Information sessions include discussions about
industry news and career opportunities, presentations
on curricula, and a chance to ask questions of faculty
members and staff. No RSVP is required, but please be

CERTIFICATE IN TRANSLATION (ONLINE)
This online program is intended for linguistically skilled individuals of diverse professional
and educational backgrounds who seek to develop abilities in the field of translation.
All programs are offered exclusively online. The certificate can be earned in
one of seven language pairs or in general translation:
Arabic to English Translation
French to English Translation
German to English Translation
Spanish to English Translation
English to French Translation
English to Portuguese Translation
English to Spanish Translation
General Translation
TRANSLATION
Translation is the art and craft of cross-cultural written communication. In this program,
people fluent in two or more languages develop the skills necessary for the rewarding
career of translator. Faculty members are highly accomplished translators from in-house,
freelance, and international organizations. Take any course that meets your needs, or consider

Note: Online registration is not available for certificate courses in translation.
Admissions Test Dates
Admissions exams are offered via e-mail at
no charge. Students must take the exam no
later than September 20. A standard bilingual
dictionary is recommended for the admissions
exam. The test results may not be
appealed, and exams will not be returned
to the applicants. The results are valid for
one year. To sign up to take the test, send
an e-mail to scps.translation@nyu.edu.
Internship Opportunities
Students who have completed five courses
and have maintained an average of B+ or
better are eligible to apply to the department’s
internship program. The department
has established relationships with a variety
of law firms, publishers, media organizations,
translation companies, nonprofit organizations,
and freelance translators who
take our graduates as interns. If your special
interest is not reflected by these organizations,
you are given assistance in setting
up your own internship, with the approval of
the director. Contact (212) 998-7134 and
ask for the translation coordinator for more
information and an application packet.

Internship in Translation

Sec. 1: Dates and hours to be arranged,
Sept. 21–Dec. 23 (0 sessions).
Students who have completed five courses
in translation studies while maintaining an
average of B+ or better are encouraged to
take advantage of internships, which help
them make the transition from student to
translation professional. An internship
consists of approximately 60 hours of practical
work in translation for a banking institution,
law firm, translation company, or
other organization. Internship sites are located
in the New York metropolitan area.

Subtitling for Film and Multimedia
TRAN1-CE9900/$695
M Sec. 1: Thurs. 6.30–8.25 p.m.,
Sept. 22–Dec. 15 (12 sessions).
Benedetta Scardovi-Mounier, freelance
translator, proofreader, transcriber, and
video editor.
This course introduces students to the art
of subtitling films and videos using different
software. Every step of the process is
covered: transcribing a script, translating it,
creating subtitles, and matching them with
the video footage. Open to students in all
language pairs, this course focuses on technical
aspects of subtitling. Basic video editing
skills are helpful but not required.H
CERTIFICATE
REQUIREMENTS
ADMISSION
You must pass an admissions test to obtain
permission to enroll in the prerequisite
introductory course in the language
pair of your choice. For admissions test
dates and information, see this page. Test
results are valid for one year. Students are
formally admitted to the program only
upon successful completion of the introductory
course specific to the language
pair they are studying with a grade of B
or better. Students wishing to register for
a single course without pursuing a certificate
must still pass the admissions test
and receive permission from the director
prior to enrolling. A maximum of two
courses completed by noncertificate students
may be counted retroactively toward
a certificate.
COURSE OF STUDY
Certificates are awarded to students who
successfully complete six courses with an
average grade of B or better. With the
exception of the Certificate in General
Translation, the six courses (one required,
at least four core, and one elective) must
be taken in the language pair of specialization
as outlined below. Students pursuing
the Certificate in General Translation
must take the required course and three
core courses in one language pair and two
core courses in a second language pair,
with prior approval of the director.
Students who have failed to obtain a
passing grade in the introductory course
can retake it only once, after one year.
Only one course toward the Certificate
in Translation can be retaken during
a student’s course of study.
REQUIRED COURSE
Introduction Course
This course, offered in each program and
designed with a view to that particular
language pair, provides a survey of the
reference materials, methods, and techniques
of translation. You are exposed to
a wide range of texts and issues from a
variety of fields so that you can become
acquainted with the kinds of materials
and problems that a translator actually
encounters in professional life. Students
must pass the admissions exam before taking
this course.
CORE COURSES
Commercial Translation I and II
Commercial I concentrates on the analysis
and translation of documents related to
business, banking, finance, and insurance.
Commercial II introduces the student to
more challenging documents and terminological
problems encountered in this
field. Prerequisites: For Commercial I,
Intro duction course; for Commercial II,
Commercial I.
Legal Translation I and II
Legal I provides an introduction to the
demanding task of translating between
the languages of two different legal systems.
The course also addresses legal style,
terminology, and specialized reference
materials. Legal II delves more deeply into
the intricacies of this fascinating subject.

course; for Legal II, Legal I.
Technical Translation
In today’s world, it is impossible to ignore
the importance of science and technology.
These courses address problems specific
to technical translation. Sample texts are
related to engineering, optics, the oil industry,
telecommunications, manufacturing,
and more. Pre requisite: Intro duction
course.
Medical Translation
The medical industry is expanding at a
dramatic rate. Information is exchanged
across international borders, from pharmaceutical
and advanced technologies to
biomedical and genetic research. In these
courses, students master the skill of translating
a wide range of materials from the
areas of medical research, clinical medicine,
and pharmaceuticals. Prerequisite:
Intro duction course.
ELECTIVES
An elective is chosen from among a
group of courses, such as Public Relations,
International Organizations, Translating
the News, Literary Translation, and
Translation Into the Source Language,
which are offered on a rotating basis.
