they said played
their hearts out the entire season with grace and determination. The team ended the season with an impressive 17-4 record. All of
the girls put points on the board and played well both defensively and offensively. The Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School athletics
program seeks to put Christian values into practice by helping young athletes develop to the best of their abilities and to participate
with dignity and grace.
CJB Students Honored with Mustang Award— On 11/20, sixty-nine young men from the south
side of Chicago & surrounding suburbs were awarded the Mustang Award by St. Rita High School,
including five 8 th grade students from CJB. This award originated in 1983 to recognize outstanding young
men of exceptional caliber with great potential for the future. Award winners are nominated by their
school principal & then must complete an application, essay, letter of recommendation and an interview
with St. Rita faculty and staff. St. Rita recognizes the young men for their pursuit of excellence in
academics, athletics, activities and their commitment to spirituality. This year 159 students were
nominated for the award and 69 young men were named winners of the Mustang Award for 2011-2012.
The 2011-2012 Mustang Award winners from CJB include Colin Brankin, Michael Laird, Zachary Svabek
and John Wolf of Orland Park and Mark Harris of Tinley Park.
CJB 7 th Grade Girls Basketball Team Take Second in the South Suburban Basketball League—CJB’s 7 th grade girls’ Red
basketball team made it to the South Division of the South Suburban Basketball League championship game, played at Marist High
School. The Lady Cardinals competed in a thrilling game against St. Germaine School of Oak Lawn, which resulted in overtime play.
CJB ultimately lost by two baskets with a score of 16-12 and took second place among 16 teams in the South Division. Coach Tom
Doyle of Orland Park comments, “The team had a great season, improving with each game and peaking at just the right time, winning
four games in a row to take second place in league play. The girls’ fighting spirit and unwillingness to give up proved to be the secret
of their success. They were tenacious and performed excellent under pressure. I’m very proud of what they accomplished this
season.”
CJB Chess Team Captures More than the King - Eleven
students from CJB met early on a recent Saturday morning to compete
at the Fall 2011 Scholastic Chess Championship in Orland Park. They
earned a total of five top awards! The competition was tough with
eighty chess players from ten schools. After five intense hours, three
top honors for individual awards went to CJB. In the United States
Chess Federation U600 Division, Jimmy Calcagno (5 th grade) of
Orland Park earned the second place trophy, and Nicholas Plys (5 th grade) of Tinley Park earned the fourth place trophy. In the nonrated
K-8 Division, Matthew Crosse (6 th grade) of Tinley Park earned the fourth place trophy. In addition, CJB earned three team
awards. Winners of the first place team plaque in the USCF U600 Division were Nicholas Plys of Tinley Park and Orland Park
residents Jimmy Calcagno, Stephen Viz, and Peter Viz. Winners of the third place team trophy in the non-rated K-3 Division were
Luke Reiter of Tinley Park, Alex Woracheck, Ryan Reid, Brendan Spratt, and Sammy Fortino of Homer Glen, and Charlie Soltys.
CJB Chess Club is offered to students in Grades K-8 and is instructed by Chess Master Glenn Panner of Frankfort.

Adwent. Droga, pustynia, Dzień Pański
„Przygotujcie drogę Panu...” I oto otwiera się przed nami całe doświadczenie dwóch tysięcy lat
chrześcijaństwa. A zarazem doświadczenie ludu Starego Testamentu.
początek i koniec.
pielgrzymowanie...
Jan Chrzciciel to główna postać Adwentu, czasu wyczekiwania i prostowania dróg, którymi ma przyjść Pan.
„Oto Pan, Bóg, przychodzi z mocą...” – słyszymy dzisiaj u proroka Izajasza. To znaczy, że my mamy
Jan Chrzciciel głoszący pokutę i nawrócenie, odziany w sierść wielbłądzią i pas skórzany,
Stale to odżywa. Te
parafie i te kościoły, które praktykują poranne Msze roratnie, gdzie ludzie z zapalonymi świecami przed
świtem przychodzą do świątyni, wypełniają się. Ileż młodzieży uważa Adwent za najbardziej przybliżający
osobiście do Boga czas w liturgii.
